This document discusses humanitarian demining and minefield reconnaissance using technology. It describes how landmines contaminate many countries and endanger civilians, and how current demining methods are dangerous, costly and slow. It proposes using robotic systems and sensors for more effective minefield mapping and detection of landmines and explosives. One project discussed is MineProbe, which involves developing mobile robots with perception systems like computer vision, ground penetrating radar and electromagnetic induction to automatically detect and map minefields to help work towards clearing landmines globally.

The Digital Observatory for Protected Areas (DOPA) has been developed over the last years by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in collaboration with the UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and BirdLife International to mainly support the work of the CBD Secretariat and the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020.
By providing a broad range of globally consistent and comparable indicators, based on global reference data sets, on protected area coverage, connectivity, species, ecosystems and pressures at country, ecoregion and protected area scale, the DOPA is the most advanced information system on protected areas and a reference information system that is particularly relevant for the UN Sustainable Development Goals 14 (Life below Water) and 15 (Life on Land).
These slides are presenting DOPA Explorer 3.0, a recently released (Nov. 2018) web-based application offering an unprecedented level of information on terrestrial, coastal and marine protected areas globally. DOPA Explorer 3.0 uses, among other indicators and data sources, new information on land degradation derived from JRC's latest World Atlas of Desertification (WAD) and earth observations data derived from Copernicus, the European Union's Earth Observation Programme. By doing so, this new version of DOPA Explorer provides unique information bridging the gap between Aichi Targets 5 on the loss of natural habitats, Target 11 on protected areas and Target 15 on the restoration of ecosystems.
This article presents an analysis of aerial thermographic images of terrain with antipersonnel mines to identify the presence or absence of these artifacts using digital image processing and pattern recognition. these images captured were by a thermal camera attached to an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The UAV flew over a natural area with sparse vegetation, taking images under uncontrolled conditions, where prototypes of the landmines were buried at various depths. The method achieved remarkable results with a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) classifier, detecting suspicious areas with an average success rate of 97.1% for images taken at 1 meter above the ground and 88.8% at higher altitudes
This report provides the details of the widely adopted methods of mining, both surface and underground and to have an overview of all the operations that are made to explore the economic mineral resources.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the fastest growing fields of technology thanks to its strong and increasingly diversified commercial revenue stream. The anticipated benefits of the next wave of AI encouraged politicians, economists and policy makers to pay more attention to AI. The next wave of strong/general AI and superintelligence will open the doors to create machines able to behave cognitively like a super human at both individual level and group level in unstructured, dynamic and partially observable environments. This may represent a significant existential risk to humanity if not regulated and smartly directed toward the benefit of humanity. Aligned with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by UN Member States, next wave of AI can play instrumental roles in achieving these goals. This talk highlights the role of AI as an enabler for achieving the SDGs.
The fourth industrial revolution Industry 4.0 represents a new paradigm shift from “centralized” to “decentralized” industry relies on cyber-physical based automation where sensors send data directly to the cloud and services such as monitoring, control and optimization automatically subscribe to necessary data in real-time. In the coming years, these technologies will be seen as a viable alternative to current manufacturing processes. According to a recent report by Markets and Markets, smart factory technology will have global market size of 74.80 Billion USD by 2022. The talk provides a comprehensive introduction to Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory. Technical challenges and social implications of smart factory will be discussed. The applicability of these emerging technologies in developing economies is highlighted in this talk as well.
