Oprah Winfrey was born into poverty in Mississippi in 1954 and experienced hardship in her early life, including being raped at age nine and giving birth to a son who died in infancy. She landed a job in radio while still in high school and became a news anchor at age 19. Winfrey's emotional interview style helped her failed Chicago talk show become number one in ratings. She then launched her own production company and her show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, became a multi-award-winning, internationally syndicated talk show where she was praised for openly discussing her past struggles with abuse, drug use, and obesity.
