2. Kanye West claimed on America’s Independence Day (4th July) that he was going to be
running for President in the 2020 Presidential election later this year, although there is
much room to speculate that he probably won’t, such as him already announcing
previously that he would run for President, but ending up not actually doing it.
Other reasons also include that he has announced very late into the campaign season to
run, meaning he has missed a number of deadlines to register as an independent in
several states and although the majority of states are still open for Independent
candidates, many more deadlines are fast approaching, giving Kanye West little time to
get the required signatures in each of the available states. He has also yet to register a
run with the National Electoral Commission, the federal independent body that handles
and oversees elections in the United States.
States he is too late to run in are Indiana, Maine, New Mexico, New York, North
Carolina and Texas and as such he won’t be able to make any impact on those races,
particularly North Carolina and Texas which are shaping up to be close races, if he does
run, unless he can somehow influence a mass write-in campaign. But let’s consider for a
moment that he does actually run and he manages to somehow get on all the remaining
state ballots in time, would it make an impact?
Well for one he clearly has a massive fanbase and a wide influential social media
network to communicate with his fans and followers and as well as that the media will
be writing and publishing a lot of articles about it and many people will obviously be
talking about it in social circles and across the media and internet, it will come to wide-
spread attention, Kanye West won’t be any normal independent candidate who receives
limited exposure, Kanye’s exposure would be, and is in all sense already, huge.
His racial background and connection with the young may also upset Biden’s delicate
hold on such groups as we move towards the election, such groups that Biden really
needs to build upon to have a good shot at winning the presidency, upsetting this
balance, even by a bit, could be disastrous in numerous close states for the Biden team.
As of now Biden continues to do exceptionally well in the polls against Trump, although
it remains too early yet to be confident that he has it in the bag, but if Kanye does run it
will be very interesting to see how polling will conduct this affair and how their results
would come out differently.
It is without doubt that a Kanye run would benefit Trump much more than it would
Biden. Biden could potentially try and play on Kanye’s seemingly strong support and
friendship of Donald Trump and may even try and call it collusion between Trump and
Kanye to try and prevent his supporters from going over to Kanye, the enlistment of
help from Barack Obama would probably also be used a lot more by Biden if Kanye
actually does run, to try and keep his delicate minority base from fracturing.

3. It may seem stupid to think that a candidate such as Kanye could lead to an upset, but
one must understand that voter apathy is often very high and many people are still fairly
dissatisfied with both Trump and Biden overall. Many may be fed up enough just to
throw their vote away to someone like Kanye, seeing it as a protest at who is running,
while others will vote for him in a sense that they are supporting minorities, especially
in the current climate, why vote for two old white men when there is a well-known
minority candidate? It would seem more in character of the current movements that are
happening.
And even if many don’t vote for Kanye if he did run, as I said previously, even the
smallest disruption in the closest states could lead to a big upset, lesser known 3rd party
and independent candidates have proven this before, especially in 2016. Democrats will
be observing this current news with quiet worry, at least until the deadlines pass
without Kanye having actually ran.
And so, the conclusion is that although Kanye West would not win himself, considering
he has missed some big deadlines (which even if he didn’t he likely still would not win)
but he could very well throw a spanner into the works for Joe Biden.
