HOW TO GET THE RECRUITERS ATTENTION
THE EMAIL - SHINE A LIGHT ON YOUR KEY ATTRIBUTES
The first thing you need to do when emailing your application, is ensure that the email
subject line contains the Job Title you are applying for and your Name ie.
“Accountant: Resume of John Smith”
Then familiarise yourself with the content of the advert/job description to ensure you
highlight your matching skills & experience - this should be a brief paragraph, in your
covering email and gives you an opportunity to outline how you fit the job descriptions
expressed criteria. By all means, bullet these points for easier reading & get your punches
in early and grab the reader’s attention. It should also follow these basics:
• Make it no longer than 5 or 6 lines
• Include your matching skills & experience
• Make every word count
• If writing a personal statement, don’t be bland and dull and avoid obvious
statements (“great team player” etc) – BE ORIGINAL!
MATCH YOUR CV TO THE JOB YOU ARE APPLYING FOR
Many people make the mistake of sending out the same, generic CV with every job
application. It does make sense to have a master CV set up (Template), for use as a point
of reference, or in the event that you need to apply for a job at short notice, however,
you should also create a job-specific / tailored version for each role that you apply for.
In your CV, you can elaborate on & highlight the competencies (that you stated in your
covering email) that were developed through your prior work experience and that match
the job description. Make these matching skills stand out – bold, italics etc.
If you find yourself matching each and every criteria, don't hesitate to call the given
company's Human Resources department/contact person and engage them in a
conversation about your matched skills and experience. Almost certainly, the
organisation in question will appreciate your initiative and this should help you stand out
from the many other candidates.
If you are forwarding your cv and not responding to a specific vacancy or advert then
you should research the company and highlight the positions & experience you have that
would suit that particular company / industry.
