Ethics and IA - seven deadly sins that prevent us from building a better worldEric Reiss
My keynote from World IA Day, 2018
I started working with information architecture long before the term was even known. Over the past 35 years, I’ve encountered many issues that have disturbed me – from creating purposely addictive programs, sites, and apps, to the current zeitgeist for responsive design at the expense of basic usability. I have seen research that is forged, ignored, or twisted by internal company politics and by the cognitive bias of the design team. And I have seen countless dark patterns that serve to suppress accessibility and diversity, and encourage false beliefs and false security.
The Information Age has been marked by data privacy scandals and resulting landmark legislation: the implementation of GDPR, mass data leaks, Cambridge Analytica and numerous hacking incidents have taught governments and global corporate entities that cybersecurity is paramount. How are you protecting the data of your clients, consumers and users? Join this session to update yourself on the latest thinking in the field with expertise from Guy Golan, renowned cyber security and privacy expert and corporate governance specialist. More details to follow.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Steep innovation curve that has changed our lives as social beings and consumers over the last ten yearsNot just more convenient, also more connected and capable of acting as networksBut our experiences as citizens really hasn’t changed or at least citizens of our governmentMany particularly young people think of themselves as citizens of the Internet more than of their own government The gap between this innovation curve in the public sector and the private sector is DANGEROUS…it destroys trust between the people and the institution that is supposed to serve us all
