OR THE SEVEN APPROCHES TO PERFORMANCE EVENTS

ethnography:   a process of writing about a specific place or group of people
deep play:   an intense form of engagement among a group of people
scenario:   sequence or development of events; the process of describing the setting of a particular event
WHERE? WHO? WHEN? TO WHAT EXTENT? WHAT IS GOING ON? WHY? HOW?
Structure Identity Process Ideology Framing Function Experience
Structure (WHERE?):   How is the space organized?   What are its general patterns? What are the informal and  formal “rules” of this sacred space?
Process (WHEN?):   When does this event take place?  How does this event proceed from one moment to the next?  What are we witnessing as we observe this social interaction over time?
Identity (WHO?):   Who are the people involved?  In what ways are they interacting?  What are the “roles” or social identities they are taking on?
Experience (HOW?):   How are the participants experiencing the event?  How are their bodies positioned?  What do you or they see, hear, feel, touch smell, taste (or other senses: temperature, pain, humor, etc.)?
Framing (WHAT IS GOING ON?): How do we know that the participants are really worshipping the “sacred”?  What frames, codes, signals, or other  vernacular  or “local” forms of  metacommunication  are being used throughout the process?
Function (WHY?):   Why are they even participating together at this event?  What immediate purpose or  function does this event serve for its participants?
Ideology (TO WHAT EXTENT?):   What are the broader social meanings of the event?  What are its political and economic implications? What  cultural beliefs and values  does this event uphold or resist?

  • 3. WRITE A 2000-WORD DESCRIPTION
  • 4. OF AT LEAST TWO VERNACULAR FORMS OF THE SACRED
  • 5. 20 POINT BONUS FOR HANDING IN DRAFT (DEPENDING ON EFFORT) ON OR BEFORE OCTOBER 24 (Section B1) or OCTOBER 25 (Section B2) !
  • 6. OPTIONAL: TAKE AT LEAST 10 PHOTOS/VIDEOS TOTAL, 1 PHOTO EVERY 6 MINUTES
  • 7. GROUP OPTION: You may work with other group members, but are still responsible for writing 2000-words (on different “dimensions” or “approaches”).

  • 19. WHERE? WHO? WHEN? TO WHAT EXTENT? WHAT IS GOING ON? WHY? HOW?
  • 20. Structure Identity Process Ideology Framing Function Experience
  • 21. Structure (WHERE?): How is the space organized? What are its general patterns? What are the informal and formal “rules” of this sacred space?
  • 22. Process (WHEN?): When does this event take place? How does this event proceed from one moment to the next? What are we witnessing as we observe this social interaction over time?
  • 23. Identity (WHO?): Who are the people involved? In what ways are they interacting? What are the “roles” or social identities they are taking on?
  • 24. Experience (HOW?): How are the participants experiencing the event? How are their bodies positioned? What do you or they see, hear, feel, touch smell, taste (or other senses: temperature, pain, humor, etc.)?
  • 25. Framing (WHAT IS GOING ON?): How do we know that the participants are really worshipping the “sacred”? What frames, codes, signals, or other vernacular or “local” forms of metacommunication are being used throughout the process?
  • 26. Function (WHY?): Why are they even participating together at this event? What immediate purpose or function does this event serve for its participants?
  • 27. Ideology (TO WHAT EXTENT?): What are the broader social meanings of the event? What are its political and economic implications? What cultural beliefs and values does this event uphold or resist?
