Editor's Notes

  1. At this time everyone should be in their Home PIT classroom. We’d like to take a few minutes to be sure that everyone understands the purpose and expectations of Home PIT as well as what other offerings there are during this Personalized Instruction Time.
  2. First of all, you need to have a good understanding of what Personalized Instruction Time is…-PIT is sort of like a “homeroom” that lasts 40 minutes…this 40 minutes is inserted into your day before 4th or 8th period, depending if it’s an A or a B-day-This happens every Tuesday and Friday-But Tuesday will have solely an Academic Focus-Whereas Friday is time for students to meet with various clubs and organizations, or if it’s a Pep Rally day, we’ll use that extra 40 minutes at the end of the day so we can all attend the rally-Why do we do this? It’s important that we build a college going culture here at Vandegrift and allow students, YOU, to take ownership of your learning, establish core skills for academic success such as STUDYING and time management, as well as encourage student involvement and school pride. If you’re involved and connected at school, your experience and time at VHS will be so much more fulfilling!
  3. So, first of all, all of you are in what we call your home PIT. This shows up as 10th period advocate on your schedule. What should you be doing during Home PIT? -Your primary focus should be on your academics. -This is time that you can use in a flexible manner to take care of business. -Need to do your math homework? Review vocabulary? Read up on some World History? Or maybe you’d rather read silently or jot down a to-do list. -Whatever you choose to do, use this time wisely and effectively. You should be leaving Home PIT feeling more confident and in control of your studies.
  4. I’m sure this is sounding great, but we do have some general reminders for you in regards to Home PIT. -First, attendance will be taken, so be sure to always report to your Home PIT on time. -Also, you are expected to come prepared with the materials you need. You control how to use this 40 minutes, so it is up to you to determine which materials you need to bring with you…if you’re going to work on math homework, plan in advance what you’ll need to bring with you: a calculator, pencil, paper, textbook, etc. -Oh, and I know some of you like to listen to music while you work, but you must follow your Home PIT teacher’s policy when it comes to iPod’s & mp3 players.
  5. -We do expect that you work quietly and independently during Home PIT…if you need a study group or tutorials, you’ll find out more about those options in a moment, but Home PIT = independent. -Also, because PIT is only 40 minutes every Tuesday and Friday, we expect you to plan in advance and come prepared. Teachers will not be allowing you to leave to grab a book from the library, a highlighter out of your locker, a sip of water, or to see another teacher. When you’re in Home PIT, you stay in Home PIT. -Occasionally you may want to use a computer during Home PIT, but it’s up to your Home PIT teacher if they’ll allow you to use a classroom computer-Also, per school & district policy, no cell phones for any reason…period.
  6. During Personalized Instruction Time, you will also have the option to: -Sign up for tutorials with your teacher to get extra help, make up tests, quizzes, or missed labs-Create a student-led study group to work with your classmates, just like college students do-Attend club & student organization meetings, or start your own club…eventually it’ll be up to you to sign up for these meeting times-We’ll also have other special meetings like visits from college reps that are a valuable way to use PIT, especially for you juniors and seniors-Keep in mind that if you don’t take responsibility to sign up , you’ll stay in Home PIT, it’s that simple-So pay attention to announcements about club opportunities and how to sign up…you won’t want to miss out
  7. And how exactly do we take advantage of starting a club or study group?-It’s pretty simple, and information can be found by scanning the QR codes on the signs posted around the school-Or you can visit this website, bit dot ly slash student pit portal … this site has the applications and instructions for starting both a student-led club or study group-New clubs must be created by the end of the 2nd six weeks-On the other hand, study groups can be created anytime, except for the last six weeks…we know sometimes there’s a high need for time to work on projects, or maybe when AP tests are around the corner, so we’re more flexible on these. However, study groups are limited to 4 people…that way you can easily fit around a table in the library, where you’ll be meeting.
