- https://www.nami.org/Learn-More/Mental-Health-By-the-Numbers In a study conducted by _, they studied the change in understanding of mental illness from 1996 to 2006. Their results showed that over the decade, people began to understand the neurobiological influences of mental illness, however there was still a stigma attached to these conditions. The participants showed their unwillingness to work, socialize, be friends with, or be neighbors with people who have schizophrenia, alcohol dependence, and schizophrenia. No significant decrease was reported in any indicator of stigma, and levels remained high (Table 1). A majority of the public continued to express an unwillingness to work closely with the person in the vignette (62% for schizophrenia, 74% for alcohol dependence), socialize with the person (52% for schizophrenia, 54% for alcohol dependence), or have the person marry into their family (69% for schizophrenia, 79% for alcohol dependence). In fact, significantly more respondents in the 2006 survey than the 1996 survey reported an unwillingness to have someone with schizophrenia as a neighbor (from 34% to 45%; F=6.31, p=0.01) or to have someone with alcohol dependence marry into their family (from 70% to 79%; F=4.01, p=0.05). Furthermore, a majority again reported that the vignette character with schizophrenia or alcohol dependence would likely be violent toward others. While stigmatizing reactions did not significantly decrease for the depression vignette, levels remained comparatively lower. Findings were unaffected by controls

The goal is to show that people with mental health conditions are humans too. We want to humanize these people rather than ostracize them from the community The goal is to normalize mental health and show that there is a community of people who are going through similar conditions, as well as a communition who can act as allies/ supporters
