Iconography in Crime
Thrillers
By Lucy Napper
BLOOD
Blood is very common to appear in crime
thrillers. It gives the impression that no one is
safe. It also adds the element of realism as if
that character has actually been injured. The
blood can add elements of victory as the ‘bad
guy’ has been hurt or it can create sympathy
as a likable character has been hurt and can
create a twist in the storyline.
GUNS AND WEAPONS
If there is going to be blood there needs to be a
cause. If your to find out what the cause of the
injury is then its generally a gun or a knife of
some sort. The weapon adds the element of
danger to the thriller and can be used to build
suspense.
FLASE ACCUSATIONS
A lot of crime thrillers evolve the blame for the
crime being committed thrown around. People
can get falsely accused of doing completely
nothing.
This can entice the audience as occasionally the
audience will be put in a position where they
don’t even know who committed the crime and
therefore the audience will be making there
own assumptions.
MURDER
In all the films of this genre, murder occurs. It
can shape the whole storyline of certain films.
It adds the element of danger and creates the
realistic clear that no one is safe and anyone
can get murdered. It’s the use of real life
scenarios with added dramatic effects.
