grading.
 Inspect project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications.
2
Test laboratory Establishment:
 Ensure that test laboratory is established at site of civil work.
 Instruments and apparatus used in lab should have calibration certification.
Testing of Compacted Layer
 Ensure that one set is conducted in compacted soil for min. 95% of max. Dry density in layer by
layer as specified in technical specification.
 Ensure additional two samples are tested where the sample does not satisfy the specified
condition after further compaction of the layer.
 Ensure that the material for filling is as per standard and the source is tested and got approved.
 Standard proctor test to determine OMC Maximum Dry Density and free swell index. Etc.
 Ensure that the one set of test is conducted in compacted soil around foundations to min 85% of
max. Dry density in layer by layer on specified in tech. Specification.
DEWATERING SYSTEM:
A number of methods are available for controlling the inflow of water into an excavation; the
Choice of method will depend on:
 The nature and permeability of the ground.
 The extent of the area to be dewatered.
 The depth of the water table below ground level and the amount by which it has to be lowered.
 The proposed methods of excavation and ground support.
 The Proximity of existing structures, the proximity of water courses etc.
The available methods of groundwater control fall into the following basic groups:
 Surface water control like ditches, training walls, embankments. Simple methods of Diverting
surface water
 Gravity drainage. Relatively impermeable soils. Open excavations especially on Sloping sites.
Simple pumping equipment.
 Sump pumping.
 WellPoint systems with suction pumps.
 Shallow (bored) wells with pumps.
 Deep (bored) wells with pumps.
 Educator system.
 Drainage galleries. Removal of large quantities of water for dam abutments, cut-offs,
 Landslides etc. Large quantities of water can be drained into gallery (small diameter Tunnel)
 And disposed of by conventional large – scale pumps.
 Electro-osmosis. Used in low permeability soils (silty, silty clays, some peats) when no other
method is suitable. Direct current electricity is applied from anodes (steel rods) to cathodes
(well-points, i.e. small diameter filter wells).
WATER RETAINING STRUCTURE:
 Ensure that water fill test is conducted as leak test for neutralizing sump, cold water sump, and
clarify clean water reservoir.
ELASTOMERIC WATER PROOFING:
 Check for proper laying.
 Before any waterproofing work is started the waterproofing applicator shall thoroughly examine
all Surfaces for any deficiencies. Should any deficiencies exist, the architect, owner, or general
Contractor shall be notified in writing and corrections made.
 A deck slope greater than 2":12" requires that the membrane be 100% adhered to the substrate.
 Concrete shall be cured at least 7 days or pass ASTM D 4263.
3
 Earth: remove all vegetation, rocks larger than 3/4", etc. Substrate shall be raked smooth, filling
in Depressions. Apply a 3" minimum sand bed compacted to 95% Modified Proctor in
accordance With ASTM D 698 over earth substrate.
 Ensure that walls provided with all necessary horizontal and vertical damp-proof courses and
flashing. The damp courses and flashing shall be of bitumen impregnated asbestos fiber with a
lead core, or similar approved material.
 Ensure that where concrete is in contact with ground water or soil with high salt content, high
acidity or other substance which would be harmful to the concrete, the concrete shall be
protected on the bottom and all sides with bit mastic coating.
 Check concrete pile protection shall consist of permanent Bitumen coated mild steel casing of
6mm wall thickness from the top of the pile to bedrock surrounded by 75mm thickness of
blinding concrete for its entire length. The top of the protective steel casing shall have a
minimum lap of 100mm with the protective impervious membrane surrounding the concrete
pile cap or footing as detailed in the above 'Concrete Protection'. This entire detail shall be
carried out strictly in accordance with Drawings appended to this Specification.
