Similar tools are available such as chef or puppet, but what makes PIE unique is its ability to work in multi-cloud deployments (Azure and AWS) along with multiple node OS types (linux and windows). It uses zookeeper to keep state and track dependencies across nodes and services.
When building PIE we actively considered how to implement it in a Rugged way for a DevOps team. As noted in the deck on slide 68, we are Rugged by Design and Devops by Culture. We see these as intersecting domains that have the ability to impact each other. For more info see ruggeddevops.org

DevOps and Microservice
DevOps in Practices document provides an overview of DevOps practices and microservice architecture. We are drowning in complexity—can we do better?
Today’s vast cloud-native infrastructure ecosystem is excellent. Unfortunately, it has grown very complex and hard to navigate. What tools to use for what job? How to compose them into a single coherent system? How to ensure the application’s guarantees and SLAs holistically? It can easily be overwhelming, and a lot falls on the Ops/SRE team that needs to manage it all.
Serverless to the rescue? Yes and no. It does provide a fantastic promise of a better DX for developers. But it has fallen short of this promise, stopped in its tracks halfway there.
Can we do better? Definitely. What we need is a new category of managed platforms that do full “vertical integration” of all infrastructure; providing a simple and high-level programming model allows the developer to focus on just three things: API definition, domain data, and business logic—i.e., working on direct business value. The rest, all of the rest, should be outsourced to the platform itself. Let me show you what I mean.

Cloud computing revolutionized application design, and changed the way people think about infrastructure. The rise of cloud computing coincided with a new generation of applications and services that required scale. New architecture and design had to take into account low latency network connectivity, geographic distribution, large real-time data stores, the ability to meet demand (while not knowing exactly how much demand to handle), and so much more. We refer to this as Internet Scale.
Yet most discussion of scale and cloud revolves around compute as virtualized instances, which have defined configurations and constrained options. Delivering on the promise of Internet Scale involves substantial upfront design, and a comprehensive understanding of the entire architecture - from the underlying hardware, to the operating system, the application stack, services, and deployment. And, it involves choice - choices you should make based on your requirements. Join us for a discussion on the many facets of Internet Scale, and how it can apply to your applications and services.

The recent development of the World Wide Web has moved from static HTML pages to more dynamic and intelligent web applications with desktop-like characteristics. AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) has been the main driver of this change, allowing for asynchronous updates to web application content from the server without page reloads. AJAX uses a combination of technologies including JavaScript, XML, and HTTP requests to update partial web page content dynamically. This enables web applications to have more interactive interfaces and deliver a more desktop-like experience to users.
