Hot Fuzz Analysis
At the beginning of hot fuzz we automatically see an establishishing/wide shot of the main
character walking towards the camera in a dark room, this would be because the director
would be trying to conceal the characters face until he’s very close to the camera. He then
holds up his police badge giving us a clue as to the identity of our main character. His face
and the face on his badge are very stern suggesting that he’s a very serious person and takes
his job very seriously. The next shot is of his feet on a shinny white floor suggesting that he
works in a very well looked after and formal area. The shot changes to his face and he still
has a very serious look on his face backing up my point from before. There is a voice over
over the top of the shots giving us further detail into who the character is and his traits. The
shots change quite quickly and different shots are lighter and darker depending on the
amount of danger Nick (main character) is in. Each area shown there is always at least on
close up of his face and he is always wearing his uniform showing he is proud of his
achievements. The final shot in the montage shows nick being stabbed be santa. This would
have been done for comedic purposes but santas red coat could show his evil. After the
montage, it cuts back to the police head quarters which shows the formality again.
The first shot is an establishing/ wide shot of the main character to give us an idea of the
setting and the person. After there is a shot of his feet walking and then a high angle shot of
his face showing power. There are then a few shots of his uniform to re-enforce the fact
that he is a police officer so he is the hero. There it then leads into a montage of what he
has achieved before present day to give us a quick over view of the characters past.
The first scene is of the main character walking. The only thing you can hear is his footsteps
to make you wonder who he is. It then proceeds to a voice over which talks about the
characters past. At this point the music also starts to go with the montage. The music is
asynchronous, the majority of the sound in the opening sequence is non-diegetic.
The opening sequence is mainly a montage of the main characters life through his training
and his early career and the transitions between each individual shot were very quick to
keep the pace going. From the first shot to the second, it is a graphic cut to the montage.
The editor would have changed the lighting on specific shots indicating the level of danger
nick is in for example when they are showing him as part of a swat team, he’s clearly in
danger.
