Dr. Thomas DeVere Wolsey is the Board Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer of the Institute to Advance International Education .
He teaches graduate literacy courses online at the University of
Central Florida. He worked in public schools for twenty years teaching
English and social studies. Prior to working with IAIE, he served as
program director for all graduate literacy programs at a large mid-
western university. Currently, his publications appear in The Journal of
Educational Administration and The Journal of Literacy Research and
Instruction, and others. His books are published by Pearson, Corwin
Press, Guilford Press, and Holcomb Hathaway. A new digital-only book
came out from Holcomb Hathaway in 2013. Two new books featuring
graphic organizers as literacy learning tools were released in October
2014. He served as co-editor of The California Reader, and, with
colleagues he guest-edited issues of The Journal of Educational
Administration and Teacher Education Quarterly. He is a frequent
guest speaker in Latin America on language learning topics.

Paula W. Dreyfuss was a continuation/alternative high
school teacher from Bonita Unified School District. She
earned her masters degree from Walden University. She
earned her undergraduate degree in business
administration from the University of Texas at Austin and
her teaching credential from California Polytechnic
Institute in Pomona. Prior to her service as a teacher,
she was a curriculum developer for a large online
commercial education company. She has also worked in
construction and development finance. Currently Paula is
working as a highly-qualified trainer for the Institute of
Advance International Education.

Michael Graves is Professor Emeritus of Literacy Education at the
University of Minnesota and a member of the Reading Hall of
Fame. His research and writing focus on vocabulary learning
and instruction and comprehension instruction. His recent books
include Teaching Vocabulary to English-Language Learners
(2012, with Diane August and Jeannette Mancilla-Martinez),
Reading Better, Reading Smarter: Designing Literature Lessons
for Adolescents (2011, with Deborah Appleman), Essential
Readings on Vocabulary Instruction (2009), Teaching Individual
Words: One Size Does Not Fit All (2009), and The Vocabulary
Book (2006). He has served as a consultant for a range of
government, nonprofit, and commercial organizations; as editor
of the Journal of Reading Behavior and associate editor of
Research in the Teaching of English; and on the editorial review
boards for Reading Research Quarterly, Research in the
Teaching of English, and Journal of Reading.

Dr. Elfrieda “Freddy” Hiebert is President and CEO of TextProject, a
nonprofit that provides open-access resources to support higher
reading levels, and a research associate at the University of California,
Santa Cruz. Dr. Hiebert received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has been on the
faculties of the Universities of Kentucky, Colorado-Boulder, Michigan,
and California-Berkeley. Her research addresses how fluency,
vocabulary, and knowledge can be fostered through appropriate texts.
Dr. Hiebert’s research has been published in numerous scholarly
journals. She has also authored or edited nine books. Dr. Hiebert was
the 2008 recipient of the William S. Gray Citation of Merit (awarded by
the International Reading Association). She is also a member of the
Reading Hall of Fame, a Fellow of the American Educational Research
Association, and the 2013 recipient of the American Educational
Research Association’s Research to Practice (Interpretive) award.

Dr. Patricia Henry has worked in K-12 and higher education as an instructor,
administrator, assessment coordinator, and currently serves as Director of
Assessment for the School of Education at an online University. Her K-12

other language students as well as teacher effectiveness, student success
and leadership, and school-wide assessment and accreditation. Her higher

Dr. Diane Lapp is Distinguished Professor at San Diego State University.
Her work at the University continues to be very applied to schools.
Throughout her career Diane has taught in elementary, middle, and
high schools. In 2012-14 she has once again had the opportunity to
return to the classroom to teach 6th grade English and Earth Science
at Health Sciences Middle School (HSMS) in San Diego. Diane is also an
instructional coach at both the middle school and Health Sciences
High and Middle College (HSHMC). Diane’s major areas of research
and instruction regard issues related to struggling readers and writers,
their families, and their teachers. Currently a coeditor of Voices From
The Middle, published by National Council of Teachers of English
