AS Applied ICT - June 2015 - Unit 3 -
Truckles scenario
Activity 1
• 1) Male has colourful fantail, colour depends on strain
2) Female unassuming, greyish-brown all
3) All males can breed with all females
4) Breeding cycle starts every 4 weeks.
5) Breeding tank can hold up to 32 fish
6) Best results = 16 males 16 females
7) +4 weeks, females moved to holding tank to give birth
8) +4 weeks, females placed in stock tank (where fish stored)
9) +4 weeks, babies grown and placed in stock tank
10) Fish in Stock tank placed in breeding tank, sold via selling tank, or
stored (excess)
11) Breeding tank, 2 holding tanks, stock tank, selling tank
12) Complete model to predict cash flow.
13) Surplus fish sold to fish place.
14) Fish place define batch size / price.
15) Batches must contain set number of specific male truckle
16) Depending on fashion, some more desirable and therefore valuable
• Factors affecting fish production are:
• Temperature- most fish need a particular range of temperature between which
they can breed. So the heaters need to be adjusted properly during different
seasons to keep the temperature suitable.
• Light Intensity: availability if light affects the reproduction of fishes. So the fish
tank must have an artificial light or sunlight.
• Salinity: If the filters don't work properly then the water would not be clean. As a
result disease is spread to fishes caused by dirty water. A solution to this is that the
water in the tanks could be changed regularly and filters are checked regularly to
make sure that they are working.
• Food: The main aim of a business is to get healthy, fast growing fish which do not
require much food. But fishes must be fed daily which makes them healthy and
they will produce healthy offspring which will eventually lead to profit (keep in
mind that the buying of food will lead to costs)
• Breeding : how do we know which male breeds with which female, to produce
which strain of baby fish. Also, we don’t know once reproduction has started, if we
have certain female truckles in the tank.

Activity 4 (a) Indicative content
• Report/letter/memo etc
• In the correct format, (Limited to Level 2 if not correct.)
• Suitable title
• Introduction including statement of decisions.
• Justifications of recommendation – should mention profit
• Factors that might impact on profitability:
• Chart:
– Relevant
– Used in justification of recommendation
– Labelled
– Chart fit for purpose
• Conclusion is a summary of recommendations.
Activity 5 Evaluation (wasn’t on last
year’s paper!):
• Write an evaluation of the model considering:
- How well you thought it performed.
- What else you would like it to do and why this would
help.
Answers must include:
- Comment on ease of use.
- Statement to the effect that it helped you to your
solution.
- Comment on the accuracy of any data.
Recommendation for improvement with an
explanation with data and source.
