This work aims to identify orthotropic linear elastic constitutive parameters of Pinus pinaster Ait. wood through the Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU) methodology. The approach is validated using both FE and synthetic image data. In the latter, digital image correlation is carried out on synthetic images deformed according to a 2D FE model. A systematic comparison is carried out. The identifiability for the four orthotropic material parameters on the radial-tangential (RT) plane is discussed regarding robustness and relative errors.

Wood and wood-based products have been gathering relevance across the globe due to policies of sustainability and green economy. Wood can be modelled as a hierarchical material. Despite the mechanical characterization of several major species at the macro and structural scales, information addressing material properties at the mesoscale of the annual growth rings is still very scarce in the literature.

Nowadays, digitalisation and virtualisation are the keys for companies’ success and competitiveness. Thus, numerical simulation tools are essential for engineering analysis and development. The success of a simulated material behaviour prediction depends on the chosen complex constitutive model and the correctness of its parameter identification. These days, it is used several classical mechanical tests to identify the model’s parameters.

Currently, virtual manufacturing and simulation predictions are crucial in the design and development of engineering parts. However, its reliability largely depends on the adopted constitutive model and accuracy of the governing material parameters. A complex and robust phenomenological constitutive model requires the calibration of many parameters. This is a very time-consuming task, particularly when using classical procedures, which involves many homogeneous mechanical experiments and high costs.

Nowadays, the development and design of new mechanical parts are performed using virtual manufacturing tools. For this purpose, numerical simulation software uses complex material constitutive models to reproduce real material behavior. However, the reliability of the simulation’s results is conditioned by the accuracy of the input data. The calibration of material models depends on a proper material characterization, which turns to be expensive due to the required large number of mechanical tests.

Recent Developments in Computational Methods for the Analysis of Ducted Prope...João Baltazar
This paper presents an overview of the recent developments at IST and MARIN in applying computational methods for the hydrodynamic analysis of ducted propellers. The developments focus on the propeller performance prediction in open water conditions using Boundary Element Methods and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solvers. The paper starts with an estimation of the numerical errors involved in both methods. Then, the different viscous mechanisms involved in the ducted propeller flow are discussed and numerical procedures for the potential flow solution proposed. Finally, the numerical predictions are compared with experimental measurements.

Usually, transducers implemented in infrasound sensor (microbarometer) are mainly composed of two associated elements. The first one converts the external pressure variation into a physical linear displacement. The second one converts this motion into an electrical signal. According to this configuration, MB3, MB2000 and MB2005 microbarometers are using an aneroid capsule for the first one, and an electromagnetic transducer (Magnet-coil or LVDT) for the second one.
CEA DAM (designer of MB series) and PROLANN / SEISMO WAVE (manufacturer and seller of MB3) have associated their expertise to design a new optical microbarometer:
We aim at thinking that changing the electromagnetic transducer by an interferometer is an interesting solution in order to increase the dynamic and the resolution of the sensor. Currently, we are exploring this way in order to propose a future optical microbarometer which will enlarge the panel of infrasound sensors.
First, we will present the new transducer principles, taking into account the aneroid capsule and the interferometer using integrated optics technology. More specifically, we will explain the operation of this optical technology, and discuss on its advantages and drawbacks.
Secondly, we will present the optical microbarometer in which the interferometer is positioned inside the aneroid capsule under vacuum. The adjustment of the interferometer position is a challenge we solved with a simple solution. The optical measurement is naturally protected from environmental disturbances. Four prototypes were manufactured in order to compare their performances, and also an optical digitizer specifically designed to record the four channels interferometer.
Finally, we will present the results we obtained with this sensor (sensitivity, self-noise, effect of environmental disturbance, etc) compared to those of a MB3 microbarometer, and discuss about the advantages of this new sensor.
Optimal Quality and Efficiency in Adaptive Live Streaming with JND-Aware Low ...Vignesh V Menon
Abstract: In HTTP adaptive live streaming applications, video segments are encoded at a fixed set of bitrate-resolution pairs known as bitrate ladder. Live encoders use the fastest available encoding configuration, referred to as preset, to ensure the minimum possible latency in video encoding. However, an optimized preset and optimized
number of CPU threads for each encoding instance may result in
(i) increased quality and (ii) efficient CPU utilization while encoding. For low latency live encoders, the encoding speed is expected to be more than or equal to the video framerate. To this light, this paper introduces a Just Noticeable Difference (JND)-Aware Low latency
Encoding Scheme (JALE), which uses random forest-based models to jointly determine the optimized encoder preset and thread count for each representation, based on video complexity features, the target encoding speed, the total number of available CPU threads, and the target encoder. Experimental results show that, on average, JALE yield a quality improvement of 1.32 dB PSNR and 5.38 VMAF points with the same bitrate, compared to the fastest preset encoding of the HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) bitrate ladder using x265 HEVC open-source encoder with eight CPU threads used for each
representation. These enhancements are achieved while maintaining the desired encoding speed. Furthermore, on average, JALE results in an overall storage reduction of 72.70 %, a reduction in the total number of CPU threads used by 63.83 %, and a 37.87 % reduction in the overall encoding time, considering a JND of six VMAF points.

5 Conclusions and future work
22
▪ In future work: a) Using heterogeneous experimental tests.
b) identification of heterogeneous properties of wood.
▪ The proposed identification methodology coupled to synthetic image construction was
successfully validated.
▪ The effect of the DIC parameters set seems to be higher on parameters that are less
sensitive to the experimental configuration used.
▪ Accurate identification of:
1. Three out of four RT linear elastic parameters when using on-axis specimens (ER, ET, νRT).
2. One out of four RT linear elastic when using the off-axis specimens (GRT).
