Spotify has built several real-time pipelines using Apache Storm for use cases like ad targeting, music recommendation, data visualization, and notifications. Each of these real-time pipelines have Apache Storm wired to different systems like Apache Kafka, Apache Cassandra, Apache Zookeeper, and other sources and sinks. In this talk the speaker, Kinshuk Mishra, will share his experiences of scaling Apache Storm pipelines at Spotify. The talk will cover the topics such as Spotify's data architecture, best practices, caching, tuning event sources and sinks, monitoring pipeline health and miscellaneous optimizations to make Apache Storm pipelines more robust.

Real-time streams and logs with Storm and Kafka
Some of the biggest issues at the center of analyzing large amounts of data are query flexibility, latency, and fault tolerance. Modern technologies that build upon the success of “big data” platforms, such as Apache Hadoop, have made it possible to spread the load of data analysis to commodity machines, but these analyses can still take hours to run and do not respond well to rapidly-changing data sets.
A new generation of data processing platforms -- which we call “stream architectures” -- have converted data sources into streams of data that can be processed and analyzed in real-time. This has led to the development of various distributed real-time computation frameworks (e.g. Apache Storm) and multi-consumer data integration technologies (e.g. Apache Kafka). Together, they offer a way to do predictable computation on real-time data streams.
In this talk, we will give an overview of these technologies and how they fit into the Python ecosystem. As part of this presentation, we also released streamparse, a new Python that makes it easy to debug and run large Storm clusters.

Storm enables to tackle real-time data processing challenges the same way Hadoop enables batch processing of Big Data. Storm enables companies to have "Fast Data" alongside with "Big Data". In this meetup, Eugene Dvorkin, Architect @WebMD and NYC Storm User Group organizer will teach Apache Storm and Stream Processing fundamentals. While this meeting is geared toward new Storm users, experienced users may find something interesting as well.

At Integral, we process heavy volumes of click-stream traffic. 50K QPS of ad impressions at peak and close to 200K QPS of all browser calls. We build analytics on this streams of data. There are two applications which require quite significant computational effort: 'sessionization' and fraud detection.
Sessionization implies linking a series of requests from same browser into single record. There can be 5 or more total requests spread over 15-30 minutes which we need to link to each other.
Fraud detection is a process looking at various signals in browser requests and at substantial historical evidence data classifying ad impression either as legitimate or as fraudulent.
We've been doing both (as well as all other analytics) in batch mode once an hour at best. Both processes, and, in particular, fraud detection, are time sensitive and much more meaningful if done in near-real-time.
This talk would be about our experience migrating a once-per-day offline batch processing of impression data using hadoop to in-memory stream processing using Kafka, Storm and Cassandra. We will touch upon our choices and our reasoning for selecting the products used for this solution.
Hadoop is no longer the only or always preferred option in Big Data space. In-memory stream processing may be more effective for time series data preparation and aggregation. Ability to scale at a significantly lower cost means more customers, better accuracy and better business practices: since only in-stream processing allows for low-latency data and insight delivery it opens entirely new opportunities. However, transitioning of non-trivial data pipelines raises a number of questions hidden previously within the offline nature of batch processing. How will you join several data feeds? How will you implement failure recovery? In addition to handling terabytes of data per day our streaming system has to be guided by the following considerations:
• Recovery time
• Time relativity and continuity
• Geographical distribution of data sources
• Limit on data loss
• Maintainability
The system produces complex cross-correlational analysis of several data feeds and aggregation for client analytics with input feed frequency of up to 100K msg/sec.
This presentation will benefit anyone interested in learning an alternate approach for big data analytics, especially the process of joining multiple streams in memory using Cassandra. Presentation will also highlight certain optimization patterns used those can be useful in similar situations.

This talk provides an overview of the open source Storm system for processing Big Data in realtime. The talk starts with an overview of the technology, including key components: Nimbus, Zookeeper, Topology, Tuple, Trident. It looks at integration with Hadoop through YARN and recent improvements. The presentation then dives into the complex Big Data architecture in which Storm can be integrated . The result is a compelling stack of technologies including integrated Hadoop clusters, MPP, and NoSQL databases.
After this, we look at example use cases for Storm: real-time advertising statistics, updating a Machine Learned model for content popularity predictions, and financial compliance monitoring.
1 Million Writes per second on 60 nodes with Cassandra and EBS
EBS has long been taboo in the Cassandra world for high performance workloads. That line of thinking has started to change with the introduction of EBS GP2 and the recent stability improvements made by the EBS team, which is why we have multiple PetaBytes of data relying on EBS every day. Running Cassandra on EBS will now let you run denser, cheaper Cassandra clusters with just as much availability as ephemeral storage instances. This talk will walk through a highly detailed use case and configuration guide for a multi PetaByte, million write per second cluster that needs to be highly performant and cost efficient. We will dive into the instance type choices, configuration and low level tuning that allowed us to hit 1.3 million writes per second with a replication factor of 3 on just 60 nodes. We will go into the details of why we chose to use the latest DateTieredCompactionStrategy and why that's a perfect fit for high volume time series workloads.

Engaging users in real-time is the topic of our times. Whether it’s a game, a shop, or a content-network, the aim remains the same: providing a personalized experience. In this workshop we will look under the hood of Apache Storm and lay a firm foundation on how to use it with PHP. By that, you can leverage your existing codebase and PHP expertise for an entirely new world: real-time analytics and business logic working on message streams. During the course of the workshop, we will introduce Apache Storm and take a look at all of its components. We will then skyrocket the applicability of Storm by showing you how to implement their components with PHP. Storm-on-YARN: Convergence of Low-Latency and Big-Data
adoop plays a central role for Yahoo! to provide personalized experiences for our users and create value for our advertisers. In this talk, we will discuss the convergence of low-latency processing and Hadoop platform. To enable the convergence, we have developed Storm-on-YARN to enable Storm streaming/microbatch applications and Hadoop batch applications hosted in a single cluster. Storm applications could leverage YARN for resource management, and apply Hadoop style security to Hadoop datasets on HDFS and HBase. In Storm-on-YARN, YARN is used to launch Storm application master (Nimbus), and enable Nimbus to request resources for Storm workers (Supervisors). YARN resource manager and Storm scheduler work together to support multi-tenancy and high availability. HDFS enables Storm to achieve higher availability of Nimbus itself. We are introducing Hadoop style security into Storm through JAAS authentication (Kerberos and Digest). Storm servers (Nimbus and DRPC) will be configured with authorization plugins for access control and audit. The security context enables Storm applications to access authorized datasets only (including those created by Hadoop applications). Yahoo! is making our contribution on Storm and YARN available as open source. We will work with industry partners to foster the convergence of low-latency processing and big-data.

Go90 is a mobile entertainment platform offering access to live and on demand videos. We built the web services platform and social features like activity feed for go90 by making heavy use of Cassandra and Scala, and would like to share what we learned during development and while operating go90. In this presentation, we cover our data model evolution from the initial prototypes to the current production version and the significant performance gain by using a better data model. We will explain how we apply time series data modeling and the benefits of using expiring columns with DateTieredCompactionStrategy. We will also talk about interesting experiences related to table modifications, tombstones and table pagination. On the operations side, we will discuss our findings on java driver usage, performance, monitoring, cluster maintenance, version upgrade, 2-way ssl and many more. We built the web services platform and social features like activity feed for go90 by making heavy use of Cassandra and Scala, and would like to share what we learned during development and while operating go90. In this presentation, we cover our data model evolution from the initial prototypes to the current production version and the significant performance gain by using a better data model. We will explain how we apply time series data modeling and the benefits of using expiring columns with DateTieredCompactionStrategy. We will also talk about interesting experiences related to table modifications, tombstones and table pagination. On the operations side, we will discuss our findings on java driver usage, performance, monitoring, cluster maintenance, version upgrade, 2-way ssl and many more. We hope you can learn from our mistakes instead of making them yourself!

Kubernetes is fast becoming the platform of choice for running distributed, containerized applications in the cloud. It has great features for availability, scalability, monitoring, ease of deployment, a rich set of tools and an extremely fast-growing ecosystem that is making it ever more useful. However, running stateful applications such as Kafka on Kubernetes is not a common practice today. At Intuit, we took an experimentation and data-driven approach for evaluating Kafka on Kubernetes in AWS.
In this talk, we will provide details of our functional and non-functional requirements, the experimental configuration and the details of the evaluation. The evaluation process included functional tests for producing/consuming messages, network isolation tests, cross-region tests as well as performance and stress tests. We will focus on the problems we ran into and how we addressed them. This talk will demonstrate a Kubernetes cluster running Kafka along with the details of how each component is configured. Specifically, we will cover the Kafka and ZooKeeper StatefulSets, the ConfigMaps used for storing the server.properties used by all brokers, the service objects for enabling access to the brokers, securing the data and, last but not least, integration with Splunk and Wavefront for logging and monitoring respectively.

Recently, the interest in highly scalable stream processing engines has risen, thus many projects have appeared. Apache Samza is a distributed stream-processing framework that uses Apache Kafka for messaging, and Apache Hadoop YARN to provide fault tolerance, and resource management. It is one of the most popular stream processing engines out there used by many high-profile companies. On the other hand, we have Amazon Kinesis that is a fully managed service for real-time processing of streaming data which allows users to scale the amount of data ingested by Kinesis without worrying about the infrastructure details. This presentation gives a brief introduction about the very popular Samza-Kafka integration, then focuses on the new Samza-Kinesis integration, and explains users the new opportunities they have due to the new Samza-Kinesis integration.

As the engineering teams at Squarespace grow, we have been building more and more microservices. However, this has added operational strain as we try to shoehorn a growing, complex dynamic environment into our static data center infrastructure. We needed to rethink how we handle deployments, dependency management, resource allocation, monitoring, and alerting. Docker containerization and Kubernetes orchestration helps us tackle many of these problems, but the journey has been challenging. In this talk, we’ll discuss the challenges of running Kubernetes in a datacenter and how we switched to a more SLA-focused alert structure than per instance health with Prometheus and AlertManager.
The Impact of Hardware and Software Version Changes on Apache Kafka Performan...
Apache Kafka's performance and scalability can be impacted by both hardware and software dimensions. In this presentation, we explore two recent experiences from running a managed Kafka service.
The first example recounts our experiences with running Kafka on AWS's Graviton2 (ARM) instances. We performed extensive benchmarking but didn't initially see the expected performance benefits. We developed multiple hypotheses to explain the unrealized performance improvement, but we could not experimentally determine the cause. We then profiled the Kafka application, and after identifying and confirming a likely cause, we found a workaround and obtained the hoped-for improved price/performance.
The second example explores the ability of Kafka to scale with increasing partitions. We revisit our previous benchmarking experiments with the newest version of Kafka (3.X), which has the option to replace Zookeeper with the new KRaft protocol. We test the theory that Kafka with KRaft can 'scale to millions of partitions' and also provide valuable experimental feedback on how close KRaft is to being production-ready.

This year we'll talk about the joys of the HBase Fuzzy Row Filter, new TSDB filters, expression support, Graphite functions and running OpenTSDB on top of Google’s hosted Bigtable. AsyncHBase now includes per-RPC timeouts, append support, Kerberos auth, and a beta implementation in Go.
Event processing without breaking production
Transactional systems are built with the primary focus of processing many concurrent events, only keeping the current state of data. What if I told you there was a way to capture all the events that led to that current state? Capturing all events would allow for deeper analytics/machine learning, debugging, auditing, and more all without affecting your production systems. In this talk we will explore the architecture, tools and patterns used to do just that. Before leaving this talk you will also learn about the stumbling blocks we ran into while implementing this against a temperamental legacy application.
