How different theories explain
human differences
A snake in the garden
Ali’s reaction.
Shawn’s response
Peter’s retaliation
Six Personality Perspectives
The six personality theories are psychodynamic,
behaviorism, humanism, biological, traits and
social cognitive schools of thoughts.
Let us use the six personality perspectives to
explore the differences in responding to a
snake in the garden by Ali, Shawn and Peter
Psychodynamic theories
Ali panicked could be triggered by the
subconscious mind. He could have been bitten
by a snake in the past.
Shawn is comfortable with the snake because he
could have kept a snake as a pet in his childhood
days. It explains why he is happily playing with
the snake.
Psychodynamic theories
Peter on seeing a snake took a knife and killed
It. His action could be triggered from his loss of
a good friend bitten by a poisonous snake
depressed in his unconscious mind.
Behaviourist theories
Ali panicked because he could see with his own
eyes how a snake attacked his friends and
landed up in hospital for a few days. He has
learned from that incident that snake is
dangerous.
Shawn is playing with the snake because he
has recognized that the snake in the garden is
harmless and not dangerous.
Behaviorist theories
Peter has recognized the same type of snake
killing his friend. Without hesitation
he took a knife and kill it.
Humanistic theories
Ali panicked because of his survival instinct.
Shawn loves snakes. It explain why he is happily
playing with it. Peter killed the snake to protect
others from harm.
Biological and evolutionary theories
Ali panicked because of he has inherited a
cowardly gene from a member of the family of
his ancestors. Shawn has inherited a playful
and altruism gene. It explain why
Shawn loves snakes. Peter inherited an
aggressive gene. Upon seeing the snake he
becomes violent and kill it.
Trait theories
The traits theorist uses adjectives to describe
Ali, Shawn and Peter responses to the snake.
In this incident the traits theorists will
Describe Ali as faint-hearted and cowardly,
Shawn as playful and adventurous and Peter as
cruel and violent.
Social Cognitive Theories
Ali, Shawn and Peter reactions could be different
as they have choices to response to a snake.
Upon seeing the snake in the garden, they
would use their cognitive abilities to generate
alternatives, analyze, predict and anticipate the
consequences of each alternative before they
response or react to
the snake.
Conclusion.
In conclusion, there is a need to integrate the six
schools of personality perspectives via
psychodynamic, behaviorism, humanism,
biological, traits and cognitive approaches to
explain not only the what we do but also why
we behave the way we do thus enabling us to
interpret human differences more
comprehensively, objectively
and accurately.
