• She was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, a rural Mississippi
town.
• Her mother was only 18 years old at the time of giving birth.
• When she was nine years old, she was raped by one of her
cousins . The teenager began the series of sexual abuse that Winfrey
suffered over the next five years at the hands of three other men, all
"friends" of the family.
• In her teens, rebellion was about to land her in a reformatory. She was
not sent to a detention center because she moved in with her father, a
Nashville barber.
• Under her father's care, she went from delinquent to honor roll
• At nineteen, she became the first African-American woman to appear on

• She landed a role in the film The Color Purple , and

• In 2009 it was announced that Oprah Winfrey would be
leaving her show once her contract with ABC ended (in
2011). After leaving the show, Oprah began working on her
own television network, the Oprah Winfrey Network.
• She is actually involved with various charities,
including: Oprah's Angel Network , A Better
Chance and Family for Better Lives
• In November 2013, she was honored with the Presidential
Medal of Freedom , an award that was awarded to her by
