This document discusses social groups and how they were represented in a thriller film. It describes two main social groups: male villains and female victims. The villain is presented as obsessive, violent, and selfish. He murders his ex-girlfriend out of obsession. The victim is innocent, unsuspecting, and frightened. Her character is based on victims from other films to portray vulnerability. Both characters are presented through costume, lighting, camera shots and other techniques to effectively portray their social roles in the thriller genre.

Social Group: A group of people who interact with each other and are aware
of having something in common.

3. OUR GROUPS
In our thriller opening, we represented two different social groups. These
were:

4. VILLAIN
Key Character Traits of Our Villain:
• Obsessive
• Violent
• Selfish
The villain of our film is a selfish and obsessive male who is still in love
with his ex-girlfriend. He is an angry character who wants to have her all to
himself. After realising he cannot have what he wants, he turns to violence
and murders his ex-girlfriend.

5. SOCIAL GROUP - VILLAINS
Our villain is presented in two different ways. He is first introduced as mysterious,
obsessive and psychotic. This is mirrored in the film ‘Se7en’. Both our film and se7en
introduce the villain through a close up shot which has been framed so that only the
villains hands can be seen. It also focuses on their obsessive side through their
actions. Both villains are creating scrapbooks and cutting and drawing on
photographs which makes them appear psychotic. Mise en scene elements of the
props of the photographs enhance this as well as the lighting. Both shots here have
quite dim lighting and are relatively dark which reflect the dark character trait of the
work. The lack of detail and focus on the character in these first shots of them is what
gives the audience the mysterious feel and makes them feel uncertain. We edited this
section similarly to se7en too with sharp erratic cuts to reflect his unstable mind. This
was teamed with a unnatural score which made the audience feel uneasy about the
character. This was taken from inspiration from Se7en which has a score which
reflects the villains mind.

6. SOCIAL GROUP - VILLAINS
The villain is then presented wearing black clothes with his hood up. This gives connotations of
death and mystery which are qualities associated with typical villains. The hood adds to this effect
as it adds an element of being hidden and secretive about his actions, which is how the character of
Kurtis is. He has been plotting this murder secretly for such a long time and so his costume needed
to reflect this. This is similarly portrayed through the villain in Face Off- Caster Troye. He also wears
dark clothing although his is a lot smarter. We chose not to make our villain to wear a suit because
he is meant to portray a younger type of character and be a lot more realistic than the narrative in
face off which is very exaggerated. As the two mid/long shots show below, both characters are
holding the prop of a gun which is a convention of a thriller. This again shows the type of person
that they are and that they are associated with violence which helps to represent the social group of
the villain. We based our villain on the Face off villain to ensure that when he showed no remorse
when killing people. Both characters appear careless of their actions which is another villainous
quality. In the final scene we used a close up shot of Kurtis’ face in order to show the lack of
expression clearly.

7. VICTIM
Key Character Traits of Our Victim:
• Unsuspecting
• Innocent
• Frightened
The victim of our film is an innocent character who is unsuspecting of her
fate. She used to be with the villain but 3 years after their split she has
moved on. She ignores his calls and texts at all costs and has no idea that
he has been watching her and planning her murder.

8. SOCIAL GROUP - VICTIMS
The victim/love interest in our film is firstly presented as confident and unsuspecting. This
is shown through a series of long shots as which show her walking confidently. We
have also presented her innocence as well as the idea that she has been to work. We
used the mise en scene element of costume to portray this. We dressed her in a smart
white shirt and black trousers to show this and ensured that she looked ordinary as to
keep her as unsuspecting. We also ensured that she wore white to reinforce her
innocence. This is reflected similarly in taken, as the victim is also dressed in very plain
clothes to reflect her normality and the lack of knowledge of the events that are about to
take place. As Alex (our victim) discovers the photo frame on the floor, the realisation
sets in that something is not right. We portray her through a high-angle shot to make her
look weak, innocent and to represent her as the victim. These shot types are also used
throughout Taken. Close up shots were used during the bedroom scene to ensure that
facial expressions were clear as this shows the key trait of being frightened. We decided
to base our victim on the Taken victim and have her as a young female to make her
appear more vulnerable .
