Weighing the financial considerations of owning and operating a data center facility versus employing a cloud infrastructure requires detailed and careful analysis. In practice, it is not as simple as just measuring potential hardware expense alongside utility pricing for compute and storage resources. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is often the financial metric used to estimate and compare direct and indirect costs of a product or a service. Given the large differences between the two models, it is challenging to perform accurate apples-to-apples cost comparisons between on-premises data centers and cloud infrastructure that is offered as a service. In this session, we explain the economic benefits of deploying applications in AWS over deploying equivalent applications hosted in an on-premises environment.
Disaster Recovery, Continuity of Operations, Backup, and Archive on AWS | AWS...Amazon Web Services
Traditional disaster recovery (DR) has had a spotty record for enterprises. This session compares conventional approaches to DR to those using the AWS cloud and talks about the four ascending levels of AWS DR options and the benefits and tradeoffs among them. The session goes on to discuss backup and restore architectures both using partner products and solutions that assist in backup, recovery, DR, and continuity of operations (COOP).
Backup & Restore Seamlessly with Industry-Leading IntegrationAmazon Web Services

Are your critical applications well architected? Come join this workshop to find out. In this workshop, we perform destructive testing on a reference architecture that is designed to be available 99.99% of the time. This architecture spans availability zones and even regions. We dive deep into how to achieve high availability and in the rare case of disaster, how to fail over to a completely different region. We explain some concepts and implement code to test each layer’s resiliency for simulated loss of Availability Zones, regional service loss, and regional loss. We cover web applications, databases, and storage. Bring your laptop or tablet with your favorite IDE and your AWS account. This workshop requires basic hands-on programming skills. You should be familiar with a programming language like python, java, c#, ruby, powershell or bash.

We heard from data management practitioners and cloud strategists from Amazon Web Services and NuoDB about how organizations are meeting the challenges associated with building new or migrating existing applications to the cloud.
Finally, we discussed how the right cloud-based architecture can:
- Handle rapid user growth by adding new servers on demand
- Provide high performance even in the face of heavy application usage
- Offer around-the-clock resiliency and uptime
- Provide easy and fast access across multiple geographies
- Deliver cloud-enabled apps in public, private, or hybrid cloud environments

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
