1. HURST LANE PLACE
Scheme Aims and Objectives
The Council is planning as part of the Hurst Lane Place project
to invest in highway improvement works in the Chester Road /
Hurst Lane North area.
The Hurst Lane Place project aims to make visiting the area
more accessible and convenient, improve road safety -
particularly for pedestrians and vulnerable road users and
update the look of the area.
The wider objective of the scheme is to support the economy
and encourage additional investment in the area.
The specific scheme aims are to:
• Improve Road Safety, particularly for pedestrians
• Provide additional / improved on street parking
• Improve accessibility and comfort for pedestrians
• Improve and update the quality and look of the Public Realm
(Highway areas)
The Scheme
The scheme is located on the Chester Road at the Hurst Lane /
Hurst Lane North and Hazelhurst Road junctions in the Castle
Bromwich area of Solihull. It is limited to the areas of public
highway that are maintained by the Council within the area
shown on the plan. The other areas immediately in front of the
local shops / businesses, which are mainly used for parking, are
privately owned.
What we know about the area
In 2010 we asked local residents, road users and stakeholders what were the issues and concerns for the Chester Road.
This helped us understand how we could improve the area. The comments identified a number of opportunities for the
section of Chester Road centred on the local shopping area at Hurst Lane North.
The mains issues local people identified were:
• the area feels unattractive and at times unsafe
• provision for pedestrians and cyclists was poor, especially for pedestrians wanting to cross the road
• parking demand for the shops / businesses appears to exceed supply and can be inconsiderate
• traffic delays and speeds on the Chester Road and side roads.
