This document discusses humor and laughter from an evolutionary perspective. It argues that humor involves physiological changes and sensations similar to emotions, but without the beliefs, desires, or motivations for adaptive actions that standard emotions produce. Laughter serves as a play signal to indicate that any threatening or worrisome behaviors are not serious or practical in intent. The objects of amusement also need not be people, things, or events, but can involve nonsensical or absurd ideas, as demonstrated by examples of jokes and comedic quotes.
