Anticipating Motivation to Exercise

    Motivator: Social Cooperation

       On a common process: Friend wants you as her running buddy

       Toward a common goal: Friend suggests that you team up and
        lose 5 1bs together
+
    Motivator: Competition

       Friendly competition, but a desire to win: Tug-of-war battle of
        one side of the family against the other

       Rival competition: Sports games against competitors

       Self competition: Want to beat your past running time on the
        mile
+
    Motivator: Social Good

       Raising money for a charity: Walking in a Walkathon to Stop
        Diabetes

       To set a good example for those who look up to you: Older
        sister goes walking to motivate little sister to exercise
+
    Motivator: Keeping up Appearances

       Improving public image: Publically say that you’re training for a
        marathon at work, to seem like you’re athletic

       Improving self image: Start swimming every day to feel good
        about your self
           The act of accomplishing the goal is motivating
           The outcome of getting fit builds self image as well
+
    Motivator: New Reset Points

       Feeling motivated at a new time of year: Adding exercise to list
        of New Year’s Resolutions
+
    Motivator: External sources of
    inspiration
       Seeing positive examples of those who have overcome
        obstacles to exercise: Watching the Paralypic Games

       Seeing negative examples of what happens when people don’t
        exercise: Reading about lack of exercise contributing to
        diabetes
+
    Summary of Motivators
