Rotary should embrace diversity to grow membership. While women membership has grown, men membership has declined. Embracing diversity means including more women in leadership roles. When organizations do this, they achieve better outcomes and improved business performance. Rotary specifically should work to counter unconscious biases that prevent women from joining and advancing. Doing so would make Rotary more representative of communities and allow it to tackle multifaceted social issues. Events like International Women's Day help introduce more women to Rotary and its mission.

Bob Carter discusses the importance of creating a culture of philanthropy, particularly in Brazil. He argues that while US and Canadian fundraising practices are advanced, charities there have been slow to innovate, and they can learn from countries like Brazil. The key difference between the US and Brazil is that fundraising is viewed as an integral part of achieving community impact in the US, through a culture of philanthropy developed over centuries. For Latin America to strengthen philanthropy, fundraising must be seen as a natural part of community life through culture building within organizations and society.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Profits – Lions Club Wide Bay

▪ State of volunteering in Wide Bay and Australia
▪ Throw a net and catch anyone who is alive!
▪ Push marketing
▪ Pull marketing
3. What is the state of volunteering in Australia?

Australia-Executive-Summary1.pdf
4. Throw a net – why is this not working?
▪ There is a disconnect between roles that people are interested in and roles that
are on offer.
▪ There is misalignment between sectors that volunteers are interested in and
sectors with most need.
▪ What do you think is the most popular volunteering area sought after?
5. Where do people want to serve?
▪ Can we give them what they want? Category
1st popular
Community
service
2nd popular Education
3rd popular
Environment
and
conservation
4th popular
Animal
Welfare
6. What is ‘push and pull marketing’?
Push Marketing
▪ You have a role eg treasurer
▪ You try and convince a person to
take the role eg at AGM
▪ You need to sell the role.
Pull marketing
▪ They tell you what they are looking
for.
▪ You create a role that suits them.
▪ They come to you for a role they are
interested in.
7. So what do future Lion’s volunteers want?
▪ 41% of people in regional areas want to volunteer.
▪ Most of these people want to volunteer in community services field.
▪ They want developmental roles not bureaucracy.
▪ They only want to be out of pocket a little bit.
▪ Create roles to suit the person. Ask them to help out for a day for a cause that
they are interested in – creates relationship and desire for more.
