Jules Veerne Research Paper
Jules Verne s Life
Jules Verne was born on February 8th, 1828, in Nantes, France. A busy naval port city. There,
Verne watched ships leaving and arriving which had sparked his thoughts for travel and adventure.
While he attended boarding school, he started to write short stories and poetry. After that, his father
sent Jules to Paris to study law. While he studied, Jules Vernehad fallen in love with writing poetry
and going to plays. He began to visit Paris and made a few friends that were artists and writers that
included Alexandre Dumas.
( Jules Verne 2017) After getting his law degree in 1849. Jules stayed in Paris to let his creativity
grow. The following year, his one act play Broken Straws was performed. Jules continued to write

One of the books I have read and re read with unfailing pleasure and interest is Jules Verne s This
edition was published in 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio, and has beautiful illustrations of sea creatures
and seascapes, and of the brave adventurers who travel with Captain Nemo in his spacious
submarine, the Nautilus. As a child, I liked the pictures of the narwhale and the kelp forest best,
but now I also admire the narrator and his manservant Conseil, portrayed in handsome nakedness.
Illustrated books were a rarity in that post war period, and all the more to be cherished. I loved
the underwater world, and would have been a marine biologist if I d had any scientific
encouragement at school. The flying fish and sharks and giant squid of Verne s novel entranced me.
I was in love with Captain Nemo, the brooding cultured misanthrope of the deeps, who combined
the romantic qualities of Heathcliff and Byron with the ruthlessness of

A Comparison Of Hills Like White Elephants And Happy Endings
Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway and Happy Endings by Margaret Atwood share a
gender oriented theme. They both show women struggling to attain equality against their male
partners. This theme is depicted through the use of symbolism, point of view and plot conflict.
Symbolically, Hills like White Elephants represents a choice. It is a life choice that can t be undone
once it is made. This choice is about whether or not Jig, the female character of the story, should
get an abortion. It supports the theme because if Jig chooses to keep the baby she is defying the
wishes of her male partner, who is simply referred to as the man, and taking a stand for women
by doing so. However it is not entirely clear what choice she makes at the end of the story. Her
only words being, I feel fine...There s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine (216). The interpretation
some people take for this is that she decided to keep the baby and chose to defy male domination.
In Happy Endings the main symbols are how the relationships end be it cheating, age, or health
complications. Cheating is symbolic of the relationship being dominated by only one person
involved in it. Age is symbolic of both partners sharing or being equal in the relationship. Lastly
health complications are a way of saying that fate, be it good or bad, can be involved, or that not
everything works out according to plan. These are all related to the idea that by placing a dominant
person in the relationship

Public Health Intervention
How would life look like without public health education and intervention? Without public health in
any given society would lead to a disastrous impact on human health by causing a huge number of

public concerned government as well people at an individual level. Public health has been a core
pillar and a champion stake holder for promoting health education in the United States and the entire

How Can Plot Machines Uplift A Nation
Can Slot Machines Uplift a Nation? When the subject of Native Americans or Indian reservations
is brought up most people bring casino gambling to mind. Approximately five hundred and sixty
tribes are recognized by the federal government, and only about one third conduct casino style

the tribes Ace in the hole that has allowed many reservations to prosper through the operation of

From an moral standpoint the IGRA was created to keep in check the ethics of gambling in
casinos but we find that the IGRA does not create the greatest amount of utility for tribes, but
restricts their rights and gives an unfair advantage to state government. The IGRA is unethical in
regards to tribes operating casinos on reservations. Since the settlement of America, Native
Americans have received the short end of the stick. Settlers continuously encroached upon Native
American land, completely disregarding the fact the Indians were there first. After years of
displacing the Indians and fighting with them, the government allotted reservations for the Indians
to call their own. Now that tribes have been finally given a chance at economic development,
many reservations have taken advantage of casinos to provide a better life for tribal members.
Moral issues have been brought up, from government to non Native Americans. Even tribal
members argue the moral issues. People who are fighting this are fighting it for a variety of
reasons. It s just how it would change the whole community, the flavor. Having a 24 7 bright lights,
honky tonk feel, it s just not what people want. Says Susie Dewberry, a Suislaw tribal member.
(Pittenger) One of the great benefits the casinos have created is employment for many Native

Nutritional Symbiotic Relationship between Dogs and Ticks...
Nutritional Symbiotic Relationship between Dogs and Ticks
A nutritional symbiotic relationship is when two or more species have an interaction with another
that is beneficial to the animal. There are different types of a symbiotic relationship, these include
Parasitism, when one organism is benefited from a host animal who is harmed through the
interaction, Commensalism, when one animal benefits and the other is not affected and stays
neutral, and Mutualism, when both animals are benefited from interaction. Although there are three
different types of relationships, some of them may occur in different places within or outside the
body. Endosymbiosis occurs when a species has a symbiotic relationship within the host s body,
such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although some symbiotic relationships are parasitic many are mutualistic, meaning that both
animals involved in the relationship are benefited. An example of a mutualistic symbiotic
relationship is between a cleaner fish and a moray eel. A cleaner fish usually tends to clean
groupers, pufferfish, but most commonly the moray eel. The cleaner fish will crawl over the
fish, who they are cleaning, and clean there gills, skin, face, and even the throat and mouth,
therefore the cleaner fish has an ectosymbiosis relationship . Many cleaner fish work in groups
with their mates, at a cleaning station type of coral reef. The cleaning fish develop a cleaning
station in order to provide for their young and there mates. This process if beneficial to both
cleaner fish, eel, or any other fish that swim by. The Moray Eel, which is benefited from the
cleaner fish, can range from four feet to thirteen feet and can weigh almost eighty pounds. These
eels live all over the world in freshwater areas, and this is where they encountered the cleaner fish.
Symbiotic relationships, negative, positive, and neutral can be found everywhere around the world.
Although these relationships may have negative effects they all have an important role in the
environment. Each organism has its role, even though it could be parasitic role it has its own role
and place in nature. Mutualistic relationships help animals and organisms provide for themselves

How Did The Bubonic Plague Impact The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire can be brought back all the way to 330 AD. It was created by Constantine I,
he wanted to have Constantinople stand as the new Roman capital. The Byzantine Empire lasted
until 1453. This is increasingly impressive since it suffered through a strand of the Bubonic Plague.
This plague took the name of the Justinian Plague, named after the ruler Justinian the First (527 565
CE) who was in reign during the first outbreak (History). Procopius, the historian of the Byzantine
Empireduring this time, said in his book that nearly 25% of the population had died from the
disease (Ancient History Encyclopedia). The plague impacted the Byzantine Empire, during the 225
years that it was around, economically, and politically. The plague

Global Health Agendas And Domestic Government s Health...

policies. Recipient countries are encouraged to claim ownership for development strategies, and one
way is through Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP). These papers would be published and
submitted to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or World Bankevery few years detailing where
a country has come from and its strategy in the short or medium term to reach poverty reduction
goals.
The PRSP goals for both countries are aligned with the MDGs. However, although Liberia and
Sierra Leone had similar health objectives in their PRSPs, the outcomes for both countries are
different. Internationally, Liberia was heralded as making the greatest progress in its health
status as it had the highest increase of life expectancy in the world (19.7 years) from 1990 to
2012 (WHO 2013). According to Nkwanga (2015), international donors used Liberia s
achievement as proof of success of the aid programs. Sierra Leone on the other hand did not
garner the same achievements with these performance based measures. According to Health
Poverty Action s report (Sharples 2015), Sierra Leone ranks very low on the Human
Development Index at 183 out of 187 countries. It had a high infant mortality rate of 107 deaths
per 1,000 live births and 1165 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births, one of the highest
maternal mortality rates in the world (Sharples 2015 p. 4). However, the turmoil,

Discussion
A pure organic compound melts or freezes fairly sharply over a specific temperature range called its
melting point. This physical constant can help identify a substance. Generally, any impurity added
to a pure substance will lower its observed melting point and increase the range over which melting
occurs. Therefore, when two pure organic substances possess a similar melting point, a mixture
containing both substances will often melt at a lower temperature and over a broader range.
Conversely, if a mixture of a known and unknown substance actually contains a single substance,
the melting point of the mixture will not deviate from the melting point of the known.
Davis (1913) demonstrated that pairs of substances with similar melting points melted at lower
temperatures and over broader melting ranges when mixed. Since the separation and purification of
a compound from food or excretions often leaves toxicologists with very little material to examine,
Davis (1913) recommended the use of melting point and mixed melting point data for

adventure. The Knight s tale is a love story. The two main characters, Arcite and Palamon, are
madly in love with the Princess, Emily. They both love her at first sight, so much so that Arcite

There is Only One Ludwig van Beethoven
What you are, you are by accident of birth; what I am, I am by myself. There are and will be a
thousand princes; there is only one Beethoven Summing up the philosophy of the great composer,
Ludwig van Beethoven, the quote also reflects of the time in which he lived. Beethoven firmly
believed in the dignity of man and that one should live in complete freedom without limits.
Looking into the three parts of his life, early, middle, and end, one will learn about the inner life of
the great composer. During his early life, his musical capabilities shined through. Born in Bonn,
Germany in 1770, his family life started out rough. His father, a court musician, struggled as a
drunkard, leaving his young son to fend for himself. Although caring, Beethovens mother lived frail
and sickly for the whole of her life. Although he began studying music at age 4, his lessons did
not bring him joy. Often late at night, his dad would come home from patronizing local taverns
and force the boy to learn music until dawn. Drinking excessively just seemed a natural part of
his life. As a young child, he often battled depression, which one can understand why by simply
looking at his home life. However, some noticed his skills and employed him as an organist. In
1787, at age 17, he traveled to Vienna and played for the great composer, Mozart who accurately
predicted the future greatness of the young man. While in Italy, Beethoven received a call to return
home to see his mother. Soon after

Alex Salmondbecame the leader of the SNP in 1990 and returned as leader in 2004, leading the
party to take the majority in Parliament following the 2011 Scottish Parliamentelection. This essay
will evaluate the importance Alex Salmond to the rise of the SNP and its effects on Scotlandand

two main left leaders opposed each other in the contest. Salmond won the election by 486 votes
against Ewing s 146 (Deacon R., Sandry A., 2007). The first challenges came at the general

Social Construction Of Gender And Masculinity
Throughout childhood children are exposed to many factors, which may influence their actions and
attitudes regarding the social construction of gender, specifically masculinity and femininity.
Children s attitudes are influenced by a variety of external sources, but are most strongly influenced
by their home life and parents. Parents are responsible for nurturing and teaching children about
multiple aspects in life, including gendernorms; this occurs both consciously and unconsciously.
One way parents pass on their beliefs about gender and gender norms are through the giving of
heteronormative toys. Toys children play with and are exposed to subtly and not so subtly teach
gender norms and mores that are accepted in society; furthermore, the association of color and toy
genre reinforce the social construction of gender and how males are supposed to exhibit masculinity
while females exhibit femininity.
Masculinity and femininity are social constructions based on the biological terms male and female,
respectively. Masculinity is often associated with the terms active, strong, dominant, and not
nurturing; whereas, femininity is often associated with the terms passive, weak, submissive, and
nurturing (Shaw Lee 123, 126, 131). In today s society, due to gender socialization, people generally
believe that men should display masculinity while women should display femininity; this social
belief is learned and initially taught to young children through heteronormative toys.

Hypocritical Of Honesty In The Pardoner s Tale
While some may view the pardoner in The Pardoner s Tale as hypocritical, he is actually very
honest. The Pardoner does not sugar coat anything; he always tells it how it is. He tells
everyone from the start that he gets his wealth from greed. If the Pardoner was hypocritical he
would have never told the travelers that he is greedy. He would have tried to make it seem as
though he were righteous and has never fallen into avarice. The Pardoner always tells the travelers
what he is thinking. He told them that he wanted to sell them pardons so that he can get money.
He never lies to the travelers about his intentions. The Pardoner tells his story about how avarice
can be someone s downfall, but he shows no shame and even brags

My First Shot
It was almost midnight when he caught up to me. I knew it was time. I picked a spot next to the
large cave I found under the brush. He was coming quickly and I heard the dogs with him. When
he was within range I turned slightly and yelled in pure terror, or thats what he thought. Waiting
for him to shoot I pretended to struggle and and scramble in the brush while he pulled out his
pistol. I knew the way it worked, I had been in his dungeons listening to the gun shots for weeks.
I knew he would shoot my arm first to stop me, then my legs, then one last shot in my heart to
kill me. I waited for the first shot. It grazed my arm but that wasn t good enough, I yelled as if it

Stratospheric Ozone Depletion and Its Effect on Skin...
Introduction
This term paper is situated in an area of specific health related and environmental concern: the
human dimensions of global change. For about a decade now there has been growing scientific
interest in the global environmental changes resulting from anthropogenic activity. However most
of this research has focused on the scientific bases of environmental transformations with little
attention to how human social responses are linked to global change. As a result, scientists and
researchers alike are beginning to ask questions about the symbiotic relationship between human
well being and physical change.
Abstract

In general, the incidence of non melanoma and malignant melanoma skin cancer has increased
significantly over the past few decades, particularly in the United States, Canada, Australia, the
United Kingdom, and Scandinavian countries. This large outbreak has intrigued researchers into
examining the relationship of the growing risk of skin cancer to increases in ground level UV B
radiation due to ozone depletion.
According to the latest Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion issued by the United Nations and
the US Government, human influenced ozone depletion may peak around 1998
and will persist well into the 21st century. For the US and other mid latitude countries of the
Northern Hemisphere, ozone losses during summer and fall months may peak at 6 7% relative to
ozone concentrations in the 1960s. Winter/spring depletion could peak at nearly twice those levels.
Vienna Convention and Skin Cancer Incidence
The 1985 Vienna Convention built a baseline for international restrictions on the production of
ozone depleting substances. To evaluate the consequences of these restrictions the convention and
its associates projected skin cancer incidence under three scenarios: 1) no restrictions (the Business
as Usual curve); (2) reduced production of five ozone depleting chemicals by 50 percent by 1999

Enlightenment Philosophers Dbq Essay
The Enlightenment Philosophers: What Was Their Main Ideas? Big ideas are the start of big
changes. In the 17th and the 18th century in Western Europe, well educated philosophers or
philisophes came up with ideas to change society and base things off of individual freedom and
individual decisions. Philosophers used natural laws and observation to form their ideas and to
change society. The philosophers believed that great individual freedom would improve society.
This was true in the aspects of political, economic, and gender equality freedom.
John Locke argued that people should have the right as an individual to create a good government.
Men are naturally in, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose [manage] of their

Analysis Of Bloody Sunday In Selma
Bloody Sunday In Selma What does March 7th mean to you? On this significant day, hundreds
descended to Selma, Alabama in a bid to secure voting rights for African Americans. These
African Americans only ever asked for the simple right to vote and to be treated with equality
compared to whites, but all they ever got in return, was disrespect. Blacks wanted to be treated
like citizens, similar to anyone else with the opposite skin color. Because of this, in 1965, blacks
who were not guaranteed voting rights marched and tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge to
stand up and even demand for what they believed in. Although their efforts were great, local and
state police stopped them before their march got too far. A few attempts later, the demonstrators
made their way across the bridge. Blacks had to stop marching after 10 miles each day because
they had 54 miles to go to complete their walk. This march for equal rights was such a huge issue
that there was a total of 600 participants when they finally completed the walk! In fact, this didn t
just affect a few people, it affected any black woman, man, or even children too. For example,
eleven year old Desiree Robertson carried an American Flag helping lead the group of marches
down a rolling stretch of a highway. These people walked for their freedom and never gave up for
what they believed in. Now you may think that this march was just some walk blacks took to be
noticed, but walking in this march, asked a lot from African

Exploration Of Good And Evil In Rashomon
On one level Rashomon, by director Akira Kurosawa, is a classic whodunnit, a tale of rape,
murder, deceit and redemption. How was the samurai warrior killed and his wife violated in lonely
woodlands at a time of dissonance in medieval Japan? Suspects emerge and an inquisition is held.
But why do all players profess their guilt, rather than protest their innocence? Kurosawa has taken
two stories (the 1950 filmis loosely based on the works of writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa) and
created a multifaceted masterpiece peppered with shifts and contrasts. He delves into aggression
and accountability to explore the collective Japanese consciousness after World War Two. He
considers the meaning of truth and the judging of others. In doing so, Kurosawa... Show more

Kurosawa unsettles at the outset with rain and gloom, then employs a series of rapid cuts to draw
his viewer into the heart of the moral dilemma. His is a radical experimentation with narrative
marked by dislocation and incompleteness (Goodwin, page 114). Kurosawa himself wrote: These
strange impulses of the human heart would be exposed through the use of an elaborately fashioned
play of light and dark (Akira Kurosawa, Something Like an Autobiography, p 182). It would be a
keynote for the entire film (Akira Kurosawa, Interviews, edited by Bert Cardullo, p. 176). That
keynote is struck as the woodcutter recalls the crime. Flashbacks were an unconventional way of
constructing a storyline, and Kurosawa s create a complex intertextual relationship. The woodcutter
strides into thicket, through full light, dappled light and shade, in an evolving montage of surety,
uncertainty and disquiet. The scene plays with long shots, pans, close ups and takes in high angles
and laterals. The segment is still analysed today for its technical and visual brilliance (Martinez, p
31). The shooting script for Rashomon was littered with directions to create a sense of motion, to
pan, to dolly in and out, notes cinema expert Donald Richie (The Films of Akira Kurosawa,
Donald Richie, pages 77, 78). It is here that Kurosawa and cameraman Kazuo Miyagawa break one
of cinematography s taboos shooting directly into the sun. With craft

Fundamental Analysis of Pharmaceutical Stocks
Fundamental Analysis
Fundamental analysis is a technique that attempts to determine a security s value by focusing on
underlying factors that affect a company s actual business and its future prospects. On a broader
scope, you can perform fundamental analysis on industries or the economy as a whole. The term
simply refers to the analysis of the economic well being of a financial entity as opposed to only its
price movements.
Fundamental analysis serves to answer questions, such as:

Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid Tale Essay
It is necessary for the government to impose a certain amount of power and control of its citizens
in order for a society to function properly. However, too much power and control in a society
eliminates the freedom of the residents, forbidding them to live an ordinary life. In the dystopian
futuristic novel, The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwooddemonstrates the theme of power and
control through an oppressive society called the Republic of Gilead. The government established
power and control through the use of the wall, military control, the salvaging, the particicution, and
gender.
The dead bodies of those who have committed acts against the government hang on a structure
called the Wall. The Wall is a method to implement fear on the citizens. Offred describes the
purpose of the wall when she states, We stop, together as of on signal and stand to loook at the
bodies. It doesn t matter if we look. Were supposed to look: this is what they are there for,
hanging on the wall. Sometimes they ll be there for days, until there s a new batch, so as many
people as possible will have a chance to see them (Atwood 40). The wall is a symbol of sin and it
creates fear and force in the Republic of Gilead. It is a warning to the citizens of the punishment for
disobeying the rules. The people that hang on the Wall have committed atrocities and must be made
into examples, for the rest (Atwood 42). Therefore, when the citizens see the punishment for
violating the government s rules, they

Batman And Byronic Hero
The Byronic hero is immortalized as the bridge between epic hero and an anti hero, in between
with the romantic and tragic hero as well. The main key elements that are present in many Byronic
heroes is their sense of darkness and social exile, the struggle for acceptance not only from
themselves but also from society, and finally internal traumas that were caused from past events.
One of the modern characters that immortalizes the Byronic herois DC Comics, Batman. From the

In addition to this, another downfall is the loss of childhood sweetheart, Rachel Dawes by Two
Face. She was the only one outside Bruce Wayne s inner circle that knew who he truly was, and
how he felt about his way and life. As a result of her death, not only does he want revenge on
Two Face, but he tries to compensate for the void that was created by her loss. He does this by
starting many failed relationships that turned sour such as those with Poison Ivy and
Catwoman, to name a few. These are illustrative of the pessimistic demeanor that Batman has
towards the outside because of what he has seen firsthand, and how he reacted to it. Lastly,
Bruce Wayne uses his massive wealth and intelligence to build gadgets, utilities, and tools all in
an effort to stop villains most of whom are not mortal. We have to realize that Batman is still a
mortal man, and can be killed if due so. Therefore, not only does he have the intelligence to build
whatever to defeat his foes, but he also has the cunningness to defeat them as well. This is
evident in the Batman television series from 1966 to 1969, with Adam West. Moreover, many of
these works that he creates has also caused him lots of pain and trouble that he self situated

Management (v/s) Leadership:
In one of the articles Kent (2005, p1012) succinctly sums up the most commonly made distinctions
between management and leadership with clear echoes of Drucker when he states: Managers do the
things right; leaders do the right things; managing is an authority relationship; leading is an
influence relationship; and managing creates stability; leading creates change .
US President Truman famously had a motto on his desk during his period of office, which starkly
outlined what makes the difference between a leader and manager: The buck stops here .
Clegg et al (2005) expound in their work the interesting view that management, or rather good or
successful management, should not be noticed. They consider that the clearest sign that a
manager is doing an excellent job managing her team; she takes time off work and no one notices
she s gone (Clegg et al,2005,p 233).It would seem that, whereas leadership is a high visibility, high
profile role, that of a manager should be like the oil which keeps cogs turning, virtually invisible.
The different strategies a Team leader adapts for depends upon the Task Orientation and
Employee Orientation and can be best attributed by this exhibit.

Jack Kerouac s On The Road Essay
Jack Kerouac s On The Road
Jack Kerouac is considered a legend in history as one of America s best and foremost Beat
Generation authors. The term Beat or Beatnic refers to the spontaneous and wandering way of life
for some people during the period of postwar America, that seemed to be induced by jazz and drug
induced visions. On the Road was one such experience of Beatnic lifestyle through the eyes and
heart of Jack Kerouac. It was a time when America was rebuilding after WW I. Describing the
complexity and prosperity of the postwar society was not Karouac s original intent. However, this

Cassady is the cowboy crashing , is a most accurate example of American society s fascination
with the cowboy lifestyle and how it eventually dwindled. Karouac describes these places and
their short adventures, in a very different but detailed manner according to his perspective. Some
lavish and fun, some corrupt and dangerous, but all very interesting. It describes the environment
of several locations throughout the nation during this period of postwar America with great
accuracy. This is a fantastic, documentary type novel that will leave the reader considerably
more informed about what was happening in society during that era along with a better
understanding of why so many people were drawn to the search of a new frontier.Although they
referred to their journeys as spiritual , Karouac had a difficult time convincing his critics of such
a description. Though they rushed back and forth across the country on the slightest whim,
getting their kicks along the way, their real journey was toward self realization and inner
understanding. They seemed to cross most boundaries, legal and moral, but it was only in hopes
of finding a belief on the other side. On the Road could be considered an American classic along
with such books as Mark Twain s Huckleberry Finn , and Scott Fitzgeralds s The Great Gatsby .

The Importance Of Personal Income Tax In Texas
I think personal income tax in Texas should not become adopted; I feel it is an immoral thing

leave them with less money to pay their bills with more responsibilities. The personal income tax
is paid by people with the money they earn, and it sounds like a corrupted way of taking away
their hard earned wages. It may feel as though we pay personal income tax, but it is not included in

The market expansion and growth are strong, even stronger with consideration to related services

Human Right For The People Of Israel And Palestine
Peace is a basic human right for the people of Israel and Palestine. Given the tenuous nature of
amity between Israel and Palestine, this is a difficult subject at best. However, there are women out
there that believe in, and engage in, peacebuilding efforts between these two territories. Women s
participation in the peace building process of these two countries is vital to the construction of an
unbiased, proactive reconciliation to occur. Because women comprise a large percentage of the
population in these countries, their input and nonviolent negotiating practices are extremely
important considering the escalation of violence in the presently unstable situation between these
warring parties. Since women have a tendency to operate from a nonviolent arena, their inclusion
in the peace building efforts are necessary to eliminate the violence that is ripping these two
countries apart. Women are generally viewed as keepers of the domestic domain, thus, they stand
to lose their very foundation if peace cannot be achieved. At a time when the conflict between
these groups has reached an all time high, it is of upmost importance for women to help pave the
way to culminate a peaceful coexistence between these two opposing factions. The imperative need
for a resolution to this age old conflict must find some immediate answers. There are many women
operating at a grassroots level which will hopefully bring about some significant changes that will
be instrumental to creating a

Postmodernism s The Swan As A Metaphor For Love
Postmodernism is a very unique era within American literature. In previous time periods authors
wrote very structured eventful stories that would often relate to the most common themes of the
time, however Postmodernism completely defied this formula. In most cases Postmodern stories
do not have story arcs nor do they have common themes. At most, the Post era can be bound by
very vague similarities. Most of the stories are conveyed through streams of conscious, which is
essentially using an unedited snippet of someone s life to create a story. There are no inner
monologues or poetic speeches, rather they only showcase a small scale continuous sliver of life.
The narration device similarity is cut and dry, however this can not be said for the themes within
Postmodernism. In the vaguest of words, Post era literature can be bound within a common ideal
of expressing the terrible and disappointing aspects of life. One of the most commonly attacked
aspects of life is the sense of love. In most forms of art and media love is portrayed as a glorious
thing so long as it is true. Love can conquer any mountain and defeat any foe, however
Postmodernism portrays love in a very different manner. In The Swan as a Metaphor for Love
love is compared to a swan. On the surface swans are seen as majestic creatures, similar to how
love is seen as a beautiful emotion, but underneath the water swans are revolting creatures covered
in swan shit and pond scum . This idea that a normal life

Reflections On Barron And Kenny
Reflections on Barron Kenny s 1986 article The Moderator Mediator Variable Distinction in Social
Psychological Research: Conceptual, Strategic, and Statistical Considerations
The relationships between independent and dependent variables can be very complex. Moderation
and mediation is one way to make sense of this complexity, but add a level of complexity of their
own. Due to this complexity, psychological researchers can be unclear on the differences of the
terms and use them in an inaccurate and misleading fashion, indicating that a moderation is a
mediation and a mediation is a moderation. The authors make the differences clear through
explaining that a moderator allows for changing direction or strength of relationship, while ... Show

A hypothesis might read that the relationship between self kindness and depression is accounted
for in part by self kindness leading to more resilience which leads to less depression. This
mediation is different than than a recent moderation effect in another study where level of
perceived social support acts as a moderator on the relationship between a participant s level of
perceived stress on the previous day and their pain level on the following day. If a participant
has more social support, the relationship between their previous day level of perceived stress and
current day pain level is reduced compared to if they have less perceived social support. This
seems to be obviously a moderator rather than a mediator because level of perceived social
support is changing the slope of the regression line. The relationship between the independent or
predictor variable and the dependent or outcome variable is stronger or weaker depending on the
level of the mediator. It is also possible for the relationship to change direction depending on the
mediator. This seems to further separate moderator from mediator as level of a mediator would not
change the relationship between the predictor and

Causes Of The Trail Of Tears
This first hand account by John G Burnett, a member of the 2nd Regiment, 2nd Brigade,
Mounted Infantry, written in 1890 as a letter to his children which paints a descriptive picture of
the brutality of the Trail of Tears ( Two Accounts of the Trail of Tears ). The Trail of Tears was a
tragic event, but was unavoidable due to the circumstances of the time. Many factors preceding the
Trail of Tearsare catalysts for the tragic event. Dubbed the Trail of Tears, the United States Army
forced the CherokeeIndians from their home and made them move west of the Mississippi. There
were people who were for the Trail of Tears and those who were not. Some factors which made the
Trail of Tears inevitable was the growing population of America, the attitude of Americans toward
natives, and the president of the time. The American people called for military and political action
against the Indian tribes east of the Mississippi. President Andrew Jacksonanswered the call and on
May 28, 1830 signed the Indian Removal Act ( Trail of Tears Timeline ). Although this act was
only supposed to allow the negotiation of voluntary removal with the tribes, it made it inevitable
for the Indian removal. After Jackson s victory in 1832 all tribe leaders agreed to the act. The
Indian Removal Act was a catalyst for the abolishment of the traditional rights for the Indians. The
Indians had only two options: assimilate and concede to United States law or leave their homeland.
The five tribes most affected

Next to of Course God America I by E.E. Cummings Essay
Next to of Course God America I by E.E. Cummings
e. e. cummings poem, next to of course god america i, is a wonderful example of stylistic
variation in a text. Once again, we see his skill and mastery at manipulating the English language
in order to foreground a thought and turn it into a commentary on society. As with all of cummings
works, there is evidence of a multitude of variances and deviances at work, however, I shall
concentrate on the area of language variance, more specifically, domain.
Language variation and the area of domain, subject matter and function, are the easiest kinds of
variation to see within a text. Subject matter involves the use of lexical fields, that is to say, a
grouping of words, belonging to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, by jingo by gee by gosh by gum gives the impression that this speaker has not put any
thought into the words he speaks.
The last line of the poem shows the speaker drinking a glass of water rapidly. Why did cummings
choose to invert this line? Why does the speaker drink at all? cummings could be mentioning this
detail in an effort to portray just how irrelevant this speech really is. The adverb rapidly occurs in a
most unlikely position in this thought. If we eliminate the need for rhyming water with slaughter,
since the necessary rhyme for this poem might well have been achieved without inverting the
syntax, then cummings must have had some other reason for the inversion of the syntax. Could it
be that by writing a poem, which expresses a theme of inverted or confused philosophy, cummings
inverts his apparently objective commentary on the situation and the words in which he reports his
commentary to produce an ironic tone? This line, then, further serves to point to the inverted
philosophy of this speaker and foregrounds the insincerity and thoughtlessness behind this speech.
In this poem, carefully worked out in sonnet form, cummings pillories a Fourth of July
speechmaker by choosing patriotic and religious clichГ©s common to platform oratory and
compressing fragments of them together in order to demonstrate the meaningless emptiness that
the speakers

  • 2. Jules Veerne Research Paper Jules Verne s Life Jules Verne was born on February 8th, 1828, in Nantes, France. A busy naval port city. There, Verne watched ships leaving and arriving which had sparked his thoughts for travel and adventure. While he attended boarding school, he started to write short stories and poetry. After that, his father sent Jules to Paris to study law. While he studied, Jules Vernehad fallen in love with writing poetry and going to plays. He began to visit Paris and made a few friends that were artists and writers that included Alexandre Dumas. ( Jules Verne 2017) After getting his law degree in 1849. One of the books I have read and re read with unfailing pleasure and interest is Jules Verne s This edition was published in 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio, and has beautiful illustrations of sea creatures and seascapes, and of the brave adventurers who travel with Captain Nemo in his spacious submarine, the Nautilus. As a child, I liked the pictures of the narwhale and the kelp forest best, but now I also admire the narrator and his manservant Conseil, portrayed in handsome nakedness. Illustrated books were a rarity in that post war period, and all the more to be cherished. I loved the underwater world, and would have been a marine biologist if I d had any scientific encouragement at school. The flying fish and sharks and giant squid of Verne s novel entranced me. • 3. A Comparison Of Hills Like White Elephants And Happy Endings Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway and Happy Endings by Margaret Atwood share a gender oriented theme. They both show women struggling to attain equality against their male partners. This theme is depicted through the use of symbolism, point of view and plot conflict. Symbolically, Hills like White Elephants represents a choice. It is a life choice that can t be undone once it is made. This choice is about whether or not Jig, the female character of the story, should get an abortion. It supports the theme because if Jig chooses to keep the baby she is defying the wishes of her male partner, who is simply referred to as the man, and taking a stand for women by doing so. However it is not entirely clear what choice she makes at the end of the story. Her only words being, I feel fine...There s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine (216). The interpretation some people take for this is that she decided to keep the baby and chose to defy male domination. In Happy Endings the main symbols are how the relationships end be it cheating, age, or health complications. Cheating is symbolic of the relationship being dominated by only one person involved in it. Age is symbolic of both partners sharing or being equal in the relationship. Lastly health complications are a way of saying that fate, be it good or bad, can be involved, or that not everything works out according to plan. These are all related to the idea that by placing a dominant person in the relationship ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Settlers continuously encroached upon Native American land, completely disregarding the fact the Indians were there first. An example of a mutualistic symbiotic relationship is between a cleaner fish and a moray eel. A cleaner fish usually tends to clean groupers, pufferfish, but most commonly the moray eel. The cleaner fish will crawl over the fish, who they are cleaning, and clean there gills, skin, face, and even the throat and mouth, therefore the cleaner fish has an ectosymbiosis relationship . Many cleaner fish work in groups with their mates, at a cleaning station type of coral reef. The cleaning fish develop a cleaning station in order to provide for their young and there mates. The Moray Eel, which is benefited from the cleaner fish, can range from four feet to thirteen feet and can weigh almost eighty pounds. These eels live all over the world in freshwater areas, and this is where they encountered the cleaner fish. The PRSP goals for both countries are aligned with the MDGs. However, although Liberia and Sierra Leone had similar health objectives in their PRSPs, the outcomes for both countries are different. Internationally, Liberia was heralded as making the greatest progress in its health status as it had the highest increase of life expectancy in the world (19.7 years) from 1990 to 2012 (WHO 2013). According to Nkwanga (2015), international donors used Liberia s achievement as proof of success of the aid programs. Sierra Leone on the other hand did not garner the same achievements with these performance based measures. This physical constant can help identify a substance. Generally, any impurity added to a pure substance will lower its observed melting point and increase the range over which melting occurs. Therefore, when two pure organic substances possess a similar melting point, a mixture containing both substances will often melt at a lower temperature and over a broader range. Conversely, if a mixture of a known and unknown substance actually contains a single substance, the melting point of the mixture will not deviate from the melting point of the known. Davis (1913) demonstrated that pairs of substances with similar melting points melted at lower temperatures and over broader melting ranges when mixed. Since the separation and purification of a compound from food or excretions often leaves toxicologists with very little material to examine, Davis (1913) recommended the use of melting point and mixed melting point data for ... There are and will be a thousand princes; there is only one Beethoven Summing up the philosophy of the great composer, Ludwig van Beethoven, the quote also reflects of the time in which he lived. Beethoven firmly believed in the dignity of man and that one should live in complete freedom without limits. Looking into the three parts of his life, early, middle, and end, one will learn about the inner life of the great composer. During his early life, his musical capabilities shined through. Born in Bonn, Germany in 1770, his family life started out rough. His father, a court musician, struggled as a drunkard, leaving his young son to fend for himself. Although caring, Beethovens mother lived frail and sickly for the whole of her life. Although he began studying music at age 4, his lessons did not bring him joy. Often late at night, his dad would come home from patronizing local taverns and force the boy to learn music until dawn. Drinking excessively just seemed a natural part of his life. As a young child, he often battled depression, which one can understand why by simply looking at his home life. However, some noticed his skills and employed him as an organist. In 1787, at age 17, he traveled to Vienna and played for the great composer, Mozart who accurately predicted the future greatness of the young man. While in Italy, Beethoven received a call to return home to see his mother. Soon after ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Scottish National Party was formed in 1934 following the merger of the National Party and the Scottish and has had continuous representation at Westminster since the 1967 Winnie Ewing s victory at the 1967 Hamilton by election. When the Scottish Parliament was formed in 1999, the SNP became the second largest party in the Scottish legislature, serving two terms in opposition. Alex Salmondbecame the leader of the SNP in 1990 and returned as leader in 2004, leading the party to take the majority in Parliament following the 2011 Scottish Parliamentelection. This essay will evaluate the importance Alex Salmond to the rise of the SNP and its effects on Scotlandand Britain. Alex Salmond first decided to contest for leadership in 1990, following the resignation of Gordon Wilson. Margaret Ewing was his only opponent at the time and his key alley Jim Silarrs decided to support him, causing a considerable consternation with the SNP left as the two main left leaders opposed each other in the contest. Salmond won the election by 486 votes against Ewing s 146 (Deacon R., Sandry A., 2007). The first challenges came at the general election in 1992, when the SNP had hopes of making an electoral breakthrough. Social Construction Of Gender And Masculinity Throughout childhood children are exposed to many factors, which may influence their actions and attitudes regarding the social construction of gender, specifically masculinity and femininity. Children s attitudes are influenced by a variety of external sources, but are most strongly influenced by their home life and parents. Parents are responsible for nurturing and teaching children about multiple aspects in life, including gendernorms; this occurs both consciously and unconsciously. One way parents pass on their beliefs about gender and gender norms are through the giving of heteronormative toys. Toys children play with and are exposed to subtly and not so subtly teach gender norms and mores that are accepted in society; furthermore, the association of color and toy genre reinforce the social construction of gender and how males are supposed to exhibit masculinity while females exhibit femininity. Masculinity and femininity are social constructions based on the biological terms male and female, respectively. Masculinity is often associated with the terms active, strong, dominant, and not nurturing; whereas, femininity is often associated with the terms passive, weak, submissive, and nurturing (Shaw Lee 123, 126, 131). In today s society, due to gender socialization, people generally believe that men should display masculinity while women should display femininity; this social belief is learned and initially taught to young children through heteronormative toys. ... In the dystopian futuristic novel, The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwooddemonstrates the theme of power and control through an oppressive society called the Republic of Gilead. The government established power and control through the use of the wall, military control, the salvaging, the particicution, and gender. • 42. A Summary On Private Equity Essay Private Equity Weiwei Zhu FleetCor Deal Summary: As a Managing Director at Summit Partners, I have received an investment proposal of FleetCor deal from the deal team To invest 44.9 million in FleetCor for an ownership position of 46%, in the form of convertible preferred stock with an 8% accruing yield. This memo includes all my concerns for this deal. Good Business Framework: Market Position: Strong FleetCor is one of the largest issuers of commercial fleet fuel purchase cards in the US. Targeting the middle market, it s positioned to achieve leading market share, as most competitors focus on upper end market. Also, FleetCor has advantage of local market distribution. Competitors do not have such cost structure or infrastructure to support an entry into the middle market. Thus, compared to current and potential competitors, FleetCor can be a leader in this market segment. Market Growth market share trends: Very Positive The total market size for commercial FleetCards is 2 billion. And according to Bain market sizing studies, the market of FleetCor can be $500 million, big enough for potential IPO. The market expansion and growth are strong, even stronger with consideration to related services such as roadside assistance. Especially the middle market had undervalued penetration. Card penetration in the upper end market is 75%, while only 25% in the middle market, which indicates a huge space for expansion and growth. Thus, FeetCor is very likely to ... • 43. Human Right For The People Of Israel And Palestine Peace is a basic human right for the people of Israel and Palestine. Given the tenuous nature of amity between Israel and Palestine, this is a difficult subject at best. However, there are women out there that believe in, and engage in, peacebuilding efforts between these two territories. Women s participation in the peace building process of these two countries is vital to the construction of an unbiased, proactive reconciliation to occur. Because women comprise a large percentage of the population in these countries, their input and nonviolent negotiating practices are extremely important considering the escalation of violence in the presently unstable situation between these warring parties. Since women have a tendency to operate from a nonviolent arena, their inclusion in the peace building efforts are necessary to eliminate the violence that is ripping these two countries apart. Women are generally viewed as keepers of the domestic domain, thus, they stand to lose their very foundation if peace cannot be achieved. At a time when the conflict between these groups has reached an all time high, it is of upmost importance for women to help pave the way to culminate a peaceful coexistence between these two opposing factions. The imperative need for a resolution to this age old conflict must find some immediate answers. There are many women operating at a grassroots level which will hopefully bring about some significant changes that will be instrumental to creating a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Postmodernism s The Swan As A Metaphor For Love Postmodernism is a very unique era within American literature. In previous time periods authors wrote very structured eventful stories that would often relate to the most common themes of the time, however Postmodernism completely defied this formula. In most cases Postmodern stories do not have story arcs nor do they have common themes. At most, the Post era can be bound by very vague similarities. Most of the stories are conveyed through streams of conscious, which is essentially using an unedited snippet of someone s life to create a story. There are no inner monologues or poetic speeches, rather they only showcase a small scale continuous sliver of life. The narration device similarity is cut and dry, however this can not be said for the themes within Postmodernism. In the vaguest of words, Post era literature can be bound within a common ideal of expressing the terrible and disappointing aspects of life. One of the most commonly attacked aspects of life is the sense of love. In most forms of art and media love is portrayed as a glorious thing so long as it is true. Love can conquer any mountain and defeat any foe, however Postmodernism portrays love in a very different manner. In The Swan as a Metaphor for Love love is compared to a swan. On the surface swans are seen as majestic creatures, similar to how love is seen as a beautiful emotion, but underneath the water swans are revolting creatures covered in swan shit and pond scum . This idea that a normal life ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. Reflections On Barron And Kenny Reflections on Barron Kenny s 1986 article The Moderator Mediator Variable Distinction in Social Psychological Research: Conceptual, Strategic, and Statistical Considerations The relationships between independent and dependent variables can be very complex. Moderation and mediation is one way to make sense of this complexity, but add a level of complexity of their own. Due to this complexity, psychological researchers can be unclear on the differences of the terms and use them in an inaccurate and misleading fashion, indicating that a moderation is a mediation and a mediation is a moderation. The authors make the differences clear through explaining that a moderator allows for changing direction or strength of relationship, while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A hypothesis might read that the relationship between self kindness and depression is accounted for in part by self kindness leading to more resilience which leads to less depression. This mediation is different than than a recent moderation effect in another study where level of perceived social support acts as a moderator on the relationship between a participant s level of perceived stress on the previous day and their pain level on the following day. If a participant has more social support, the relationship between their previous day level of perceived stress and current day pain level is reduced compared to if they have less perceived social support. This seems to be obviously a moderator rather than a mediator because level of perceived social support is changing the slope of the regression line. The relationship between the independent or predictor variable and the dependent or outcome variable is stronger or weaker depending on the level of the mediator. It is also possible for the relationship to change direction depending on the mediator. This seems to further separate moderator from mediator as level of a mediator would not change the relationship between the predictor and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Causes Of The Trail Of Tears This first hand account by John G Burnett, a member of the 2nd Regiment, 2nd Brigade, Mounted Infantry, written in 1890 as a letter to his children which paints a descriptive picture of the brutality of the Trail of Tears ( Two Accounts of the Trail of Tears ). The Trail of Tears was a tragic event, but was unavoidable due to the circumstances of the time. Many factors preceding the Trail of Tearsare catalysts for the tragic event. Dubbed the Trail of Tears, the United States Army forced the CherokeeIndians from their home and made them move west of the Mississippi. There were people who were for the Trail of Tears and those who were not. Some factors which made the Trail of Tears inevitable was the growing population of America, the attitude of Americans toward natives, and the president of the time. The American people called for military and political action against the Indian tribes east of the Mississippi. President Andrew Jacksonanswered the call and on May 28, 1830 signed the Indian Removal Act ( Trail of Tears Timeline ). Although this act was only supposed to allow the negotiation of voluntary removal with the tribes, it made it inevitable for the Indian removal. After Jackson s victory in 1832 all tribe leaders agreed to the act. The Indian Removal Act was a catalyst for the abolishment of the traditional rights for the Indians. The Indians had only two options: assimilate and concede to United States law or leave their homeland. The five tribes most affected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Next to of Course God America I by E.E. Cummings Essay Next to of Course God America I by E.E. Cummings e. e. cummings poem, next to of course god america i, is a wonderful example of stylistic variation in a text. Once again, we see his skill and mastery at manipulating the English language in order to foreground a thought and turn it into a commentary on society. As with all of cummings works, there is evidence of a multitude of variances and deviances at work, however, I shall concentrate on the area of language variance, more specifically, domain. Language variation and the area of domain, subject matter and function, are the easiest kinds of variation to see within a text. Subject matter involves the use of lexical fields, that is to say, a grouping of words, belonging to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, by jingo by gee by gosh by gum gives the impression that this speaker has not put any thought into the words he speaks. The last line of the poem shows the speaker drinking a glass of water rapidly. Why did cummings choose to invert this line? Why does the speaker drink at all? cummings could be mentioning this detail in an effort to portray just how irrelevant this speech really is. The adverb rapidly occurs in a most unlikely position in this thought. If we eliminate the need for rhyming water with slaughter, since the necessary rhyme for this poem might well have been achieved without inverting the syntax, then cummings must have had some other reason for the inversion of the syntax. Could it be that by writing a poem, which expresses a theme of inverted or confused philosophy, cummings inverts his apparently objective commentary on the situation and the words in which he reports his commentary to produce an ironic tone? This line, then, further serves to point to the inverted philosophy of this speaker and foregrounds the insincerity and thoughtlessness behind this speech. In this poem, carefully worked out in sonnet form, cummings pillories a Fourth of July speechmaker by choosing patriotic and religious clichГ©s common to platform oratory and compressing fragments of them together in order to demonstrate the meaningless emptiness that the speakers ...
