- 1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
- 2. David Foster • David Foster is the killer and with his character we tried to represent young teenagers who go through something at a young age and as an end result end up killing. • An example from a mainstream film that can relate to this is ‘Carrie’. This is because at her teenage years she was getting bullied but then ended up killing students in her school as revenge because of what she went through.
- 3. How are teenagers represented in the media? • In the media teenagers are categorised into particular groups such as the nerds , the popular teens, the sporty teens and the emo’s etc. • We decided to use a male protagonist who is dealing with schizophrenia. Having a male protagonist can be seen as a thriller convention, this is because it has been used in successful thrillers such as ‘identity’ and ‘seven’.
- 4. How we portrayed our character • In the beginning of our film you see a female victim who was killed by David Foster the teenage boy dealing with schizophrenia. You also see a scrap book that he created. As the film plays you hear his voice in the background speaking to a detective which doesn’t get revealed till the end. This allows the audience to see what is going on his mind, also knowing that he is has schizophrenia enables the audience to be more lenient with him feeling some emotion towards his actions.
- 5. Camera • We used lots of different camera techniques to represent the victim killed by David Foster as well as himself. This is an establishing shot which shows the victim on the phone just like a normal teenager would. It shows the audience where she was and what she was doing before she got killed. It also allows the audience to feel sympathy and pity as this particular shot dominates her innocence. This is a mid shot which shows the killer placed more in the foreground of the frame. This shows the audience how he feels no remorse towards his actions as he feels that God told him to. The audience would then realise his actions are because of his illness which allows the audience to feel sympathy and lenience towards him.
- 6. Mise en scene Codes of clothing The victim is seen wearing white which represents her purity and innocence. This shows the audience that she is an innocent teen. Codes of clothing The killer is wearing black which represents him being dangerous and evil. This shows the audience that he is the complete opposite from innocent and connotes danger.
