Why some of the employees‘ offers are
rejected
Suggestion System may be a source of major competitive
advantages for any business or organization. The system’s
advantages extend over areas such as cost saving, in-
creasing income, waste reduction, quality improvement,
increased safety, providing better customer service
(internal and external), customer satisfaction, and above
all promoting organizational culture.
The system’s major mission is to create an environment
that motivate all employees to gradually and continually
move toward improvement.
How is it possible to persuade more individuals to join our
suggestion system?
Lack of employee involvement is one of the main
concerns of organizations implanting suggestion system. This has al-
ways been a problem mong secretaries and executive leaders of suggestion system hence they are still trying to find
ways to engage people.
Some of the main reasons that result in lack of employee involvement are given in the following.
Lack of creativity and being unable to give suggestion
Having delay in evaluating employees’suggestion and giving them feedback
Having delay in paying mostly unfair rewards
Not giving enough attention to the subject because of so many problems on behalf of employees
Not having opportunity to give suggestion because of heavy work loads
Not having clear organizational objectives
Underestimating employees’suggestions

Unconscious Problem Solving
This method relies on the unconscious mind to be continually
processing the various sensory inputs stored in short-term
and long-term memory. Using your unconscious to solve problems is a process of listening
and a readiness to record ideas as they percolate into your conscious mind. Some of the
greatest thinkers were great relaxers although it doesn’t mean that they were lazy people and
it doesn’t have a negative connotation. Einstein, for instance, was a daydreamer and spent
much of his relaxation time sailing on a lake.
It’s all very well to work hard on a problem under the stressful pressure of deadlines, but
the opposite condition of relaxation and not working on a problem is very valuable. The
important thing is not to try too hard. Go with the flow. Incubate.

Student-Designed SMART Wheel Aims to Make Driving Safer
Driving safely requires that both hands remain firmly on the steering wheel, but some people find the temptation to use their smartphone
at the wheel all too enticing, often resulting in road accidents. To combat this, a group of students has come up with SMART wheel: an
aftermarket steering wheel cover that detects when drivers are engaging in unsafe activities like texting while driving, and provides sonic
and visual alerts to refocus their attention.
Deriving the first part of its name from the acronym “Safe Motorist Alert for Reducing Texting, Tweeting, Typing, Touchscreens, Takeout
and Touch-up,” SMART wheel was designed by students aged between 12 and 18 from Londonderry, New Hampshire. The team is col-
lectively known as “The Inventioneers,” and has been working together since 2004. SMARTwheel is the third invention produced by the
group thus far.
Like the Tiwi, SMARTwheel is primarily focused toward teenage and inexperienced drivers. The device fits onto a standard steering wheel
and sounds an alert while simultaneously flashing red lights if a driver is deemed to be holding the steering wheel in an unsafe manner –
hopefully refocusing their attention as a result. A digital log of when the incident occurs is then produced, and can be later accessed by
parents, employers, or law enforcement.
Gizmag caught up with a few members of the Inventioneers team, and had a chat about the design of the SMART wheel and future plans
for the product. The team explained that the device makes use of embedded sensors to determine when drivers have removed one or
both hands from the wheel for too long, or if the person is texting while driving.
At present, the digital log is accessed via wired connection to a computer, though plans are in the works to offer a version which sends
out the data in real time – perhaps with a Bluetooth tether to a smartphone.
Other plans for SMART wheel include an accessory which fits onto a stick shift, and the team is also looking to expand the technology
into the areas of mass-transit and commercial driving. The Inventioneers members further expressed a desire to work with insurance
companies, who could offset the cost of a professional installation of the SMARTwheel (though DIY installation is also possible).
The Inventioneers recently received an audience with President Obama, who declared his admiration for the project, and the team is cur-
rently planning to manufacture the SMART wheel, with a proposed eventual retail price of US$200.
While a release date is still unconfirmed at this early stage, a late 2013 schedule is hopeful.

Suggestion System
Overview
Suggestion System
On the Line
BritishGasistheUK’sleadingenergysupplier,andservesaround12millionhomesinBritain.
British Gas is considered one of the Big Six and employs more than 30.000 staff. The
company is one of the old and experienced companies grounded on participation and
suggestion system.
Alan Firmin, HR business partner at British Gas, says: “This has made a huge difference.
It makes the whole process much more transparent. Employees can track their ideas from
the point they suggest them right through to evaluation and implementation. It has definitely
increased the number of ideas we receive.”
A recognition scheme is in place to reward employees for their ideas. “Depending on the nature
of the idea an employee will receive a certificate and maybe a small gift such as a pen set. For
bigger ideas, employees may receive their award from the managing director and receive an
invitation to the company’s annual gala,” says Firmin. There is also a commendation award for
good ideas that can’t be taken up.
Over the last few years, more than £2million worth of ideas have been put forward by employees
and, in 2005 alone, the value of employee suggestions was around £800,000. “Many of the
ideas are for internal changes although some will be more visible outside the company,” says
Firmin. For example, one of the employees’ suggestions in British Gas managed to make 4.4
million saving for the company.
Creativity Techniques
(BrainWriting)
There are varieties of Brainwriting techniques developed by Battelle
Institute in Frankfurt, Germany. These techniques include: Brainwriting
pool, Brainwiting 6-3-5, and etc.
Brainwriting 6 – 3 – 5 is a techniques proposed by this institute. The con-
cept derived from the fact that in this technique 6 participant sit in a group,
each participant thinks up 3 ideas every 5 minutes. The ideas are written
down on a worksheet and passed on to the next participant. The participant
reads the ideas and uses them as inspiration for more ideas. Participants are
encouraged to draw on others’ ideas for inspiration, thus stimulating the crea-
tive process. After 6 rounds in 30 minutes the group has thought up a total of
108 ideas.
You can modify the process, assign less time to the beginning and more time to
the cycle ending. The first set of ideas needs around 2 minutes but the following
sets need more time since each participant need to read others’ ideas before
giving his own ideas.
The technique structure is summarized as follows:
1. Identify the problem
2. Six people sit around in a group to write down 3 ideas during certain
time period.
3. Then, they pass around their ideas in group.
4. Each one reads the other’s ideas, and gives comment. They should
write down their ideas at the bottom of the paper.
5. Repeat until ideas are exhausted. No discussion at any stage.
6. Finally, the results are discussed and evaluated.

Imagining what’s Possible with Intel’s
Future Contest
A 2012 global online open innovation contest for innovative
applications of a futuristic sensing technology.
The Intel Future contest sets creative minds off on a journey to imagine personal uses of a new
sensing technology. Without revealing too much about what the technology would be, the semi-
conductor chip corporation tasked participants to come up with a device, platform or service that
would encompass it and could be adopted by as many people as possible. They were asked to think
five years into the future to imagine how a new ground breaking technology could be used and in
which life situations – for example, health and wellness, knowledge, entertainment, and creative
expression.
The open innovation contest was open to all and ideas were submitted to a specially created por-
tal. They were evaluated by a panel of judges who based their decisions on the following criteria:
uniqueness, desirability, expression (has the idea been well thought out), and insight (is it present-
ing a new insight?). The concepts were also voted for by the online community.
Overall, 487 ideas were submitted from more than 350 participants, and more than 60,000 people
visited the website.
The overall winner, who received a check for $5,000 was Frequent Flyer 74 for an idea called ‘MY
LIFE: The Soundtrack’. The proposal enhances what we see and hear as it is able to sense what we
see and hear. Combining this with location-based information, time information and by filtering
out irrelevant noises it presents users with a clean audio presentation of sounds accompanied by
music.
