Abstract
In the autobiography, Life and times of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass details his life as a representation of the plight of a slave in the Antebellum South. Literacy, starting in his younger years, held a major significance to Douglass. From being introduced to a book by his initially tender slave mistress in Baltimore, Sophia Auld, to obtaining a copy of The Columbian Orator, literacy became a symbol of hope and freedom for a young Douglass. The Columbian Orator instilled in Douglass the idea that humans had a right to liberty and that slavery was a systematic beast that needed to be eliminated. It was with the assistance of the literacy Douglass obtained that he knew he could no longer stay a slave and that, morally speaking, slavery could not continue to hold a place in American society. This paper will demonstrate the following three themes as it pertains to literacy and slaves like Frederick Douglass: why literacy was important to African Americans as well as how literary materials were obtained and concealed in the Antebellum South; whites’ attitudes towards education and the legislature which made education illegal; how formal education formed an expression of freedom for people of African descent. By exploring these themes, the idea that literacy was something some slaves were encapsulated with and fought to obtain through any means necessary will provide a fundamental understanding one of the various plights slaves preserved through. This will also show how punitive whites were because of their fears that would not even allow slaves to learn how to read for religious purposes yet, strangely, how some slave master used slaves’ thirst for literacy for their own personal gain.

This was a bloody history, the prospect we might regress closer to the days when blacks were brutally lynched without any hope that the murderers would be brought to justice is frightening. This callousness was enabled because many whites in this bygone culture did not see blacks as real people, whites refused to treat blacks with dignity as equals. So, we will try to tell this history with stories showing these blacks and former slaves as real people with dreams, innocent people who truly suffered from many miscarriages of justice.
We will discuss:
• What slavery was like, how whippings and sexual abuse of slaves were common, as white masters could do what they wished with their chattel slaves.
• The experiences of ex-slaves and runaway slaves, including Frederick Douglass, Booker T Washington, and Father Augustine Tolton, and other slave narratives.
• The events that raised tensions between North and South, including the book by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the Supreme Court Dred Scott decision penned by Chief Justice Roger Taney, and the raid on Harper’s Ferry by John Brown.
• How the Lost Cause narrative sought to cast the Civil War as a chivalrous struggle for states’ rights rather than a struggle to preserve slavery.
• How the Cornerstone speech by the Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy, explicitly affirmed that the South fought the Civil War over the issue of slavery from the very beginning.

The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer
Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835, wrote the classic novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer about a mischievous boy growing up in St. Petersburg, Missouri in the 1840s. Tom Sawyer gets punished with the chore of painting a fence on a Saturday after skipping school, but manages to convince other boys to do the work for him by making it seem like a privilege. The book follows Tom's adventures and his growing affection for his friend Becky, but has faced challenges from some who view elements of the story as promoting inappropriate behavior, racism, or other issues.

This was a bloody history, the prospect we might regress closer to the days when blacks were brutally lynched without any hope that the murderers would be brought to justice is frightening. This callousness was enabled because many whites in this bygone culture did not see blacks as real people, whites refused to treat blacks with dignity as equals. So, we will try to tell this history with stories showing these blacks and former slaves as real people with dreams, innocent people who truly suffered from many miscarriages of justice.
We will discuss:
• What slavery was like, how whippings and sexual abuse of slaves were common, as white masters could do what they wished with their chattel slaves.
• The experiences of ex-slaves and runaway slaves, including Frederick Douglass, Booker T Washington, and Father Augustine Tolton, and other slave narratives.
• The events that raised tensions between North and South, including the book by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the Supreme Court Dred Scott decision penned by Chief Justice Roger Taney, and the raid on Harper’s Ferry by John Brown.
• How the Lost Cause narrative sought to cast the Civil War as a chivalrous struggle for states’ rights rather than a struggle to preserve slavery.
• How the Cornerstone speech by the Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy, explicitly affirmed that the South fought the Civil War over the issue of slavery from the very beginning.

The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer
Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835, wrote the classic novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer about a mischievous boy growing up in St. Petersburg, Missouri in the 1840s. Tom Sawyer gets punished with the chore of painting a fence on a Saturday after skipping school, but manages to convince other boys to do the work for him by making it seem like a privilege. The book follows Tom's adventures and his growing affection for his friend Becky, but has faced challenges from some who view elements of the story as promoting inappropriate behavior, racism, or other issues.
