The document provides ideas for generating a music video concept that portrays a narrative storyline. It discusses using various camera shots, lighting, and mise-en-scene techniques to tell the story of a girl who falls in love but then gets her heart broken. Specifically, it proposes using an establishing long shot of the girl alone in her bedroom looking sad after a breakup. Throughout the video, two-shot mid-range shots would show the interactions between the boy and girl as their relationship progresses. Flashbacks could show happy memories by cutting from the girl crying over a photo. The performance concept would involve the girl singing to the camera with running makeup after crying over the breakup.
1. Idea Generation
When creating a music video, the genre that your song connotations are added into the video to
portray the genre and to attract the audience to watch it. To start with my song is a hybrid of genres.
First of all it is pop, connations of pop genre are the video backs up the song creating a narrative
concept and the melody is memorable. My song which I have chosen does have a catchy memorable
melody and to make it stand out to audience im going to make sure the storyline fits in with the
song. Secondly it also has a country genre. The connation of this is the song has a meaning to it and
it is general outdoors. The song I have chosen does have a meaning to it, therefore I can create a
storyline to complement the song and I have planned to film outdoors as there is going to be a scene
in a park where the couple are happy and enjoying each other company as they will show affection
as they will kiss, cuddle and hold hands with each other.
As there is a story line within the music video, this portrays a narrative concept as we have created a
storyline which will complement the video; there a girl who falls in love with a guy but they break up
and she is heartbroken, which will show through mise en scene, camera angles and editing.
To start the music video there will be an establishing shot to set the scene of what is happening and
what has happened throughout the music video. The shot will be a long shot of a girl in her bedroom
to portraying that she is alone as she has just lost someone who means the world to her. She will be
positioned to the right of the screen within the Guttenberg’s rule of third principle. She will be sat on
the floor which will turn into a mid-shot as a track forward and a pan towards the left will occur to
deepen the tearful atmosphere as we get a closer as we can see in more detail to anger and sadness
which this guy has caused as we get a closer detail of her facial expressions. Throughout this we can
see her posture and how this reflects to the scene as she will look like she is small and weak as
someone has just broke her heart, as she is sad she wouldn’t be jumping for joy. Within the scene
the lighting will be dark to empathise to the emotion which is building within the room. Through this
we consider the atmosphere, emotions, the characters and the mise en scene. To complement this,
there will be a voice over to project one of the characters feeling, her view and outcome of what has
happened, to foreshow a more in depth narrative conception towards the video.
Two shot mid shots will be used the most throughout as the music video is about a boy and girl, so
there will be an consistent of two people who will be interacting so we want to see their body
language and their facial expression of their feeling and how they are reacting to each other actions
and emotions, so they will be placed into the same shot. For example there will be sequences of
scenes where the couple meet in a café and interacting as they are meeting for the first time. The
shot will consist of two people (boy and girl) in the same shot. They will be sat down within the café
and placed within the centre so the audience can see them face on. By placing a mid shot we can see
how they will be feeling; nervous, excited. As well as how they react with each other; shy, protective.
To portray a new beginning the lighting within the scene will be bright as they are starting a new
path for them both which they will travel down.
To show that the girl is weak and upset, high angled shot are effective to show that there is
dominance over her. A good way which we could use this, is if the girl has something which the boy
gave her; a necklace, photograph, teddy. As she is holding the item an eye line match to the item will
be effective as we can see what the girl is looking at, what she is holding and what is making her
2. upset. As she will be missing him a good example to use will be a photograph as this could trigger
memories of them. As she will be looking though all their old photos and items which he has bought
her. This will trigger memories which will cut to after this scene. For example she will be upset in her
bedroom crying over a photograph then a cut to happy memories to when they were together will
continue after this.
Within the music video there will be another concept which performance concept. This is occurs
when the girl will sing in the music video. For example the girl when she breaks up with her
boyfriend will be upset and alone. As she has been crying, she will have makeup running down her
face. She will go to the mirror and start singing, this demonstrates the performance concept.
