Myth #2 MYTH: Hydrocarbon refrigerants should not be used because they are flammable FACT: Hydrocarbons refrigerants actually present fewer risks to users and service technicians than second generation refrigerants (R134a) Well established systems and processes are in place to use hydrocarbons safely. They have been used in all kinds of applications for hundreds of years, and are one of the most well understood chemicals on earth. Hydrocarbons do not break down to form the toxic chemicals such as Hydrofluoric Acid and Trifluoro-acetic acid (like R134a does)  System lubricants have always been flammable anyway.
