4. Step 1- Topic
Locate the topic – (word or phrase that tells what the text is about)
Examples: Money, Power, Love, Hate, Anger, etc.
5. Step 2 - Purpose
What is the purpose of the text?
Inform? (to give information)
Express (give an opinion)?
To Entertain?
To Influence? (to persuade people to do something or believe something)
6. Step 3 - Sections
Look for important sections of the text or movie
You can summarize each section with the major points in the whole text
7. Remember Summaries are:
Always much short than the text or film
Shorten the text’s or film’s main idea into a few concise sentences
When writing a summary, be sure to record the text’s major ideas
Remember the details are not important, summaries are the bare bones of
the text/film
