Our trailer
By molly and rose
A Level Media
Genre
Our genre for the trailer will be a horror. We chose to do a horror due to horror being our favourite genre and
a genre we’ve watched a lot of films on. Also, when we originally got given the task to make this trailer a
horror themed trailer was the first idea to come to mind.
Also, choosing this theme will be a lot of fun, we get to promote ideas that we may wouldn't have been able to,
with a different genre. For example, we can use selected shades of high and low key lighting, we also have an
excuse to use editing such as shadowing effects, black and white etc. all these factors help to sell our trailer
more. However, we do know that not a great, deal of the overall population will like watching this genre, but we
are taking a risk, taking the opportunity to offer the population an idea as a way of exploiting our conventions.
Saying this, a lot of people do enjoy the genre of ‘horror’, they like watching new, trailers for shockingly, new
surprises etc. this therefore gives us a chance to promote our scares and jumps to the camera.
are we revealinG tOO
much?
During the time period of our trailer, we will be leaving our viewers on a cliff
hanger as to what will happen to the students, and make people ask questions
such as:
1)Will the students survive?
2)Is the witch real?
3)What will happen next?
We are of course showing dramatic scenes in our trailer, scenes that will help to
build up the tension of the film itself; we don’t want to leave too many, shocking
scenes to be left behind, but we also, don’t want to give too much shocking,
revealing parts of the trailer away. In terms of credits, and any extra, starting or
ending parts to our trailer, we are beginning with some text, explaining to the
audience what is happening, such as: “A group of teenagers went out into the…”
Storyline
We are going to base our trailer on The Blair Witch Project, this is a trailer we’ve both enjoyed watching and
have took much inspiration from. Its going to be a real life event of a group of young curious teens who go out
exploring in the woods and discover a creature in the woods.
We are going to do our own take on the film itself; this will help to challenge our conventions with the typical,
expected ‘Horror’ ones. The storyline of our trailer, is going to be so, very alike to the actual, main film ‘Blare
Witch Project’ itself as we enjoy the conventions and essentially, the ‘Mise En Scene’. This includes factors such
as:
1)Hair and Make-up
2)Costume
3)Lighting
4)Performance
5)Body language
Why We choSe our caSt
We chose our class as the age range, match in and associate with our target audiences ages. As we are aiming
our trailer at the age range of (16-20), we believe that our cast will help to promote the trailer itself; this is
mainly due to the relation between the audience and the cast.
The main, style and ‘Mise En Scene’ (costume wise) for our cast will be conveyed upon as typical young adults
and we will compare this to the real world of young adults. Examples are jeans, an outdoors jacket, typical guys
with short hair, the main girl being your ordinary teenager with long hair, doesn’t dress too outgoing etc. we
believe that a great, variety of teenagers will be able to relate to our cast.
In terms of choosing our cast, we did not undertake in any market research, we already knew who we was
going to pick, to best suit the roles of our cast. We did however, take into consideration their style, and whether
or not they were reliable enough and well committed for the job throughout the whole time period of our trailer.
We have laid down terms and conditions with them.
target audience
Our target audience is going to be teens the same age of the cast in are trailer and also to typical horror film
lovers. So roughly it'll be for 16-20 year olds.
Our age rating is going to be 15, so therefore we can target our target for 16 year olds. Also, our trailer will
involve conventions that are not suitable for a younger audience, this too, helps to convey across our genre of:
‘Horror’.
Location
Our location from our trailer is going to be set at a local woods in Heacham. This location will match our genre
of horror due to it having the typical horror stereotype.
We chose this particular location, due to the visualisation and the typical conventions of a ‘Horror’ themed,
setting. This helps to influence and exaggerate the theme itself, as the location is narrow and tight. Fitting what
people will typically expect the location to look like.
cast
The cast for our project will be friends of ours on a Media course, so all these people will have good
experience and knowledge of acting. We will be needing 3 main characters and a few others to interview like
in The Blair Witch Project itself. Our extras, will be people that we will be asking questions to, during and
within the actual filming. There will be a range of different ages for the purpose relating to our audience,
which may attract more audiences in order to not aim specifically at one, particular audience. This will help
to diversify the acting within our trailer.
The equipment, also relates to our cast. For example, we will need to be using sleeping bags, and big heavy,
styled camping gear. This also, fits in with our setting and theme of a camping styled event. Whereas if we
didn’t dress our actors as though they were going out on a camping trip, people may get confused and this
therefore will not combine together as a plot correctly.
typicaL conventions of
‘Horror’
Camera angles/movement: Low angle, High angle, Extreme close up, Extreme long shot, Point of view shots, tilt,
pan, arc, push in pull out, close up.
Lighting: Profile, Under lighting, Low key, Back lighting.
Sound: Eerie/Scary music, stabs, ambient, contrapuntal, demonic laughs, nursery rhymes, incidental music,
sinister music.
Editing: Long takes to build up fear and suspense, sharp cuts, fades, graphic matches.
We want to create, a unique, trailer involving typical conventions of ‘Horror’ to help sell the genre itself, not
giving people completely what they expect, as we want it to be unique and different, but we also would like the
genre to be noticed.

Saying this, a lot of people do enjoy the genre of ‘horror’, they like watching new, trailers for shockingly, new surprises etc. this therefore gives us a chance to promote our scares and jumps to the camera.

We are going to do our own take on the film itself; this will help to challenge our conventions with the typical, expected ‘Horror’ ones. This includes factors such as: 1)Hair and Make-up 2)Costume 3)Lighting 4)Performance 5)Body language
  • 5. Why We choSe our caSt We chose our class as the age range, match in and associate with our target audiences ages. As we are aiming our trailer at the age range of (16-20), we believe that our cast will help to promote the trailer itself; this is mainly due to the relation between the audience and the cast. The main, style and ‘Mise En Scene’ (costume wise) for our cast will be conveyed upon as typical young adults and we will compare this to the real world of young adults. Examples are jeans, an outdoors jacket, typical guys with short hair, the main girl being your ordinary teenager with long hair, doesn’t dress too outgoing etc. we believe that a great, variety of teenagers will be able to relate to our cast. In terms of choosing our cast, we did not undertake in any market research, we already knew who we was going to pick, to best suit the roles of our cast. We did however, take into consideration their style, and whether or not they were reliable enough and well committed for the job throughout the whole time period of our trailer. We have laid down terms and conditions with them.
  • 6. target audience Our target audience is going to be teens the same age of the cast in are trailer and also to typical horror film lovers. So roughly it'll be for 16-20 year olds. Our age rating is going to be 15, so therefore we can target our target for 16 year olds. Also, our trailer will involve conventions that are not suitable for a younger audience, this too, helps to convey across our genre of: ‘Horror’.
  • 7. Location Our location from our trailer is going to be set at a local woods in Heacham. This location will match our genre of horror due to it having the typical horror stereotype. We chose this particular location, due to the visualisation and the typical conventions of a ‘Horror’ themed, setting. This helps to influence and exaggerate the theme itself, as the location is narrow and tight. Fitting what people will typically expect the location to look like.
  • 8. cast The cast for our project will be friends of ours on a Media course, so all these people will have good experience and knowledge of acting. We will be needing 3 main characters and a few others to interview like in The Blair Witch Project itself. Our extras, will be people that we will be asking questions to, during and within the actual filming. There will be a range of different ages for the purpose relating to our audience, which may attract more audiences in order to not aim specifically at one, particular audience. This will help to diversify the acting within our trailer. The equipment, also relates to our cast. For example, we will need to be using sleeping bags, and big heavy, styled camping gear. This also, fits in with our setting and theme of a camping styled event. Whereas if we didn’t dress our actors as though they were going out on a camping trip, people may get confused and this therefore will not combine together as a plot correctly.
  • 9. typicaL conventions of ‘Horror’ Camera angles/movement: Low angle, High angle, Extreme close up, Extreme long shot, Point of view shots, tilt, pan, arc, push in pull out, close up. Lighting: Profile, Under lighting, Low key, Back lighting. Sound: Eerie/Scary music, stabs, ambient, contrapuntal, demonic laughs, nursery rhymes, incidental music, sinister music. Editing: Long takes to build up fear and suspense, sharp cuts, fades, graphic matches. We want to create, a unique, trailer involving typical conventions of ‘Horror’ to help sell the genre itself, not giving people completely what they expect, as we want it to be unique and different, but we also would like the genre to be noticed.
