5. Festivals, Celebrations & The
Gifting Puzzle
Festivals are what life is all about! We look forward to festive occasions and
what they mean to us - re-affirming family ties, renewal of friendships, getting
to know new friends and acquaintances better - and prayers and wishes for a
new life.
Around the corner are festivals and occasions that we all look forward to - from
Dhanteras, to Diwali, and Guru Nanak's Birthday, the Islamic New Year,
Christmas and New Year... And, shortly, the wedding season is starting, too.
Personal celebrations - birthdays, anniversaries - add to the fun and joy of the
Season
How does one give a gift to each person that says you value them - and keep
your budget in place? We'll outline how, in simple steps
6. Does This Happen To You In The
Gifting Season?
We rack our brains for ideas of what to give to our near and dear ones, what
would be suitable corporate gifts. We join the frenzied shopping just before
Diwali, making tiresome runs through crowded streets to malls, markets and
corner bazaars and try to get everything done on time before the deadline.
Sometimes, we just give up and buy something, anything, just to get this
shopping done. And, we know that perhaps our gifts which we've spent time,
money and energy on, are going to end up forgotten in a cupboard in someone's
home.
After all, don’t our own cupboards hold a number of gifts that were given to us,
that we never use?
Sound familiar?
Stressful - and expensive isn't it?
Maybe there's a better way to do this. If this is a challenge for you, here are a
few ways to light a diya in your financial life – and reduce the stress of holiday
shopping
8. How To Select Gifts Wisely
The first mistake that most people make is buying something that they like instead
of thinking about the interests of the person they are buying for. You may have
done this before. You buy a shirt for someone who already has enough. Or, send a
gift basket of Diwali sweets to a diabetic. Or, flowers for a person who is allergic to
them.
It happens more often than you might think. So, take the time to learn about the
interests of that person, even if it's something you don't particularly enjoy. Your
gift will be appreciated and your money will be well spent.
SOME IDEAS
A friend of ours loves reading with her breakfast tea. So we bought her a lovely
tea mug, a couple of paperbacks, some nice cookies and Ceylon tea. We put them
all in a basket and wrapped it up in colored film paper and put a bow on it.
Teenage girls: Nail polish, a CD of their favorite band, a movie ticket, hair brush &
comb set, pens with their names on them, etc.
Another friend is is crazy about motorbikes. We got him a Harley mug, a little die
cast Harley model, some warm gloves and a long scarf. Wrapped it all up in a
basket.
Female co-workers might like candles, bath beads, small figurines, tea towels, a
package of assorted herbal teas, tea cup/coffee mug, a subscription to a magazine
they like, etc
Make a "shopping list" with each individual's name as a heading. Think of what
they really like and try to shop specifically with that in mind.
10. How To Spend Wisely On Gifts
A Practical Way to Manage the Financial Side of Celebrations and the Holiday
Season
The struggle to keep on top of money management, especially during family
celebrations and festivals, is timeless. But, with a little effort and some insights -
you can call a time out on this worrying aspect of life. And settle in to have some
festival fun!
Most people shop at the last minute and give themselves very little time to
think. Perhaps you find yourself in this situation, too. As a result, do you
• Find yourself caught up in endless traffic jams, wasting precious time and
petrol?
• Fall for marketing tricks that stores use – 30% Off, SALE? This is a big magnet
for many people. In reality, the stores are usually selling you goods that are
already way over priced, and taking full advantage of you.
• End up buying something totally inappropriate, because you cannot think of
anything else?
There is a more sensible, rewarding way – on the next page, and it is so simple!
