HYDERABAD
CITY OF NAWABS…
How to reach…
By Air:
The Rajiv Gandhi International terminal, Hyderabad’s international airport is well-
connected with major cities across the globe. RGIA is the sixth busiest airport by
passenger traffic in India. The airport also has a domestic terminal called NT Rama
Rao which is connected to most of the Indian cities. Approximately 20 kilometres
away from the city, the airport is situated in the Shamshabad area. Almost all
airlines fly daily from and to Hyderabad. Once you reach here, you can find many
private and prepaid taxis outside the airport. The cab fare may vary depending upon
which part of Hyderabad city you would like to go.
By Bus:
Boasting of a huge bus terminal, the city is well-connected to its neighbouring towns
like Aurangabad, Bangalore, Mumbai,Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Tirupati and Panaji.
The bus terminal is managed and well-organised by Telangana State Road Transport
Corporation (TSRTC). You can choose from sleeper, deluxe, super deluxe, air-
conditioned and Volvo buses that are operated by both state and private companies.
The fare would depend upon the type of the bus and the destination.
By Train:
There are three major railheads in the city, namely, Hyderabad Railway Station,
Secunderabad Railway Station and Kachiguda Railway Station. These railheads
connect major Indian cities like Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.
Some of the popular trains that run daily from Hyderabad rail junctions are
Kacheguda Express, Hyderabad Express, Charminar Express, Konark Express,
Telangana Express and Shatabdi Express.
Road/Self Drive:
The roads in Hyderabad are good and are well-connected with national highways
and flyovers. Nearby cities like Nagpur, Pune (via NH 9), Mumbai (via expressway),
Warangal and Bangalore (via NH 7) can be easily accessed by road.

Transportation…
Bus:
Managed by the TSRTC body, Hyderabad city is well-connected by buses that take
you to different parts of the city. Bus-stops are present in different areas of
Hyderabad. You can find both air-conditioned as well as non-air-conditioned buses
spread throughout the city. Local buses like Metro Express and Metro Deluxe are
also available but sometimes they can get over-crowded. The bus routes are
displayed in two languages with English being the compulsory one. In case you want
to understand or get down at a specific place, you can check from the conductor.
Rail:
The city’s local train system also known as Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) is
quite popular mode of transport. Apart from being the fastest medium to reach a
place, it is also cheapest to travel via trains. You can check the entire train schedule
of MMTS from their official website so that you are well-aware of the routes and
stations from where you have to board the train. Daily as well as monthly passes are
also available for regular rail commuters to save on cost and time.
Auto-rickshaw:
While metered autos are available across the city, rarely would you come across an
auto-rickshaw driver who would agree to charge you as per the meter. You need to
haggle with the driver for a particular rate. However, the auto-rickshaw drivers are
well versed with the city lanes and narrow streets. Also, autos are cheaper mode of
transport in comparison to a cab.
Taxi/Cab:
In case you want a private vehicle and to escape the summer heat, you can hire a
prepaid taxi or a private cab to reach your destination. You can always book a cab
from different companies like Cell Cabs, Easy Cabs, Hyderabad Cabs, Dot Cabs, Meru
Cabs and many more. This is the most comfortable mode of transport in the city.

Temples to visit in Hyderabad:
 Shri Jagannath Temple
One of the temples to visit in Hyderabad is the Shri Jagannath Temple, a modern day temple
built by the local Oriya community over here. This replica of the original in Puri draws devotees
with its sanctum sanctorum housing statues of Lord Jagannath, and his siblings Lord Balabhadra
and Devi Subhadra.
The spectacular temple is well constructed with an attractive Shikhara measuring 70ft in height.
A true representation of the original, the construction in red sand stone is a visual marvel and is
known for its annual Ratha Yatra.
Timings: 6am – 11am, 5pm – pm
Photography: Not allowed, both inside and outside
.
 Birla Mandir
Located on the south end of Hussain Sagar Lake, the Birla Mandir is an enchanting modern
temple built atop the Kala Pahad, the twin hillock of the Naubat Pahad. With mixed architectural
styles from Odhisha and South Indian, the place of worship is embellished with exotic epic
scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata that are finely sculpted in marble. The inner shrine
of the temple has an 11ft tall replica of Tirupati Venkateswara.
Revel in several marble carvings depicting Indian mythology in the adjoining 'Mukha Mandapam'.
The temple also houses consorts of Venkateswara, Padmavati and Andal as well as has a
separate shrine dedicated to Buddha.
Timings: 7am – 12pm, 2pm – 9pm
Photography: Not Allowed
 Sri Rama Chandra Swamy Temple, Ammapali Village
A true treasure tucked away from the hustle of Hyderabad city is this 800yr old Sri Rama
Chandra Swamy Temple in Ammapali Village. Loaded with rich history, the place of worship
constructed in the 13th century has a deity, which was installed over 1,000yrs ago.
A monument older than the Golconda Fort, the Rama Temple is a temple to visit in Hyderabad.
An unlikely Rajasthani styled architecture, a step well in front of the main temple, a seven-
layered gopuram all make this unique. But perhaps the absence of Lord Rama’s most faithful
bhakt Hanuman from the main sanctum stands out the most. The idols of Rama, Lakshman, and
Sita are carved from a single stone. Head to the Parijat Tree here to tie a bundle of wish in a red
cloth.

Churches in Hyderabad…
St. George’s Church
I had to mention this particular church at the beginning itself because I’ve been a regular
member here since childhood. My Grandmother was the first to visit this church in her
younger days and continued with my father and the rest of us. It’s one of the oldest
churches and has been certified in the list of heritage buildings in Hyderabad. Though it has
been restored and given a new look now, as a personal choice I preferred the older vintage
look. The choir is one of the most popular in the city consisting of some soulful singers from
all age groups. The service starts at 8:30 am every Sunday and prolongs for about 2 ½ hours.
The very famous St. George’s Grammar School and College is associated with it.
Address: King Koti Road, King Koti, Abids, Hyderabad
St. Joseph’s Cathedral
Located very near to St. George’s is the very visually appealing catholic church namely St.
Joseph’s Cathedral. In 1869 Fr. Antonio Tagliabue bought a plot in Gunfowndry to build a
church, school and a convent which is now famously known as Rosary Convent. I had been
to this one in my childhood days with mom and dad and remember how attractive it looked
from the outside. The interiors are well done up as well and has a capacity for a large
number of people to participate in prayer and worship.
Address: Abids, Gun Foundry, Hyderabad
All Saints Church
Situated in Trimulgherry, this stunning church was built in the 18th
century under the British

the CSI (Church of South India) and has converted into a tamil Anglican church with services
rendered in English and tamil languages every week. It’s got a stained glass altar with Christ
on the Holy Cross and looks extremely wonderful.
Address: All Saints road, Trimulgherry, Secunderabad
Millenium Methodist Church
Previously just a small chapel built in 1883, it was then demolished in the new millennium
(2001) for a larger structure as the Methodists in the city were increasing in number and
hence got it’s name. it’s mainly a youth church with many youngsters attending and
conducting events and services every week. The plays here during Good Friday/Easter and
Christmas are a must watch for its breath taking performances by the youth. Every single
detail is taken well care of and is so organized. Food stalls and play areas are put up during
this period and is very popular in the city.

Wholesale market
01Shilparamam
Known For: Handicrafts, Chanderi Saris, Pochampally Fabric
If your tastes lean towards hand-crafted stuff, head to the Shilparamam crafts village in
Hitec City, a treasure trove of crafts and art. There are several permanent stalls here which
are operational all through the year, while periodic fairs bring in artisans and sellers from
across the country.
Chanderi saris and dress materials from Indore, Madhubani paintings from Patna, Ikat fabric
from Pochampally from Telangana among others. One small section of these sprawling
grounds is all about ceramic ware with beautiful collections of hand-painted pottery.
The prices might be a little over the top, but I had to mention this as can exception,
nevertheless.
2. Mozzamjahi Market.
Known For: Ikat Weaves, Brass Ware
Visit this market to walk into the past. Built by the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan in
the early 1900s, the Mozzamjahi Market is an impressive arcade with a quaint
appeal. It was originally a fruit market; fruits from here were sent to the Falaknuma
Palace for the Nizams and their guests.
Besides fruits, there were a whole lot of other shops that sold arms and ammunition,
paan, earthen ware and even groceries. People still throng this market for the
Karachi Bakery and the Famous Ice Cream which is also said to have been set up
when the market was built.
Ikat weaving is another local tradition, and an array of items on sale displays this
attractive design.
3. Secunderabad General Bazaar, M.G Road.
Known For: Jewellery, Kanchi/Zari Sarees, Wedding and Party Shopping.
The area is where one can buy traditional handmade jewellery. The Gold market is
flourishing here since 150 years.
The area is studded with Zari/Kanchi Saree shops and wedding related shops. Also
browse through colourful imitation jewellery and hair accessories sold on the street
or pick out footwear at small-time shops. You can also find stores that sell party
decorations at throwaway prices, slabs of chocolate for your dessert experiments or
a whole store dedicated only to buttons.
P.S, This road is the place where ‘Sir Ronald Ross’ is said to have discovered the
cause of ‘malaria’.
4. Sunday Book Bazaar, Abids.
Known For: Reasonably Priced Second-Hand books Sale
With some patience and interest, you might also find a rare edition or an out-of-print
book. The books here are essentially second-hand original copies or the lesser
desirable pirated versions. You can also sell your old books here. Of course, do
bargain well for a good price whether you are buying or selling.
5. Laad Bazaar (Or Chudi Bazaar).
Known For: Bangles (of every possible kind), Khara Dupattas, Pearls
Hyderabadi lac bangles are famous not just in the city but in chic boutiques abroad
too. Their vivid shades and sheen make them special gifts as well. Just off
Charminar, on the way to the Chowmahalla Palace is the street named Laad Bazaar,
which was apparently set up by Quli Qutb Shah at the time of his daughter’s
wedding. A pair of glass bangles cost as little as Rs 10, while lacquer ones
could cost about Rs 120.
TIP: Check out a shop called ‘Fine Bangles’ for lacquer and heavily decorated
bangles, and ‘Meena Bangles’ for glass ones. The lane is dotted with shops on
both sides, open from 11 am to 11.30 pm. Remember to bargain hard.
While it is sheer pleasure to simply see and try out the various varieties of bangles, it
is also a treat to hear the stories that the sellers will indulge you with. The bangles
have interesting names too, like khopda for the entire set to go with the traditional
Hyderabadi bridal outfit and the family set with bachche which are thinner bangles to
be interspersed with the broader ones to form a set.
This is also the place where you could lay your hands on some amazing traditional
Khara Dupattas, and of course, the renowned Hyderabadi Pearls.
TIP: Junk Pearl Jewellery costs something between Rs 100 and Rs 200 at ‘Sri
Jagadamba Pearls’, while pearl bangles cost around Rs 400. ‘Krishna Pearls’ is
another place near Charminar known for genuine pearls.
6. Jummerat Bazaar (Chor Bazaar).
Known For: Stolen Ware (*laughs*) , Anything and Everything at cheap prices!
Jummeraat, which literally means the eve of Friday, is the name given to this flea
market that is set up every Thursday near the Muslim Jung bridge area near Begum
Bazaar. This one begins just before sunrise and some stuff here is said to be stolen
ware, which is why the market is informally also called Chor Bazaar.
There is no limit to what you might find here-from imitation jewellery to a whole
cricket set that you can pick out for Rs 60. Torches, table ware, nails and hammers,
new and second hand cycles, new and mostly second hand clothing; there’s a whole
world out here.
TIP : Don’t be fooled by the stories the shopkeepers tell you; these are mere
hard-selling tactics.
7. Antique Market, Troop Bazar
Known For: Exotic Antiques
From crockery from the time of the Nizams to quaint chandeliers that might not be
original but replicas made to look like the original pieces, wooden chests, ornate
mirrors, picture frames; every item in a shop supposedly has a history, though the
authenticity of the shopkeepers’ stories should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Apart from buying antiques, you could also sell something from
your collection here.
8. Gudimalkapur Flower Market.
Known For: Wholesale Flower Market
A treat for the senses with more than a hundred varieties of flowers set beautifully in the
open, this place opens as early as four in the morning and is on till about seven in the

A kilo of asters is available for as cheap as Rs 10 here, while roses could be priced lesser.
They have interesting names for roses like “five-star” for a premium variety or “ruby” for
deep red coloured ones. Moreover, you could indulge in carnations of thirty different
shades, gladioli and Dutch roses, besides orchids and lilies.
9. Charminar Bazaar.
Known For: Pearls, Ethnic Clothing, Anything BLING (Accessories, Jewellery, Laces)
It is famed for its exquisite pearls, which are often embellished with gold and silver. Basra
pearl is the most popular pearl, and is unrivalled in terms of color and luster.
Heading towards Charminar is like being transported to another town. The colours and
flavours of this part of Hyderabad are starkly different from the newer parts of the city. This
bustling market has lots to choose from when it comes to clothing-especially ethnic saris,
sherwanis, and traditional Hyderabadi khada dupatta that is worn for weddings and dress
materials.
Everything here is pretty high on the bling factor, be it the ornately embellished fabric or
dazzling imitation jewellery and accessories. There are shops that exclusively sell
accessories-shiny motifs, spangled laces and sparkling beads. Fashion designers and
boutique owners throng this market to buy embellishments and gota. You could pick out
smaller knick knacks off the street like little plastic toys for children, surma or kohl vials,
glass and lac bangles as well as mehendi cones and sachets.
TIP: For black and purple pearl earrings with zircon and platinum finish (priced between Rs
180 and Rs 250), visit a shop called ‘Princess Pearls’.

# Just Some Tips:
1) There is no shortage of pearls in Hyderabad shops, but the market is saturated
with fakes, so shoppers need to exercise caution. It is important to recognize the feel
of a genuine pearl. High quality pearls are very smooth, round and reflective.
Rubbing the pearl against your teeth is a good way to check the authenticity of the
pearl: the real thing will feel gritty, while a fake pearl will glide across.
2) Bargaining is the key to getting a good price; insist on a 30 percent discount but if
your skills are sharp you could find a 50 percent knock down is within reach.
17. Furniture Market
i) If wooden furniture's what you're looking for, there are furniture shops besides and
around Hyderabad Railway station near Nampally. They sell beanbags too for abound
600rs/couch, give them a visit.
ii) There are furniture showrooms in places around Afzalgunj bus stand, There are quiet a
lot of furniture shops lined up there, selling good quality of furniture, at the best possible
prices. They did look pretty decent from the outside, do give them a visit too, if you've got
time.
iii) If cane furniture's something which you're willing to try, there's this HUGE shop in Lakdi
ka pul, which sells Awesome Cane furniture at pretty reasonable prices, cane's the thing, its
lightweight, flexible yet rigid, and there's a lot of scope for innovation while coming to
design something using them. And, there's nothing like having a cane swing hanging in your
room.

Hyderabad City Of Nawabs

  • 1. HYDERABAD CITY OF NAWABS… How to reach… By Air: The Rajiv Gandhi International terminal, Hyderabad’s international airport is well- connected with major cities across the globe. RGIA is the sixth busiest airport by passenger traffic in India. The airport also has a domestic terminal called NT Rama Rao which is connected to most of the Indian cities. Approximately 20 kilometres away from the city, the airport is situated in the Shamshabad area. Almost all airlines fly daily from and to Hyderabad. Once you reach here, you can find many private and prepaid taxis outside the airport. The cab fare may vary depending upon which part of Hyderabad city you would like to go. By Bus: Boasting of a huge bus terminal, the city is well-connected to its neighbouring towns like Aurangabad, Bangalore, Mumbai,Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Tirupati and Panaji. The bus terminal is managed and well-organised by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC). You can choose from sleeper, deluxe, super deluxe, air- conditioned and Volvo buses that are operated by both state and private companies. The fare would depend upon the type of the bus and the destination. By Train: There are three major railheads in the city, namely, Hyderabad Railway Station, Secunderabad Railway Station and Kachiguda Railway Station. These railheads connect major Indian cities like Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. Some of the popular trains that run daily from Hyderabad rail junctions are Kacheguda Express, Hyderabad Express, Charminar Express, Konark Express, Telangana Express and Shatabdi Express.
  • 2. Road/Self Drive: The roads in Hyderabad are good and are well-connected with national highways and flyovers. Nearby cities like Nagpur, Pune (via NH 9), Mumbai (via expressway), Warangal and Bangalore (via NH 7) can be easily accessed by road. Outer ring road Transportation… Bus: Managed by the TSRTC body, Hyderabad city is well-connected by buses that take you to different parts of the city. Bus-stops are present in different areas of Hyderabad. You can find both air-conditioned as well as non-air-conditioned buses spread throughout the city. Local buses like Metro Express and Metro Deluxe are also available but sometimes they can get over-crowded. The bus routes are displayed in two languages with English being the compulsory one. In case you want to understand or get down at a specific place, you can check from the conductor. Rail: The city’s local train system also known as Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) is quite popular mode of transport. Apart from being the fastest medium to reach a place, it is also cheapest to travel via trains. You can check the entire train schedule of MMTS from their official website so that you are well-aware of the routes and stations from where you have to board the train. Daily as well as monthly passes are also available for regular rail commuters to save on cost and time. Auto-rickshaw: While metered autos are available across the city, rarely would you come across an auto-rickshaw driver who would agree to charge you as per the meter. You need to haggle with the driver for a particular rate. However, the auto-rickshaw drivers are well versed with the city lanes and narrow streets. Also, autos are cheaper mode of transport in comparison to a cab. Taxi/Cab: In case you want a private vehicle and to escape the summer heat, you can hire a prepaid taxi or a private cab to reach your destination. You can always book a cab from different companies like Cell Cabs, Easy Cabs, Hyderabad Cabs, Dot Cabs, Meru Cabs and many more. This is the most comfortable mode of transport in the city.

  • 24. Temples to visit in Hyderabad:  Shri Jagannath Temple One of the temples to visit in Hyderabad is the Shri Jagannath Temple, a modern day temple built by the local Oriya community over here. This replica of the original in Puri draws devotees with its sanctum sanctorum housing statues of Lord Jagannath, and his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. The spectacular temple is well constructed with an attractive Shikhara measuring 70ft in height. A true representation of the original, the construction in red sand stone is a visual marvel and is known for its annual Ratha Yatra. • 25.  Birla Mandir Located on the south end of Hussain Sagar Lake, the Birla Mandir is an enchanting modern temple built atop the Kala Pahad, the twin hillock of the Naubat Pahad. With mixed architectural styles from Odhisha and South Indian, the place of worship is embellished with exotic epic scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata that are finely sculpted in marble. The inner shrine of the temple has an 11ft tall replica of Tirupati Venkateswara. Revel in several marble carvings depicting Indian mythology in the adjoining 'Mukha Mandapam'. The temple also houses consorts of Venkateswara, Padmavati and Andal as well as has a separate shrine dedicated to Buddha. Timings: 7am – 12pm, 2pm – 9pm Photography: Not Allowed
  • 26.  Sri Rama Chandra Swamy Temple, Ammapali Village A true treasure tucked away from the hustle of Hyderabad city is this 800yr old Sri Rama Chandra Swamy Temple in Ammapali Village. Loaded with rich history, the place of worship constructed in the 13th century has a deity, which was installed over 1,000yrs ago. A monument older than the Golconda Fort, the Rama Temple is a temple to visit in Hyderabad. An unlikely Rajasthani styled architecture, a step well in front of the main temple, a seven- layered gopuram all make this unique. But perhaps the absence of Lord Rama’s most faithful bhakt Hanuman from the main sanctum stands out the most. The idols of Rama, Lakshman, and Sita are carved from a single stone. Head to the Parijat Tree here to tie a bundle of wish in a red cloth. Timings: NA Photography: Allowed

It was originally a fruit market; fruits from here were sent to the Falaknuma Palace for the Nizams and their guests. Besides fruits, there were a whole lot of other shops that sold arms and ammunition, paan, earthen ware and even groceries. People still throng this market for the Karachi Bakery and the Famous Ice Cream which is also said to have been set up when the market was built.
