In the modern age, the term was used by a Dutch scholar of
Turkish society, Anne Nauta in 1978.Nauta sought a term that could be used
to distinguish honor killing from blood feuds. According to Nauta:

social group by other members, due to the belief the victim has brought dishonor
upon the family or community.”

HONOR KILLING IN PAKISTAN:
There were approximately 1,096 cases of honor killing in the country last years,
representing a 39% increase between 2010 & 2015.
In 2010, approximately 800 cases were reporting in the
country other than those which were not reporting.
In 2011, these cases would less up to 200 and recorded
cases were 600.
In 2012, honor killing increased up to 900.
Then, in 2014 this amount is continuous up to 950.
But in 2015 and 2016, the murders rate on honor killing
is more and more, Women protection bill 2016 shows
That 1,261 womens killed in Pakistan every year.
REASONS BEHIND HONOR KILLING
Marrying to person outside the caste or religion.
Desire for divorce even from an abusive husband.
Disobeying the dress code given by the community
to the female.
Adultery
Refusing arranged marriage.
Promiscuity
For asserting independence.
Huge caste base discriminations and stratification
of the society.

of women in society. In these traditionally male-dominated societies women are
dependent first on their father and then on their husband, women are viewed as property
and not as individuals with their own agency.
FACTORS LEADING TO RISE IN HONOR KILLING
There are many factors which leading to rise in honor killings.
Political support to the murderer
Gender discrimination
No strict punishment
Persons who killed the victims in their honor
are almost never punished.
In rare case they are brought on trial for
serving only for three months in prison at
most moreover most of them are let of.
LAW IN PAKISTAN
• The Hudood Ordinances of Pakistan, enacted in 1979 by ruler General Zia-ul-Haq
that realigned Pakistani rule with Islamic Law. The law had the effect of reducing
the legal protections for women. Women who made accusations of rape, after
this law, were required to provide four male witnesses. If unable to do this, the
alleged case could not be prosecuted in the courts.
• On 8 December 2004, under international and domestic pressure, Pakistan enacted a law
that made honor killings punishable by a prison term of 7 years or by the death penalty in
the most extreme cases.
• In 2006, the Womens protection Bill amended these hudood ordinances by removing
four male witnesses.
• In 2016, Pakistan repealed the law which allowed the murder of honor killings to
avoid punishment by seeking forgiveness for the crime from another family
member, and thus be legally pardoned.
VICTIMS:
The victims of honor killing are present in all the world but we discuss here the case of
a women who had lived in Lahore.
A 25 years old women Farzana Parveen was beaten to death by her own family
members on the streets of one of Pakistan most refined city after marrying against
their wishes. The “Honor Killing” happened in front of a large crowd of witnesses
outside Lahore s grand High court building. The attack began when one of farzana s
brothers attempted to shoot her before he and other male family members attacked
her with bricks and blunt instruments.
Parveen and her family come from the small town of Nankana Sahib to the west of
Lahore. Her family had been enraged by her decision to marry Muhammad Iqbal
rather than one of her own cousins, whom they had chosen.
Parveen had appeared in the high court in an effort to quash a case brought by her
parents, who alleged Iqbal had kidnapped the young woman.
