6. A 7 Step Process
To Get Deep Work Done

7. Deep work is a term coined by Cal Newport in
the book surprisingly called “Deep Work”.
If you haven’t read the book, you really should.

8. Deep work is the hard, concentrated work you
do to create new value and improve your skills.

9. Most crucially, deep work is
work that is hard to replicate.

10. I look at a habit of being
able to do deep work
as a massive advantage
in doing meaningful work
that has an impact.

11. When you can concentrate
and focus your mind
better than others
for longer than others

12. You will produce higher quality
work than them.

13. This ability will supercharge
your business and career.

14. Maybe you’re already aware
of the value of deep work
and have tried to apply it to your life
and struggled?

15. Do you find your deep work sessions
constantly plagued by interruptions?

16. Do you get frustrated with not being able to
stay focused for longer than a few minutes?

17. Your future rests in your ability do deep work

18. So here are 7 tips to help you
get deep work done.

19. 1. Set small goals

20. In the beginning start small.

21. Aim for 20–30 minutes to begin with.
Less if you have to.

22. Because the last thing
you want to do
is set big targets that
you’re not used to.

23. Ease into it.
Like any habit.

24. 2. Accept that it’s hard work

25. Deep work is, sadly, not fun.

26. It’s hard work.
But very rewarding.

27. If you go in expecting it to be easy
you’ll easily be discouraged.

28. Instead, understand that it’s hard work
(by definition) but it will pay off, big time

29. 3. Brain dump

30. Focus requires an empty mind

31. So if your mind is clogged up
with trying to remember things
you need to do

32. you need a solution.

33. Using a “Getting Things Done” type approach
to information overload will help.

34. Have a master list with EVERY SINGLE TASK
you need to do on it
(separated out into relevant categories like
work, home, relationships etc).

35. Then keep a piece of paper next to you
while you’re doing deep work

36. And any time another thought
comes up,
just jot it down,
so that it doesn’t derail
your thought process.

37. By capturing all your to-do’s and ideas in one
place, and regularly checking it, you:

38. a. Won’t have to keep that stuff in your mind
b. You’ll feel assured that it won’t be lost.

39. 4. Schedule it in

40. If you had a meeting with the boss,
you’d be a fool to miss it.

41. Getting deep work done
should be thought of as
equally as important as
a meeting with the boss.

42. To this end,
it should be scheduled as a
“can’t be broken”
appointment with yourself,
that absolutely has to happen.

43. 5. Set the right time and place

44. You’ll make things a lot easier for yourself if
you schedule in your deep work sessions for
places and times when it’s easier to focus.

45. For instance, if you’re better able to work
between 8 and 10am in the mornings then
schedule in deep work for these times.

46. Similarly, if you work better in a cafe than an
open plan office, then find a way to get deep
work done there.

47. 6. Gradually increase the amounts

48. Starting off with 20–30 minute burst,
have a sliding scale where you gradually
increase the times to 45 minutes
with short breaks in between,
or even longer depending on your work style.

49. 7. Make a longer-term plan

50. Deep work is what differentiates
the average from the exceptional.
This is a VERY important process
and you need to give this
the respect it deserves.

51. This means sitting down and planning out
how you’re going to develop the habit
of deep work over a period of months.

52. The plans should be thorough and specific and take
into account any obstacles or problems that might
interfere with your goals.

53. If you need,
recruit others to help to
keep you accountable.

54. The Results

55. Fast forward a couple of months.
Imagine that you’re getting
3–4 hours of deep work done per day.

56. You’ll be feeling more productive
after every work session.

57. You’ll be getting deeper insights into your
work

58. You’ll be getting more done
and quicker than ever before.

59. You’ll be developing “career capital” that you
can then deploy to create the ideal business
and career on your terms.
