Brady is a 15-year-old, Caucasian male referred to me by his

me that his wife, Diane, passed away 3 years ago, although he
denies any relationship between Brady’s behavior and the death
of his mother.

Brady attended four sessions with me, including both individual
and family work. I also met with Steve alone to discuss the state of
his own mental health and parenting support needs. In the initial
evaluation session I suggested that Brady be tested for learning
and emotional disabilities. I provided a referral to a psychiatrist,
and I encouraged Steve to have Brady evaluated by the child study
team at his school. Steve unequivocally told me he would not
follow up with these referrals, telling me, “There is nothing wrong
with him. He just doesn’t listen, and he is disrespectful.”
After the initial session, I met individually with Brady and
completed a genogram and asked him to discuss each member
of his family. He described his father as angry and mean and
reported feeling afraid of him. When I inquired what he was afraid

Working With Families:
The Case of Brady
Brady is a 15-year-old, Caucasian male referred to me by his
previous social worker for a second evaluation. Brady’s father,
Steve, reports that his son is irritable, impulsive, and often in
trouble at school; has difficulty concentrating on work (both at
home and in school); and uses foul language. He also informed
me that his wife, Diane, passed away 3 years ago, although he
denies any relationship between Brady’s behavior and the death
of his mother.
Brady presented as immature and exhibited below-average
intelligence and emotional functioning. He reported feelings of
low self-esteem, fear of his father, and no desire to attend school.
Steve presented as emotionally deregulated and also emotionally
immature. He appeared very nervous and guarded in the sessions
with Brady. He verbalized frustration with Brady and feeling
overwhelmed trying to take care of his son’s needs.
Brady attended four sessions with me, including both individual
and family work. I also met with Steve alone to discuss the state of
his own mental health and parenting support needs. In the initial
evaluation session I suggested that Brady be tested for learning
and emotional disabilities. I provided a referral to a psychiatrist,
and I encouraged Steve to have Brady evaluated by the child study
team at his school. Steve unequivocally told me he would not
follow up with these referrals, telling me, “There is nothing wrong
with him. He just doesn’t listen, and he is disrespectful.”
After the initial session, I met individually with Brady and
completed a genogram and asked him to discuss each member
of his family. He described his father as angry and mean and
reported feeling afraid of him. When I inquired what he was afraid
of, Brady did not go into detail, simply saying, “getting in trouble.”
In the next follow-up session with both Steve and Brady present,
Steve immediately told me about an incident Brady had at school.
Steve was clearly frustrated and angry and began to call Brady
hurtful names. I asked Steve about his behavior and the words
used toward Brady. Brady interjected and told his dad that being

called these names made him feel afraid of him and further caused
him to feel badly about himself. Steve then began to discuss the
effects of his wife’s death on him and Brady and verbalized feel-
ings of hopelessness. I suggested that Steve follow up with my

Focusing Research Questions and Developing Hypotheses
One of the challenges in writing research questions is that they must be at once general enough to make the study feasible but narrow enough in order to focus the researcher on making choices that will underpin a successful research study. Implementing literature reviews is one way that a researcher can, at once, focus his or her research question and get a sense of what kind of research has already been conducted.
This week you consider the purpose and function of literature reviews. You also consider the consequences of not conducting a literature review and thus being unaware of pre-existing literature on the topic that you are researching.

. Include the following sections in your Final Project:
Section One:
Choose one of the three Case Studies focusing on a family in crisis. Each member of the family has unique issues that you must address. You must also determine the primary problems (this may include diagnostic impressions but not formal diagnoses), intervention, prevention, and education required to assist the family. In your project, do the following:
Identify the client and the presenting problem or symptoms. Briefly explain if anyone else is involved and how they contribute to the problem. Explain if anyone other than the “identified client” also could be identified as a client. If so, describe who and why.
Briefly describe any underlying problems or potential mental health diagnoses contributing to the primary problem that should be noted as you proceed with the client.
Briefly describe the presenting problem from the family’s perspective and what theoretical perspective you will use to assess, analyze, and develop a treatment plan for this case.

support service as a place for food and to charge her phone. After visiting several times for emergency
assistance, Bailey has been referred for ongoing support and case management services. At this time she has
no stable accommodation and is not working or attending school.
Her mother (Frida) and stepfather (Michael) live in a smaller town close by. Her biological father lives in
Malaysia and she has not had contact with him since she was 3 years old. Bailey has an older sister, Dana
(age 21) who attends university interstate. Bailey has told the youth service she gets along ok with her
mother and sister but the reason she does not return home is because she does not get along with her
stepfather. She used to see the school counsellor when she attended school but had never told her mother
about this.
Case study 2: Maya & Rifat
Organisation type: Refugee & Migrant Support Service
Rifat & his wife Maya are a couple with two children (ages 11, 9). The family are from Syria and arrived in
Australia 3 years ago as part of the Humanitarian and Refugee program. Rifatl’s brother had been politically
active in Syria and after he disappeared, local authorities began to target his family members. After a long
and arduous journey the family travelled to a refugee camp in Turkey before being accepted to come to
Australia.
After receiving some support when they first arrived, the children attend school and Rifat found work as a
mechanic. However some months ago he witnessed a violent crime at the business next door. He was
involved in providing a witness statement to the police, however since then he has not been able to return
to work and lost his job. He is increasingly spending time at home and does not allow visitors. Maya’s English
is limited and she does not have employment but has formed has some close friendships with families from
the Syrian community.
Case study 3: Marion & Evan & Sean
Organisation type: Family support service
Marion is 64 and has the full time care of their 5 year old grandson, Sean. Her son Evan (age 28) and
daughter-in-law Skye have been unable to look after Sean due to periods of drug use leading to the
involvement of Child Protection services. No formal orders are currently in place and Evan occasionally visits
Sean at Marion’s place. There have been some times in the past when Evan and Skye have visited when they
are under the influence of drugs or made threats and Marion has called the police.

Family will be accompanied by another female family member who notifier describes as ‘responsible’.
Notifier advised that they had applied the World Health Organisation classification for malnourishment to both children and it meets the ‘severe’ category.
Notifier also notes that it is unusual to need to admit a child of eight (8) years of age to hospital for malnourishment.
Notifier stated they have continued to experience difficulties in following-up health issues for the children because family spends large amounts of time at their Outstation and there is no service outreach to this location.
Previous involvement with the family has resulted in two (2) hospitalisations for Stephen and Mary for failure to thrive and each time their weight had increased on their return to community however contact is lost when family moves to the outstation. Notifier added that b/mo Jeanie has disclosed that there is often little to no food available at the Outstation as it runs out quickly.
Jeanie presents as disempowered when discussing family issues with the health centre and her own serious malnourished state supports the view that her nutritional needs take low priority in the family hierarchy.

Scenario One: Belinda
Belinda is an 18-year-old woman and is pregnant with her second child. Belinda believes she is 8.5 months pregnant, but she is not really sure. She has not seen a doctor since her initial doctor visit when she took the pregnancy test. She has not had any prenatal care during her pregnancy. Belinda’s first child, Benny, was delivered by cesarean section and is now 16 months old.
Belinda is an American Indian and has a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) for both Muscogee Creek Nation and Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes. Belinda is currently living in an apartment with her children’s father, but she suspects that they will be evicted soon for not paying rent. Neither Belinda nor the children’s father has a job, and both have been unemployed for several months. Belinda and her boyfriend do not have transportation. Additionally, neither has any personal identification documents—such as a social security card, birth certificate, or driver’s license—other than a CDIB card.
Belinda would like to become a nurse, but she dropped out of high school half way through the ninth grade.
Scenario Two: Jack
Jack is an 87-year-old widower who lives alone in his family home. Jack was diagnosed with dementia and the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease 7 years ago. Jack’s son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren live less than 15 minutes away. Jack is not allowed to drive anymore, but he sneaks out and drives his car whenever he feels like it.
Jack’s memory is very clear when asked about events that happened 10 years or more in the past, but his short-term memory is not as clear. Jack cannot remember dates or details. He gets frustrated and becomes aggravated when he cannot find things. When aggravated, Jack goes through his house pulling things out of drawers, which makes a huge mess.
Jack attends daytime activities for seniors at a local community church, but he can only do so once every other week due to lack of transportation. He also has several different medications he is required to take, but he cannot remember when he is supposed to take his medicine or if he has already taken them.
Jack’s family does not feel that he needs to move into a residential facility. Jack’s family purchased a small dog for him that he named Rosie. Jack’s family states his overall attitude has improved since he’s had Rosie, and he seems to always remember things related to her care.

Claire is 33 years old and lives with her younger sister and second cousin. Claire was fired from her last job at a 24-hour convenience store for behavioral issues and for not arriving on time for work.

They were both feeling ambivalent about it, and it had been the source of more than a few arguments, so they decided to come to counseling to address their concerns in a more productive way. They said they chose this agency because it was recognized as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) friendly. They asked about my sexual orientation and my history because they were concerned about my level of experience working with the issues they were presenting.
I thanked Kathleen and Lisa for sharing this concern, and I informed them of various programs I had worked in within the agency, including supportive services for LGBT youth in schools and in the community. I also shared our agency philosophy and mission, which includes outcome measures and engaging clients in feedback to evaluate practice.
I explained the tools we used to measure outcomes. The first form measures how each of them are feeling with regard to their life and current circumstances. There are four different scales to measure aspects of their lives, such as social, family, emotional health, etc. I also provided the chart on which I score the scales and track progress. I explained that the purpose was to see where they began to demonstrate progress with the work we were doing.
The second form measures how well I am providing treatment. I demonstrated the four scales that measure if the client feels heard and understood and if we addressed in session what they wanted to. I explained that this should address their concern about my ability to assist them. Because we would be evaluating both how they felt and how the sessions were going each week, we could make adjustments on.

Working With Immigrants and Refugees: The Case of Abdel
Abdel is a 40-year-old male, who was resettled as refugee in a major city on the East Coast. Abdel has a bachelor’s degree in theology from his home country and is fluent in English and four other languages. He fled his home country after being imprisoned and tortured for his political activism against an oppressive governmental regime. Prior to his resettlement, he spent 12 years living in a refugee camp in an African nation. Abdel was defined as a refugee by a United Nations affiliate within 6 months of arriving in the camp. He then waited 10 years before receiving word that he would be resettled to the United States and another 1½ years before arrangements were finalized.

General Background:
The Martinez family consists of Miguel, Jeannette, Gabby, Tommy, and Christina
(the adopted daughter of Jeannette’s cousin).
The family’s ethnicity is Hispanic, and both Miguel and Jeannette come from very
large extended families—many of whom live in the area.
They are Seventh-Day Adventists who are very involved in their church; they
both hold leadership positions in the church and attend services multiple times

Gabby is now 19 years old and has come to see you. She is still living in her

and arduous journey the family travelled to a refugee camp in Turkey before being accepted to come to

Belinda is currently living in an apartment with her children’s father, but she suspects that they will be evicted soon for not paying rent. Jack is an 87-year-old widower who lives alone in his family home. Jack was diagnosed with dementia and the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease 7 years ago. Jack’s son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren live less than 15 minutes away. Jack is not allowed to drive anymore, but he sneaks out and drives his car whenever he feels like it.
Jack’s memory is very clear when asked about events that happened 10 years or more in the past, but his short-term memory is not as clear. Jack cannot remember dates or details. He gets frustrated and becomes aggravated when he cannot find things. When aggravated, Jack goes through his house pulling things out of drawers, which makes a huge mess.
Jack attends daytime activities for seniors at a local community church, but he can only do so once every other week due to lack of transportation. He also has several different medications he is required to take, but he cannot remember when he is supposed to take his medicine or if he has already taken them.

I thanked Kathleen and Lisa for sharing this concern, and I informed them of various programs I had worked in within the agency, including supportive services for LGBT youth in schools and in the community. I also shared our agency philosophy and mission, which includes outcome measures and engaging clients in feedback to evaluate practice.
I explained the tools we used to measure outcomes. The first form measures how each of them are feeling with regard to their life and current circumstances. There are four different scales to measure aspects of their lives, such as social, family, emotional health, etc. I also provided the chart on which I score the scales and track progress. I explained that the purpose was to see where they began to demonstrate progress with the work we were doing.

Working With Immigrants and Refugees: The Case of Abdel
Abdel is a 40-year-old male, who was resettled as refugee in a major city on the East Coast. Abdel has a bachelor’s degree in theology from his home country and is fluent in English and four other languages. He fled his home country after being imprisoned and tortured for his political activism against an oppressive governmental regime. Prior to his resettlement, he spent 12 years living in a refugee camp in an African nation. Abdel was defined as a refugee by a United Nations affiliate within 6 months of arriving in the camp. He then waited 10 years before receiving word that he would be resettled to the United States and another 1½ years before arrangements were finalized.
Abdel was unable to contact his wife before escaping prison and fleeing his country; he has not been able to contact her in over 12 years, and her current whereabouts are unknown. General Background:
The Martinez family consists of Miguel, Jeannette, Gabby, Tommy, and Christina
(the adopted daughter of Jeannette’s cousin).
The family’s ethnicity is Hispanic, and both Miguel and Jeannette come from very
large extended families—many of whom live in the area.
They are Seventh-Day Adventists who are very involved in their church; they
both hold leadership positions in the church and attend services multiple times
each week.
Presenting Issues:
Gabby is now 19 years old and has come to see you. She is still living in her
parents’ home, which she says is “generally ok as long as [she does] what they
tell [her] to.”
Although she graduated from high school with fairly good grades, Gabby did not
go to college. She said that she wasn’t sure at the time what she wanted to do,
and her father told her “not to waste [his] money.”

Planet Earth’s surface is over 70% water, but less than 1% of the water on Earth is considered accessible, usable freshwater for sustaining humans’ and other organisms’ lives. Of the accessible freshwater, approximately 99% is located in aquifers, natural underground water chambers, and other groundwater sources. Unfortunately, humans are depleting the aquifers faster than they can be recharged by the hydrological cycle. Therefore, three quarters of groundwater is considered nonrenewable.
Conditions
The main reason we using groundwater resources mainly for drinking and irrigation. As a result, this not only decreases an important source of freshwater—it also can cause pollution of that groundwater by saltwater intrusion. The recharge rate of groundwater is further hindered by land clearing and deforestation caused by human development. When land is cleared for human development, more flooding occurs, the
transpiration rate
(the amount of water that evaporates into the atmosphere from plants) is reduced, and rainwater is inhibited from adequately
percolating
(penetrating the soil) into the ground to allow for aquifers and groundwater to be recharged.

Forty percent of the world’s food is produced via irrigation. As a result, if the current rate of groundwater usage continues, food production could be drastically reduced worldwide. We will discuss analysis of variance and regression, which are technically part of the same family of statistics known as the general linear method but are used to achieve different analytical goals
ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE
Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used so often that Iversen and Norpoth (1987) said they once had a student who thought this was the name of an Italian statistician.
You can think of analysis of variance as a whole family of procedures beginning with the simple and frequently used t-test and becoming quite complicated with the use of multiple dependent variables (MANOVA, to be explained later in this chapter) and covariates.
Although the simpler varieties of these statistics can actually be calculated by hand, it is assumed that you will use a statistical software package for your calculations.
If you want to see how these calculations are done, you could try to compute a correlation, chi-square, t-test, or ANOVA yourself (see Yuker, 1958; Field, 2009), but in general it is too time consuming and too subject to human error to do these by hand.
IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGY
Several terms are used in these analyses that you need to be familiar with to understand the analyses themselves and the results. Many will already be familiar to you.
Statistical significance: This indicates the probability that the differences found are a result of error, not the treatment. Stated in terms of the P value, the convention is to accept either a 1% (P ≤ 0.01), or 1 out of 100, or 5% (P ≤ 0.05), or 5 out of 100, possibility that any differences seen could have been due to error (Cortina & Dunlap, 2007).
Research hypothesis: A research hypothesis is a declarative statement of the expected relationship between the dependent and independent variable(s).
Null hypothesis: The null hypothesis, based on the research hypothesis, states that the predicted relationships will not be found or that those found could have occurred by chance, meaning the difference will not be statistically significant.
Effect size: This is defined by Cortina and Dunlap as “the amount of variance in one variable accounted for by another in the sample at hand” (2007, p. 231). Effect size estimates are helpful adjuncts to significance testing. An important limitation, however, is that they are heavily influenced by the type of treatment or manipulation that occurred and the measures that are used.
Confidence intervals: Although sometimes suggested as an adjunct or replacement for the significance level, confidence intervals are determined in part by the alpha (significance level) (Cortina & Dunlap, 2007). Likened to a margin of error, the confidence intervals indicate the range within which the true difference between means may lie. his chapter marks the beginning of the strategic management pro-
cess and is one of two that considers the external environment. At
this point it is appropriate to focus on factors external to the organiza-
tion and to view fi rm performance from an industrial organization
perspective. Internal factors are considered later in the process and in future
chapters.
Each business operates among a group of companies that produces compet-
ing products or services known as an industry. The concept of an industry is a
simple one, but it is often confused in everyday conversations. The term industry
does not refer to a single company or specifi c fi rms in general. For example, in
the statement, “A new industry is moving to the community,” the word industry
should be replaced by company or fi rm.
Although usually differences exist among competitors, each industry has its
own set of combat rules governing such issues as product quality, pricing, and
distribution. This is especially true for industries that contain a large number of
fi rms offering standardized products and services. Most competitors—but not
all—follow the rules. For example, most service stations in the United States
generally offer regular unleaded, midgrade, and premium unleaded gasoline at
prices that do not differ substantially from those at nearby stations. Breaking the
so-called rules and charting a different strategic course might be possible, but
may not be desirable. As such, it is important for strategic managers to under-
stand the structure of the industry(s) in which their fi rms operate before decid-
ing how to compete successfully.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and

Other depressive symptoms included feelings of sadness, helplessness, and guilt; crying spells, fatigue; loss of interest in daily activities; sleep problems (insomnia); and appetite problems and weight loss (dropped from a size 8 to a size 4 since November). Sylvie reported that she had no current suicidal thought or intent. Background Information: Sylvie stated that she had been separated from her husband, Kevin, since November. She said he is a “good man” but she “wants out” of the two year marriage. Last week she quit her job, due to her stress level, and since then has been unemployed. She is living in an apartment with her 15 year old daughter; her husband stated that he will pay this month’s rent only. Sylvie has not seen her two sons for the past several weeks at the insistence of her ex-husbands. She tearfully stated that “without my children I’m nothing—I don’t want to live”. Sylvie reported that she is facing embezzlement charges from a former employer. This situation began in July, and trial is pending in May. Sylvie denied that she embezzled any money from her employer. She quotes her lawyer as saying, “we have a good case.” Sylvie related that her main social support these days is from her 15 year old daughter, Casey and her friend, Jeremy. Sylvie stated that “Casey loves me and stands by me and is upset and crying now too.” Jeremy is a “good friend”,
- 3. “we’ve recently gotten closer although we’ve been friends for a while.” Sylvie additionally related that about one year ago she found a lump in her breast. Diagnostic tests were inconclusive about whether it was benign or malignant and this situation is being followed by her physicians. One month after finding the lump in her breast, Sylvie was diagnosed with and had surgery for an ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, last month Sylvie was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. When she was approximately 12, Sylvie was raped by an uncle. Several years ago this uncle returned to town and moved in with her grandmother. Sylvie related fearing for her own and her daughter’s safety. She does not visit her grandmother’s home anymore. Marriage and Children. Sylvie became pregnant with Casey at age 17; she was not married and lived with her parents. Three years later (when she was 20) she married, Pete, Casey’s father. John was born several years later. She divorced Pete before John was born when she found Pete “in bed with another woman”. At age 22, she married Teddy. They remained married for
- 4. approximately 6-7 years. Their son, Sid, was born when she was 24. She stated that Teddy was verbally and physically abusive to Casey and John. She also stated that Teddy verbally and physically abused her. Sylvie stated that she divorced Teddy because of his treatment of her two oldest children. After the divorce, she and Teddy shared custody of Sid, who lives with Teddy. Employment and Education. Sylvie graduated from high school and junior college. She has worked a variety of jobs, including housekeeping, retail sales, office work, and secretarial work. Her longest job was a 5 year stint as a legal secretary. She has lived and worked in various towns in the south. Legal Problems. Sylvie described a “problem of writing bad checks”. She related that she was arrested several times for this activity, which was an ongoing problem for a number of years. She stated that she dealt with this problem by not having a checking account “for years”, until this past year. Sylvie reported that she did not embezzle any money and that the charges were linked to her male employer’s wife’s jealousy of her. She denied any romantic or sexual relationship with her employer.
