A speech about passions, and how our life - and the way we live our passions - has changed through the web.
The New Norm(al): Confronting What Open Means for Higher EducationBonnie Stewart
The opening provocation/keynote for #altc 2017, this talk examines open educational practices for a time of institutional decline & pervasive corporatism & sensationalism. It challenges the idea of norms and normal in the figure - and implied objectivity - of the Bell Curve, and posits instead the figure of the cyborg as a model for openness in fraught but important digital spaces.
The document describes a mobile phone designed for blind users. It uses Braille and gesture-based inputs to allow blind people to make calls, send texts, and access other phone features independently. The phone was tested over multiple sessions, with results showing the gesture-based "NavTap" input method resulted in fewer errors and faster text entry speeds compared to the traditional Braille "MultiTap" method. The goal is to improve the mobile experiences and independence of blind users through accessible technology innovations.
This document discusses data from social media platforms and how it can be analyzed. It contains maps that show the geographic locations of photos posted to Flickr and tweets on Twitter in Taiwan, East Asia, Europe, and worldwide. One map also shows physical travel between locations and communications between users in different places on Twitter, demonstrating how data from social media can provide insight into global travel and communications patterns.

Better Media Plumbing For The Social WebStowe Boyd
Stowe Boyd argues that the current social web architecture needs improvement to better support social interactions and information flow. He advocates for a more decentralized "web of flow" approach that allows information to organically spread through social connections more like blood flows through the body's circulatory system, rather than relying primarily on centralized pages, links, and search functions as in the past. This new approach promises to better reflect how social media and interactions are actually used by people.

This document discusses the distribution of short films. It notes that short films are typically under 5 minutes and can be live action, animated, or a combination. Unlike feature films, short films are usually distributed by independent producers through short film festivals held around the world, online distribution platforms, award winning status which brings attention, and as "pre-sales" to demonstrate an idea and generate interest in developing it into a feature film. Popular short film festivals highlighted include Sundance, Cannes, and Raindance.

Focus on story, don't be seduced by sexy tools: How journalists can create gr...Mirko Lorenz
This is a presentation for journalists and anybody interested in why and how stories can have impact. This is all about on how to find the best form for a strong story.
This is not easy. There are so many options and new tools. The key message of this presentation is that the focus should be on creating the story.
Which calls for an understanding why some stories are strong and lasting, while many are not. Additionally one must understand how the creation process works, which is best done by example and practice (of course).
The original presentation was held as the TASC Storycamp for the finalists of the African Story Challgenge, in Marrakesh, on August 11, 2014.

From Content Strategy to Drupal Site Building - Connecting the dotsRonald Ashri
Content strategy is, undoubtedly, a hot topic these days. A lot is being said that spans the range from concerns regarding the ability to display content on any device to the ability to drive engagement and increase traffic through better content creation and social media strategies. In this presentation we will connect the dots between these issues and practical Drupal site-building concerns with tools that are readily available now.
We will show, through specific examples and references to available modules, how different approaches to content strategy can be practically implemented on Drupal sites. The aim is to equip Drupal site-builders with a handy toolkit that will allow them to both implement a content strategy for their sites as well as better exchange information with content strategists.
The examples will include:
- Different approaches to building content types so as to empower content creators to create a range of different structures.
- Best practices in using vocabularies (fixed, open, user-generated, moderated, etc) or where alternative categorization methods may be relevant.
We will also discuss:
- Editorial calendars and scheduling.
- The true benefit of workflows (and how, sometimes, they can be a disadvantage).
- Analytics and how the ability to measure the effects of any strategy is as important as defining the strategy itself.
Attendees will go away with practical examples and techniques that they can apply to their sites as well as a better understanding of what content strategy really is and how they can use it to improve their sites.
The examples are a result of our own experiences in helping both clients develop their content strategy as well as applying it on italymagazine.com, an in-house product of ours. We grew italymagazine.com to a relevant online digital brand with a strong community by expressing our content strategy ideas through the tools that Drupal 7 made available to us. The resulting ~250% increase in traffic over 3 months is a testament to both the value of a content strategy as well as the power of Drupal to allow you to flexibly and iteratively support it.
From Content Strategy to Drupal Site Building - Connecting the DotsRonald Ashri
The document discusses connecting content strategy to building Drupal sites. It defines content strategy as understanding user and organizational needs to produce and govern content. Successful content strategy allows flexible, findable, and measurable content. Building Drupal sites involves modeling content types and relationships using entities, fields, taxonomies, and modules. Content audits and models are created to meet goals. Content is then produced, published, and measured according to strategy. User engagement must also be considered.

The document proposes adapting the cult classic horror film "Scream" into a short film set in northeast England. Key points include:
- Turning "Scream" into a British adaptation focused on northeast locations, dialogue and characters.
- Filming with friends at classic northeast locations to honor the original plot while adding regional flair.
- Anticipated issues like casting, locations and budget can be overcome with planning and available resources.
- Equipment like cameras, batteries, tripods, costumes and props will be needed to achieve the film's vision. Timelines and college resources allow for completion by the May 2023 deadline.

Development and Deployment: The Human FactorBoris Adryan
Thingmonk 2017: End-to-end IoT solutions are often highly integrated. Even small changes to the UX of a product can have profound impact on hardware requirements, while physical constraints such as battery capacity can dictate software architecture. A holistic understanding of IoT is key to efficient implementation, the “T-shaped engineer” the star in every development team. Contrast this to intellectual silos and matrix organisation, and you may see why especially large companies fail to move quickly into IoT. Similar issues strike the application of IoT. Deploying a solution in the enterprise is just a cost factor if processes are not adjusted to leverage the connected device and its data. However, changes in process often affect companies across their entire organisational structure. This can require a change of mindsets, making the success of an IoT solution depending on the human factor.

Mining Events from Multimedia Streams (WAIS Research group seminar June 2014)Jonathon Hare
The document discusses mining meaningful events and trends from multimedia streams on social media. It describes challenges including dealing with massive amounts of data and making effective use of different modalities. It then presents two case studies: monitoring Twitter's visual pulse by detecting trending images, and detecting social events from a Flickr image collection using features like time, location, text and image similarities between photos. Clustering algorithms are used to group related photos into events. Feature weighting is also explored to determine the most important features for separating events.

Editor's Notes
A script isn’t just the words your actors say. It’s everything that appears on screen. You describe what your audience will see: what text or logos appear, when they appear, what music will be in the background. Start with the written facts and imagine visuals
If this seems overwhelming, remember that this is a small world you are creating. Good PSAs are short 30, 90, 120 seconds. Practice minimalism.
The words you write are not for paper. They will be heard and only then understood. It is worth the extra effort. Read the spoken portion out loud, even if it is to an empty room. Hearing your words out loud helps you gauge their effectiveness. Too many Ses piling up? Try different words. Too much Jargon? Simplify, Do you have to talk really fast to fit them all in? Start cutting.
The average 30-second video was viewed 85% of the way through, while the average 2-minute video was viewed on average 50% of the way through.

If you are wondering where to begin, bear in mind that words take up space in time, they have volume. Knowing, roughly how many words fit into the time you have planned allows you to plan accordingly
Writing for the shoot involves being able to visualize the end product. What are the most important element? The place? Write in an external shot of the location. The speaker? Find a press photo. The Art, get a pan of the Gallery. Imagine what would illustrate the descriptive words the best and then write in what you are confident you can achieve.
Stick to the script and the pay-off comes during the edit. Time wasted in-camera= the heartbreak of scanning through extra shots, multiple takes and superfluous cut aways.
