OUR CLASSROOM
AGREEMENT
03
Do you know what is an
agreement?
What would help us work
best together in the
classroom?
What would help us work best together
in the classroom?
How can we create an environment in
which everyone feels like they can take
risks, test ideas, and ask questions?
—Brainstorming activity
We’re going to work in teams to
categorize the to categorize similar
responses into community agreements
for the classroom
—Brainstorming activity
We’re going to put this agreements in
our poster
—Building our class agreement
Let’s see another
important classroom
essentials…
IN OUR CLASSROOM,
WE SAY…
“How can I improve?”
Instead of… “I’m no good at this.”
What’s the difference?”
“Let me try a different way.”
Instead of… “I give up.”
What’s the difference?”
“Mistakes are part of learning.”
Instead of… “I failed”
What’s the difference?”
““Have I done my best work?”
Instead of… “I’m all done.”
What’s the difference?”
“Learning takes time.”
Instead of… “This is too hard.”
What’s the difference?”
“How can we learn from one another?”
Instead of… “He/she is smarter than me.”
What’s the difference?”
“I like a challenge.”
Instead of… “I’ll stick with what I know.”
What’s the difference?”
““My effort and attitude are
everything.”
Instead of… “My abilities determine everything.”
What’s the difference?”

Editor's Notes

  • #35 Ask students to brainstorm the following prompt: What would help us work best together in the classroom? 2. Teacher records responses on chart paper. 3. Teacher and students work together to categorize the responses into community agreements/norms for the classroom. 4. Teacher and/or students rewrite the classroom norms onto a chart to be displayed in the classroom at students’ eye level. For English language learners, be sure to include simple pictures/graphics to illustrate each of the agreements. 5. Teach and model the norms throughout the day
