Editor's Notes
So for any of us in the IT space – that’s probably a pretty familiar request / demand…
I remember my parents telling me that quite I bit - nonetheless, I spend quite a bit of time on my Commodore VIC20, Amiga, PC 486, Pentium etc etc
So – with your career – you may spend a fair amount of time asking questions –
Where am I? Am I making progress? Am I achieving the things I want to?
Who do I want to be and what do I need to do to make that happen?
Maybe you want a lot of money so you can buy heaps of things.
Maybe you’re a very social person and enjoy being with a group of friends.
Maybe a flexible working arrangement is important to you so you can spend more time on your hobbies or with your family.
At different points in my career – I know that the importance I placed on all of these things wasn’t always fixed.
Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella
or maybe helping out your local community is more important to you than anything else.
Science degree does not equal scientist
I’ve been in corporate marketing for 15 years and agency / or consultative marketing for the last 3 years.
So – the points I want to make here are –
I remember companies often by where I made lasting friendships
The company where I made the most money wasn’t where I was the happiest and the company wasn’t necessarily that well known (in Australia) – even though it’s the biggest company I’ve worked for
The most personally satisfying role I’ve had is where I’ve given the most back to the community
So – at least according to over 50 people on LinkedIn – I’m known for my strategy skills – and I feel there’s a certain sense of irony there in that I don’t feel like I’ve been all that strategic with my career.
Working for yourself can be loads of fun – it’s also the most challenging in many ways because of the number of tasks you have to be able to do / the knowledge base required is a lot broader.
So … I’m going to finish the presentation with what I consider to my proudest moment in my career...
Leading a team of people to put together Pivot Summit 2015 last year was by far the most fun and challenging project I’ve ever undertaken.
It took just over 4 months to go from an idea to be delivered to an audience of 300 people.
With major sponsors including Telstra and Samsung and funding from local, State and Federal Government – it was also the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
That said – it shone a bright light on digital in our community – and the need for Geelong to embrace all things technology and entrepreneurship and that’s something I couldn’t be happier about.
Being open to new opportunities is how Pivot Summit came out of nowhere for me.
You can probably also tell that the correlation between job titles, money, a companies profile, happiness – aren’t necessarily as strong as you might think.
So… it’s funny that what I came back to was a childhood love – technology. I treid science, I still do marketing – but ultimately the thing that has brought me the most joy was harnessing that passion I have for all things digital.
Turns out I didn’t need to get off my computer and go outside afterall.
