How NGOs Help Society In a developing nation that is yet to gain its title of a “developed nation”, there are organizations like NGOs that help the development process at a very basic level – the societal level. The term NGO stands for Non-Governmental Organization. These organizations do not work for profit, rather for the development of the society at the roots. The concept of NGOs took birth after the World War II, when many such organizations were born for the sake of helping the people of war-torn nations in the process of rehabilitation. Ever since then, these organizations have become the backbone which helps the society wherever help is needed. NGOs in India are progressively becoming more and more better-structured and deliverables-oriented. India is a developing nation, with very varied levels of education and quality of demographics. Some of the best NGOs in India focus on the basic tools a human needs in order to live a content life, like education, work opportunities, equality and rights by law. These tool are more important than anything else to assist overall development of a nation. Development is meaningful only if the people are ready to accept it and sustain it like it was their own responsibility. In most developing countries, there is a degree of aloofness seen in the people which prevents the inculcation of belongingness towards their surroundings. People fail to understand that whatever surrounds them is a part of their lives and thus they hold a duty towards is preservation and betterment. This trait is better recognized in countries that are developed and have a high education rate. In developing countries, this is where NGOs step in. They make people aware of this fact through practical examples and seminars, thus raising the level of society-conscience. In the developmental efforts of a nation, this education proves to be the spine. An example of this can be seen in the sector of infrastructure. A bus-stop has metal chairs attached to the ground for people to be able to sit while waiting for the bus. In a developed nation, the people using the bus-stop are more likely to recognize this infrastructure as “for the society” and preserve it. In a developing nation, however, the common thought process will go like “this does not belong to me” – this point of view encourages theft and vandalism. It is this very thinking of people that needs to be changed before a country can think of moving forward in the timeline. NGOs help by creating awareness and establishing a sense of good behavior in the minds of the community people so that actual development efforts become sustainable. When the public of a country understands its responsibilities well and carries them out, assured all-round development is seen. In countries like Germany, where the Human Development Index is extremely high, the development in all aspects is also highly speedy and sustained. This is the difference. NGOs are needed in order to carry out developmental and alleviation activities at a “people” level. However, it is not necessary that NGOs are all about socio-economy.
