I. Management Functions and Roles
II. Managing the Filipino as a Worker
2
What is
Management?
○The process of dealing with or
controlling things or people
○The process of reaching
organizational goals by working with
and through people and other
organizational resources
○The term "management" may also
refer to those people who manage an
organization.
3
Management
Functions
and Roles
Difference
Between
Function and
Role
The main difference between
role and function is that role is a part
played by someone in a particular
situation whereas function is the
duty of someone or the natural
purpose of something.
6
Management
Functions
•Planning
•Organizing
•Leading
•Controlling
1. Planning
7
○Planning is the function of management that
involves determining the best course of action
for achieving the prioritised objectives of the
organisation as defined and agreed by the
executive and the governing body
•Planning means identifying an organization’s
goals and strategies, as well as the appropriate
organizational resources required to achieve
these goals and implement those strategies
2. Organizing
○ Organizing is the process of arranging and
allocating work, authority, and resources
among an organization’s members
8
•Organizing involves developing an
organizational structure to ensure the
accomplishment of the organisation’s objectives
and implementation of its strategic plan
3. Leading
○Involves inspiring and motivating
workers to work hard to achieve
organizational goals
9
• It can be defined as guiding the activities
of organization members in the direction
that helps the organization move towards
the fulfilment of the goals
4. Controlling
○It is a monitoring progress toward goal
achievement and then taking corrective
action when needed.
10
•A manager must receive feedback about a
process in order to analyse any deviations from
the plan and make necessary adjustments to
correct negative deviations and prevent future
deviations
11
Management
Roles
•Interpersonal
Figurehead
Leader
Liaison
•Informational
Monitor
Disseminator
Spokesperson
•Decisional
Entrepreneur
Disturbance Handler
Resource Allocator
Negotiator
Interpersonal
Role
What is Interpersonal Role???
○It cover the relationships that a manager has to
have with others such as employees, superiors,
suppliers and customers
○The managerial roles in this category
involve providing information and ideas
12
Interpersonal
Role
Figurehead
○ As a figurehead, he represents the face of the
company when interacting with people.
○ A figurehead has social, ceremonial and legal
responsibilities. He is expected to be a source of
inspiration. People look up to him as a person
with authority.
○ A figurehead is someone who appears to be in
charge, but who really holds very little
influence.
13
Interpersonal
Role
Leader
○ As leader, managers have to bring together
the needs of an organization and those of
the individuals under their command.
○ Managing the performance and
responsibilities of everyone in the group.
○ Responsibility for the work of
subordinates, motivating and encouraging
employees, exercising their formal
authority.
14
Interpersonal
Role
Liaison
○ Making contacts outside the vertical chain of
command including peers in other companies or
departments, and government and trade
organization representatives
○ Liaison between the company and suppliers or
customers
○ Communicate with external contacts on behalf of
an organization
15
Informational
Role
What is Informational Role???
○ It involves processing and managing
information
16
• Informational role includes collecting
information, receiving information and
disseminating information
Informational
Category
Monitor
○ Actively seeks information that might be
of value to the organization in general
○ Monitoring the team in terms of both
their productivity, and their well-being.
17
Informational
Category
Disseminator
○ Passing on privileged information directly to
subordinates
Spokesperson
○ Managers represent and speak for their
organization. In this role you're responsible for
transmitting information about your
organization and its goals to the public
18
Decisional
Category
Entrepreneur
○ Managers make decisions about changing what is
happening in an organization. They may have to both
initiate change and take an active part in deciding
exactly what is to be done. In principle, they are
acting voluntarily.
19
○ Creating and controlling change within the
organization. This means solving problems,
generating new ideas, and implementing
them.
Decisional
Category
Disturbance Handler
○ Requires to make decisions arising from events
that are beyond their control and which are
unpredictable
○ When an organization or team hits an unexpected
roadblock, it's the manager who must take charge
20
Decisional
Category
Negotiator
○ The negotiation role is put in the decisional
category because it is 'resource trading in real
time'. A manager has to negotiate with others
and in the process be able to make decisions
about the commitment of organisational
resources
○ Committing organizational resources in “real-
time” with the broad information available from
their informational roles.
21
Decisional
Category
Resource Allocator
○ A manager has to make decisions about the
allocation of money, people, equipment, time and
so on. Mintzberg point out that in doing so a
manager is actually scheduling time, programming
work and authorising actions
○ Determine where organizational resources are
best applied. This involves allocating funding, as
well as assigning staff and other organizational
resources
○ Decides who gets what

Editor's Notes

  1. Most likely, employers will face cultural differences with Filipino Workers. What’s normal for them are not normal for us. Sometimes, both parties find it difficult to adjust seeing as culture is deeply ingrained in us. Avoid embarrassing- who wants this? Usually Filipinos doesn’t want to admit that they can’t do a job, so doing this in front of their colleagues is basically saying that they’re incompetent. That’s a direct hit to pride. Directly- sensitive, be careful what you say Guerrilla fighters- if pushed past the breaking point, Filipinos won’t stay down. Who wouldn’t? They can fight back like a pro – fist fights and verbal. Better be kept as an ally than as an enemy. Bigay todo, kala mo makikipag- patayan kung lumaban.
  2. Cheap- foreigners have a connotation na since mura lang yung bayad sa atin, our works quality is cheap as well. Their normal wage is different from ours, malaki na sa atin yun. Some Filipinos, actually gives off this expression because… Excuses- usually causes headache, bad image and tendency to get fried from the employer Slow internet and workplace- not all Filipinos have their own internet connection at home or workplace, some sa computer shops nagwo- work Updates- sometimes filipino doesn’t give updates at per request of their employee (me too). Employers have to ask first kasi hindi tayo nagkukusa to give one xD Calamities- brown outs, family before career first, no internet, distracted Lazy- some filipinos are lazy, some goody two shoes. They revealed that sometimes yung ibang Filipino’s are actually just too lazy to do things kaya kung ano anong excuses yung binibigay nila. Time zones- umaga at gabi
  3. Since they’re actually related to one another, pinagsama- sama ko nalang sila. Same lang naman kasi yung way to deal with them. Simple lang: be understanding.
  4. Time & Money- despite the complaints and headaches, most employers still find Filipino workers worth their time and money because despite being “lazy” and “cheap”, our work isn’t. Our diligence also makes up for it. Enough, that most employers asks us to stay.
  5. are alphabets are basically the English alphabet, so we’re quick to pick up the English language Filipinos have high regard for their boss, thus the “ma’am” and “sirs” kahit mahirap yung trabaho, basta worth it yung sahod, titiisin ng mga Filipinos yan
  6. Taga- linis xD Pag- malinis yung paligid, most likely mas good mood daw ang mga Pinoy to work with.
  7. Chill- due to a lot of calamities, we quickly adapt to danger and most likely have the most clear/ level head during a crisis
  8. Entertainers- kenkoy talaga tayo eh OT- good quality pala ito. Sa paningin ng mga boss, ang sisipag natin, yung totoo yung OT payment yung habol natin. Jk. XD
  9. Diversity With Filipinos, an “okay” or a “yes” could mean different things. “Opo, pero…” you need to clarify things. Filipinos value hierarchy. Therefore, set a good example of a leader to them that they’ll recognize and respect you. Clients should always give them positive feedback. Put emphasis on punctuality despite the differences in internet connection or timezone.
