Primavera Project Manager is used extensively in education sector. The Los Angeles Unified School District has a New Facilities Group that manages the construction of 350 schools and to manage these project schedules, they use Primavera Project Manager. But they are also required to create monthly baselines, which is a tedious and time-consuming process. This is where Calance was brought in – to create an application that helped simplify project scheduling and creation, deletion, and assigning of baselines. Find out how Calance addressed the key issue and saved an enormous amount of time. Calance is an industry leader in Information Technology, a CMMI level 5 company serving customers since decades. Overview
The Los Angeles Unified School
District (LAUSD) was founded in
1853. LAUSD, the second largest
school district in the nation,
enrolls more than 640,000
students in kindergarten through
12th grade, at over 900 schools,
and 187 public charter schools.
The boundaries spread over 720
square miles and include the
mega-city of Los Angeles as well
as all or parts of 31 smaller
municipalities plus several
unincorporated sections of
Southern California.
Challenges
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is one of the largest school
districts in the nation. The New Facilities group manages the construction of
over 350 schools, and needed to manage these projects in an accurate and
timely manner.
They use Primavera Project Manager (P6) to manage project schedules, and
are required to create monthly project baselines. These baselines must be
named, then assigned to all users in a consistent manner. While this is
possible to do in P6, it can be challenging to create many baselines at once,
and users must be out of the system during the baseline creation process.
LAUSD also found that when creating such high volumes of baselines, it is
necessary to be able to delete older baselines in batches.
Our Solution
Calance was brought in to create an application that allows LAUSD to
manage the baselines. We created a set of web-based tools that let users
create baselines for multiple projects quickly and easily. The application also
allows them to assign user and project-level baselines, and to select and
delete baselines. The application is simple to use, incorporates P6 security
settings and greatly reduces the time that users must be out of the system.
Results
The application has saved LAUSD an enormous amount of time. For example,
the process of creating baselines once took four hours of tedious typing. Now
it happens in under 15 minutes. Furthermore, baselines are automatically and
consistently named, and it is easy to make sure that baselines are assigned
properly. Scheduling projects is no longer a daunting task; managers are now
able to focus their time and efforts on project delivery.
