Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. WHAT MAKES THIS AN HONORS CLASS?
1. Honors English 11 is an extension of English 11. You
will study the cultural significance in more detail (i.e. art,
music, culture of the time period).
2. You will read some different works.
3. You are expected to do more work outside of class.
This includes reading assignments, homework, and
extension activities.
4. WHAT DO WE STUDY?
Some of the works we will study include: The Great Gatsby, Into
the Wild, The Road, The Narrative of Frederick Douglass, The
Crucible, The Red Badge of Courage, The Scarlet Letter.
We will read short stories and poems from the textbook.
An independent reading project will be assigned during one of
the quarters.
Research and multi-media presentation skills will also be taught.
We will prepare for the SOL by practicing multiple choice testtaking skills, and by learning how to write a persuasive essay.
5. HOMEWORK
Homework assignments vary depending on what we are
studying.
Generally you can expect about 2-3 hours of homework a week
on average.
Homework assignments can include reading, answering
questions regarding the reading, practicing persuasive writing,
and preparing for quizzes or tests.
You are expected to complete homework assignments on time
so that you are prepared for our class discussions and classwork.
6. SOL
Just like English 11 and AP Language, you will take two English
SOL’s during your junior year. You must receive a passing score
on both tests to fulfill your graduation requirements.
The Writing SOL is in March. It is comprised of multiple choice
questions testing your writing abilities and use of the English
language. There is also a free response portion of the test in
which you respond to a given prompt by writing an essay.
The Reading SOL is in May. This is entirely multiple choice.
7. SHOULD I REGISTER FOR HONORS 11?
If you have been successful in your English 10 or
English 10 Honors, and you want to continue to
challenge yourself, you should talk to your
counselor about registering for Honors 11.
If you are unsure, please talk to your current
English teacher about their recommendation for
you.
