This document introduces the concept of photovoice, which is a participatory action research method that allows participants to narrate their lives and communities through photographs. It is grounded in Freirean education and feminism theories. The aim of photovoice is to cultivate critical consciousness, allow documentation and narration on participants' own terms, and reach policymakers. The practical steps involve identifying issues, inviting participants, providing education, documenting photos, narrating stories, developing ideas for social change, presenting work, and getting feedback. An example quote from a participant discusses how getting a college degree means getting off welfare.
