It explains that the sanctuary was divided into three sections - the outer court, the holy place, and the most holy place. Each section and its furnishings represented different aspects of God's plan of salvation and the Christian walk of faith. The courtyard represented Jesus' death and resurrection. The holy place represented our conversion and walk with God. The most holy place, which was behind the veil, represented being in God's presence.
The document discusses the spiritual significance of the desert in Christianity. It notes that the desert represents a place of trial, temptation, and purification, but also a place where God's people learn to depend on God alone. It references biblical passages where God guides his people through the desert and remains constantly present. The document encourages the reader to allow the Spirit to guide them through their own "desert" experiences during Lent, which will require having faith in God's providence, resisting temptations, and proclaiming God's presence to others from a place of deep personal conviction.
HOW TO KEEP THE MISSION ALIVE: REAPING GOD'S HARVEST06Valentin Aplod
This document provides guidance on how Christians can keep their spiritual mission alive. It discusses symbols of light and darkness in the Bible and how Christians are called to be light bearers in the world. It warns that lack of devotion to God, laziness, excess, or fear could cause one's spiritual lampstand to be removed. The document offers aids for keeping one's light shining brightly, such as daily devotion, prayer, avoiding sin, and sharing one's faith. It also outlines a five-step success plan from the Bible for fulfilling one's mission, involving calling, response, training, assignment, and power from God.
The document discusses the biblical basis for the Christian doctrine of the Trinity - that God exists as three persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) who are distinct yet united as one God. It provides several biblical passages that reference the three persons of the Trinity and their distinct roles. The Genesis creation account refers to God in plural form, alluding to the Trinity. The Father created through the Son and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was baptized by the Holy Spirit, and believers are also baptized by the Spirit. The Spirit, Son, and Father are united in purpose yet distinct in their speaking and actions. Believers are to be led by the Spirit as Jesus and disciples were filled with the Spirit.
The document provides the Sunday bulletin for St. Augustine Chapel at Makerere University for September 10, 2023, including details of the masses, readings, and announcements for the week. It provides the order of service for Sunday mass including the first and second readings and gospel. It also includes various announcements regarding masses, activities, and events happening in the coming week at the chapel and wider university community.
The document provides an in-depth analysis of the Parable of the Mustard Seed told by Jesus. It examines the elements of the parable, including the small mustard seed representing the Word of God, and how it grows into the largest plant in the garden to represent the growth of God's kingdom/church. It explores Jesus' purpose in telling the parable to convey that the kingdom of God starts small but grows greatly, and that great things can come from small beginnings through faith in God.
The document discusses the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. It provides biblical evidence for the Trinity from the Old and New Testaments. Key points made include: God is three distinct persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - in one God. The Trinity is reflected in several Old Testament passages referring to God in the plural. In the New Testament, the Trinity is seen at Jesus' baptism when the Spirit descended as a dove and the Father's voice was heard. Denying the distinct persons of the Trinity or their equality as God are errors. The attributes of deity - such as eternity, omnipotence - are shared by all three persons.
Jesus was filled with the Spirit. That's why He could do what He did in ministry. He is our model. Every Christian should try to imitate Jesus and be filled and baptized with God's Spirit. This message tells you the what, why and how of this topic.
Thunder and Angels: Preaching Between Two Gospelsklewis001
The document provides an overview of Gospel readings and themes for Lent, comparing the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John. It examines the different portrayals of Jesus, including an immediacy in Mark versus reflection in John. Major events like the temptation of Jesus, transfiguration, and crucifixion are discussed. The document also explores the kingdom of God and Jesus' acts of serving others.

1) The document discusses the history and significance of communion and the Lord's Supper in the Bible and early church.
2) It describes how Jesus established the tradition of the Last Supper and its symbolism of bread and wine representing his body and blood.
3) It summarizes Paul's teachings to the Corinthians about properly discerning and partaking in communion as a unified community, rather than exacerbating divisions, to avoid bringing judgment on themselves.
Even though we know prayer is vital, it’s not always the easiest habit to maintain. Jesus’ teaching on prayer is recorded in Scripture, so let’s look at His instructions and grow in this area.
This document encourages believers to pray bold, ambitious prayers that are worthy of God's power and glory. It notes that God calls us to ask Him for "great and mighty things" we don't even know, and cites examples from the Bible of individuals like Jabez who asked God for big blessings. The document suggests praying for inheritance over nations and possession of the earth, and notes that the early church prayed earnestly for Peter's release from prison. The overall message is that Christians should pray God-sized prayers that reflect our faith in a BIG God who can do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think.
God loved the world so much that he sent his one and only Son, Jesus, so that all who believe in him will not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son to condemn the world but to save it, so that through believing in Jesus, one can have eternal life and be put right with God. The Bible warns that those who touch Israel, whom God calls the apple of his eye, will face His judgment and wrath.
John was one of Jesus's inner circle who was with him from the beginning. He took care of Mary after Jesus's death and authored the Gospel of John and the book of Revelation. As an elder in the church at Ephesus, John was exiled to the island of Patmos where he received a revelation from Jesus about what must soon take place.
The document discusses the fear of the Lord and what it means to live in the fear of the Lord. It explains that the fear of the Lord is living in awe, respect, and honor towards God, putting Him first in life. It outlines three things about living in the fear of the Lord: having the right attitude of listening to God and treasuring His commands, taking the right actions of obeying God and walking with integrity, and receiving rewards like joy, wisdom, and avoidance of evil.
This document discusses building a strong family through wisdom, knowledge, and focusing on fear of the Lord, love, and peace. It notes that righteous families will be blessed and children should be taught God's words from youth. It outlines five phases of parenting from infant to caring for adult children and emphasizes disciplining children with love to bring peace and joy. Parents are advised to have clear rules without rebellion, choose battles wisely, and admit mistakes while setting expectations to help children fulfill their purpose.
This document discusses the importance of family according to passages from Proverbs. It notes that wisdom builds a strong house and family, while trouble within the family inherits trouble. It is better to have little with peace than great wealth with turmoil. A meal with loved ones is better than a feast with those you hate. Righteousness blesses one's children. Disciplining children brings peace of mind. Training children in the right way leads them not to depart from it when older.
This document discusses two Bible verses about God's love for the world and his plan for salvation. John 3:16 describes how God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, Jesus, so that all who believe in him will have eternal life rather than perish. John 12:27-28 recounts Jesus expressing troubled feelings about his coming crucifixion but submitting to God's will, and a voice from heaven affirming that God will be glorified through this event.
This document contains excerpts from the Bible discussing faith and the future. Hebrews 13 encourages having faith in God rather than fearing people. Hebrews 12 says to run the race of life with endurance, fixing eyes on Jesus. James 4 warns that people should not presume what tomorrow will bring and instead say "if the Lord wills." Revelation 21 describes God making all things new and wiping away tears in heaven. Philippians 3 says to forget the past and press on toward perfection through Christ.
This document summarizes key points from 2 Peter 1:1-11 about responding to God's promises. It discusses how:
God has given us everything we need through His power to live godly lives and receive great promises. These promises allow us to share in God's divine nature. We are called to make every effort to respond to God's promises through faith and growing in excellence, knowledge, self-control, godliness, love and more. Responding to God's promises leads to hope, growth, and being chosen for God's eternal kingdom.
The document discusses the results of a study on the effects of exercise on memory and thinking abilities in older adults. The study found that regular exercise can help reduce the decline in thinking abilities that often occurs with age. Older adults who exercised regularly performed better on cognitive tests and brain scans showed they had greater activity in important areas for memory and learning compared to less active peers.
The document discusses biblical wisdom from Proverbs regarding handling money. It notes that God owns everything and gives people the ability to earn wealth. It advises planning, being patient in the money process, and following principles like honoring God, being generous, and avoiding deceitful ways of obtaining money. The main points are to plan financially, be patient in the process of earning and achieving money goals, and follow biblical principles for responsible money management.

This document discusses the ideas of strength and honour. Strength refers to personal qualities while honour refers to respect in battle. It provides biblical sources that discuss drawing strength from God, his word, and remaining in him. It notes examples from the Bible where people were not alone even in difficult times and encourages remembering that God loves us. It concludes by discussing showing honour to others.
The document discusses authority in God's kingdom and how Christians should respond to authority. It notes that authority was God's idea and should be exercised as a servant who will give an account. Believers should live under authority prayerfully, obediently, and with a respectful heart. At home, children should honor their parents, and beyond home, how one exercises and responds to authority is part of their Christian testimony and obedience to God.
‘Towers’, ‘tragedy’ and even ‘terrorism’ are often words used to describe relationships between different nations and people groups. Is it really possible for diverse people to live together in unity?
The document discusses how words originate from the heart and can have powerful effects. It notes that words guided by wisdom promote life but uncontrolled words can spread evil like fire. While the tongue is small, it can steer one's life and corrupt the whole body. Words have the power to praise God and curse people, so we must be careful. Ultimately, words spoken in truth and moderation can bring healing and life to communities.

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

9. But you will receive power when
the Holy Spirit comes upon you.
And you will be my witnesses,
telling people about me
everywhere − in Jerusalem,
throughout Judea, in Samaria, and
to the ends of the earth.
Date: 21 June 2015 – first morning service
Preacher: Pastor Francois van Niekerk
Theme: Life with the Holy Spirit – knowing, growing, going
Sermon: Holy Spirit power and influence
Text: Acts 1:8 (NLT)
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be My witnesses, telling people about Me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Emphasis added)
Introduction
The past few weeks we have looked at the person of the Holy Spirit, who He is and what He does.
To know someone personally is far more important than to only know about them. Our theme is all about enhancing our connection with the person of the Holy Spirit.
We have looked at the power and wisdom He brings and how all believers need to be filled with the Spirit and learn to know His voice. His presence brings freedom and healing!
Walking with the Holy Spirit and being filled with His power is a huge honour. Today we will focus on the fact that He empowers us for divine purpose.
Main points
Focus on relationship
Life with the Holy Spirit is about having a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. It is about walking with Him daily, listening to His voice as well as loving and obeying Him. Relationship with the Holy Spirit needs to be central in our lives!
With this core focus underlined, we can now look at the purpose His power has in our lives. If we truly focus on Him and we are filled with His power, our lives will have great purpose.
2. Power for purpose
From today’s text we can derive that the power of the Holy Spirit has clear purpose.
The purpose of His power is influence.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be My witnesses, telling people about Me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Emphasis added)
Acts 1:8 (NLT)
His power fuels the spreading of the good news of Jesus Christ and His Kingdom, causing people to be supernaturally influenced for godly change.
As believers, it is our honour to be ambassadors of Christ. In this capacity we are called to influence people and point them towards Jesus all the time.
Influence is a powerful force – think of salt and light. This force can be used for either good or evil. The Holy Spirit empowers us so that our lives, words and actions can influence people to know Jesus. You are called to be influenced by the Holy Spirit, and then to become an influence for Him.
The Holy Spirit empowers us to influence people to become aware of Jesus, and for godly change.
Sometimes His power is demonstrated in signs and wonders, other times through kindness and compassion. We are God’s vessels, filled with the wonderful treasure of His presence and power. He chooses where, when and how He wants to distribute it (in the same way a gardener uses a garden hose).
This scripture sums it up beautifully:
‘But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.’
2 Corinthians 4:7 (NKJV)
The Holy Spirit must be allowed to do His work of convicting and convincing people. Although we take action and speak the words as He empowers us, He remains the one who does the work of challenging and changing hearts. It is not our job. Let’s work with the Holy Spirit and do our part.
3. Holy Spirit influence in action
Egypt, Cyrene (Libya) and Ethiopia are considered the first nations to have been introduced to the good news of Jesus in Africa. How did this happen in a world with no technology? In short, it happened through the Holy Spirit empowering people to influence others by telling them about Jesus.
Let’s look at the example of one man who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, influenced an Ethiopian to carry the good news of Jesus Christ to his country.
Philip was one of the first deacons (servants) in the early church. He was a man filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom (Acts 6:3).
Due to the pressure of persecution he moved away from Jerusalem and started telling people about Jesus in the city of Samaria. In Acts 8:26 we read how the Holy Spirit worked to mobilise him for influence. This story illustrates the going part of our focus on the Holy Spirit.
‘Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road – the desert road – that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.’
Acts 8:26-39 (NIV)
One man under the power of the Holy Spirit, influencing another man can bring the light of God to a nation!
From this illustration we learn the following about Holy Spirit influence:
Listen when God speaks – it will launch you into adventures on a daily basis (Verse 26).
The Holy Spirit speaks simple instructions. Don’t complicate things, divert to the rational or be over spiritual (Verses 26-29).
Obedience to the Holy Spirit’s instructions triggers divine appointments and events for influence (Verse 27).
Ask real questions at the right time (Verse 30).
The Holy Spirit sets the stage for His purposes. The Eunuch was busy reading a passage written by the Prophet Isaiah when Philip showed up – this could not have been a coincidence! It was the work of the Holy Spirit setting the stage. All Philip had to do was show up and play his part. The Eunuch was the minister of finance, in other words, a man of influence that could spread the message of Jesus to his nation (Verse 28).
Use the stage set by the Holy Spirit to tell others about Jesus. Don’t get into petty topics or doctrines. It is Jesus who saves, not doctrine! The Holy Spirit’s mark of authenticity is that He always puts the spotlight on Jesus. If you want the Spirit working through you, then stick to Jesus (Verses 34-35).
Trust the Holy Spirit to complete the work. If you complete your assignment, He will complete the work of saving people. Do your part, and He will do His. God does not always give us the complete picture because it will be too overwhelming. He did not tell Philip that He wanted to use him to save Ethiopia. He only told him to take a certain road, and then to walk next to a chariot. It is important that we all do our part, however big or small, because in the greater picture every part is important.
When the Holy Spirit is at work influencing people, the focus remains on the Lord not on the vessel He uses, and there is great joy in the lives of those affected (Verse 39).
Here is a summary of these lessons on Holy Spirit influence:
Listen when God speaks.
The Holy Spirit speaks simple instructions.
Obey when the Spirit speaks.
Ask real questions at the right time.
The Holy Spirit sets the stage – play your part.
Focus on Jesus.
The Holy Spirit will do the work.
There is joy where He works.
Who knows where the next person you speak to about Jesus will take the message?
Application
Walk with the Holy Spirit. Let your relationship with Him enjoy top priority. Give Him your full attention and listen when He speaks. He will empower you to tell people about Jesus and also provide opportunities to do so. Be ready and act in His power to influence people.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank you for Your power in my life. I believe I am empowered to be a godly influence. I will play my part as You lead me. Amen.
