Creative Thinking about Developing Rural Food Systemsruralxchange

Learn how Trailblazer Foundation supports the development of rural communities in Cambodia through our health, food security, education, and economic development programs: developing ripples of sustainability through community water projects.
THE AUDIO FOR THIS SHOW STARTS ON THE 2nd SLIDE.
This is a presentation by the owners of littleGrasse Foodworks in Canton, NY. It discusses the merits of re-thinking the residential zoning allowances in the town.
In rural Haiti, we work collaboratively and with humility to preserve the dignity of our neighbors. The newsletter describes various dimensions of our learning. Most notably, this past year was the collaborative implementation of solar powered pumps to bring water closer to a mountain community.
The biggest roadblock to the successful realization and deployment of humanitarian technologies is: Not involving at every level the local experts and end-users; not studying and appreciating the locally-available technologies and skills, and not knowing the terrain - the map is not the territory. Our small team was fortunate to have enthusiastic learners, Haitians and visitors, willing to take risks and test out ideas. For our organization, "If Pigs Could Fly -Helping Hillside Haiti," the principal goal is the shared learning. Not to discount the material benefits to the community, it is the learning that will endure.
Long after the PVC has crumbled, the solar panels need repair, and the steel gives way, it will be this shared learning, the experience, the participation in construction, that will endure.
The newsletter summarizes our various efforts to learn and share in Haiti.
This is a new kind of Rotary partnership. It does not involve RI matching grants. It involves local clubs partnering to create solutions and an impact greater than any of them could do individually.

The fifth grade Kids Care Club has developed a personal connection by adopting a school in Haiti: Dumarsais estime de Port au Ceil. Through project Operation Water Well, Sope Creek will be able to bring running water to this school. The water crisis in Haiti was worsened by the recent earthquake and Sope Creek students want to help.
Sope Creek Elementary is partnering with H2O for Life (www.h2oforlifeschools.org) to help make this possible. Every penny raised by our students will be matched by Save the Children and 100% of the money we collect will go directly to digging a well at our adopted school.
The Kids Care Club will be collecting donations on March 3, 4, & 5. Parents can make tax-deductible donations by writing a check directly to H2O for Life Schools, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

#Rolling #Safewater to #Haiti campaign - this 2017 Giving Season
1. #Rolling
#Safewater to #Haiti
The water challenge in Haiti
Hippo Roller: an immediate solution
Our plan and campaign goal
Get rolling this Giving Season 2017
2. #ROLLING #SAFEWATER TO #HAITI
For the past 3
years...
...the island country of
Haiti has battled a
severe drought that was
brought on by El-Nino
and the problem of
water scarcity was only
worsened by Hurricane
Matthew in 2016
making access to safe
drinking water
extremely difficult.
Although a lot of
work...
...is being done to rectify
the damage done to its
fragile infrastructure, it
proves to be a slow and
costly process to re-
establish Haiti's basic
needs such as food
provision, water access,
education and
sanitation.
The Hippo Roller
with...
...an attached water filter is
a highly effective solution
to one of the most critical
problems faced by the
people of Haiti. It allows
people access to safe water
supplies, moving of more
water in less time and
ultimately freedom to
rebuild their lives.
3. The
water
challenge
1. Women and children
spend their days
searching for water,
much of which is
contaminated making
the risk of water borne
diseases extremely high.
4. The
water
challenge
2. The little water that
can be found must be
carried long distances in
heavy buckets leaving
little or no time for
educational and
economical activities.
5. The
water
challenge
3. Many organizations
have stepped in to
address the issue. Wells
are being dug and
filtration systems are
being set in place at key
points but long
distances and rough
terrain still make water
access difficult.
6. AN IMMEDIATE
SOLUTION
1. Hippo Roller is an
immediate solution to
water access allowing 5
x more water to be
carried, it also provides
long-term health and
social benefits.
7. AN
IMMEDIATE
SOLUTION
2. The ease of access to
safe drinking water reduces
the risk of water-borne
diseases, mortality rate
among children, as well as
long term back and neck
injury. It also promotes
hygiene and healthier
living conditions.
8. AN
IMMEDIATE
SOLUTION
3. The time and effort saved
in being able to access safe
drinking water quickly and
efficiently provides the
people of Haiti more time
for education, economical
activities, food production
and family which are all key
to rebuilding a community.
9. OUR PLAN 1
We are excited to be working with strong local
partners in Haiti, namely WATER THE WORLD and
ORPHAN GRAIN TRAIN.
They have good long-term relationships with
stakeholders in Haiti and are committed to
helping those who struggle with clean water
access.
With their help the Hippo Rollers will be
transported and distributed to the CITE SOLEIL
community, one of the poorest areas
in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.
10. The 200 Hippo Rollers will be manufactured in
Johannesburg, South Africa and will then be
packed in a 20 foot container and shipped to
Nebraska, USA.
From there, Orphan Grain Train will transport
the Hippo Rollers overland to Haiti, while Water
the World will arrange the supply and delivery
of Sawyer Filters.
Help for Haiti will be responsible for last
mile distribution. Their task will be to
identify suitable recipients of the Hippo
Rollers, ensure community ownership and
provide feedback.
OUR PLAN 2
11. OUR GOAL
Our target goal for this
campaign is $40,000 and
already we have raised
$16,100 thanks to our
generous community of
supporters.
We are off to a great start
but to
successfully complete this
pilot project and
send 200 Hippo Rollers
complete with filters to
Haiti we still need to raise
60% more.
