The Irony of Spiritual Gifts
Examine Ephesians 4:1-16
KEEP THE UNITY
One Body
One Spirit
One Hope
One Lord
One Faith
One Baptism
One God
Many Gifts
What is the conflict?
Word Centered Spirit Centered
• The miraculous gifts are
the evidence of the Spirit
and must be present in
every believer’s life.
• Danger: limiting life in the Spirit
• The Apostles were the inspired
leaders and their authority is
transferred to the Scripture.
• Danger: limiting life in
the Spirit
• The Authority of God is
transferred to all believers
and is activated by the
baptism of the Holy Spirit.
TRUTH
• The “miraculous” gifts were only
used to validate authority. They
are no longer needed. Only the
practical gifts remain.
So What?
Now that we’ve talked about God,
what difference does it make?
Let’s Take a Va-cation
Justification
Sanctification
Glorification
In other words…what is
salvation?
Where Am I Going?
What is the Role of Faith?
Where Am I Going?
The Church
The Church is…
The One Catholic Holy Apostolic Body of
Christ fulfilling the Mission of Jesus’
Kingdom in the World.
A Deep Ecclesiology
Roman Catholic
Greek Orthodox
Mainline Protestant
Anabaptist/Pietist
Pentecostal
Evangelical
House Church, unchurch, liquid church
A Blessing
May you live today in the full knowledge that the creator of the universe
loves you and calls you His child, realizing that He demonstrated that love
through the self-sacrifice of His Son Jesus. May you walk in the
knowledge that you are a citizen of His Son’s Kingdom. May you walk in
the power that His Spirit brings, enabling you to be and ever become the
person that you were intended to be. May you realize that the purpose of
God’s Kingdom is to be a blessing to everyone in the world, regardless of
race, gender, nationality, or creed as we, through service, radiate God’s
life-transforming and contagious love to the entire world. May you help
people to realize that they, too, can walk in Jesus’ Kingdom and be freed
from the self-destructive patterns that keep them caught in the prison of
themselves. May you walk in the present reality and the future hope of a
world that is once again restored to full fellowship between God and
People, People with People, and People with Nature. Until that day, when
Jesus restores all things, may you love the Lord Your God with all your
Heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.
