3. This workstation concept was
created for the Iken Workstation
Design competition falling under
the category of Innovation.
It is designed for the corporate
business man or woman living
in an inner-city apartment with
very limited space. Its adjustable
surfaces can be moved up or
down the central pole to create
one desk space, or multiple desk
surfaces or shelf space.
The surfaces can also be rotated
360 degrees around the central
pole to allow the user to position
the surfaces suitably within the
required space.
Its innovative because it allows
the user great flexibility to
create a workstation specific to
their needs and space.
It has a built in lamp on top
which gives sufficient light for
the user without the need to
take up surface space with a
desk lamp. It can also be used
as a free standing lamp alone to
give a room ambient light again
saving precious space in a small
apartment.

4. The surfaces can
be adjusted by
unscrewing the
castors and sliding
them up or down
the central pole.
Loosening the
knob on the castors
releases the pressure
applied by the rubber
stopper and allows
the castors to slide.

The desk surfaces are made from plaspanel. The product is manufactered from
recycled plastic waste in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and can itself be recycled.
Plaspanel is waterproof so they do not rot, swell, delaminate, deteriorate or absorb
moisture. The non-stick surface cleans easily and is scratch resistant. Plaspanel is easy
to work with and can be cut, routered, drilled, welded and mechanically fixed with
standard tools.
The panels are screwed into stainless steel plates which are joined to the castors. This
creates support and strength for the desk surfaces.
All other parts are cast from stainless steel to ensure a product that will last and can
be easily cleaned and will maintain its finish. The central pole will be extruded.

7. The Creepy Crawlie Torch
memen
AUSTRALIA
The Creepy Crawlie torched
was designed for the Memento
Australia competition.
The Memento Australia Awards
reward and promote the best
authentic Australian gifts. They
call on designers to create
innovative, quality and authentic
mementos for the tourism and
corporate gift markets that
reflect the unique character and
spirit of Australia.
When conceptualizing for
this project an experience of
Australia that came to mind was
the experience of sharing ones
living space with Australian
creepy crawlies... huntsmans,
carpet pythons, christmas
beetles, and.. redback spiders.
I decided that the experience
would appeal mostly to boys
aged 2-10 years as they seem
to be facinated with bugs,
and so I created the Creepy
Crawlie Torch. It is hand held
and projects wriggling redback
spiders onto any surface.

8. The torch is battery powered by two 9 volt batteries
accessed from the back. The batteries connect to the
switch on top of the handle, the LED bulb and the motor
on the spindle. When the switch is pressed down is closes
the connection between the batteries, spindle and LED
activating the torch.
When the switch connects the light turns on and the
motor rotates the the spindle which turns the film. The film
is transparent polypropelene printed with redback spiders.
As the film rotates it passes in front
of a red LED bulb and behind rippled
plastic. The red light shines through
the spiders back to create the red mark
on the back of the redback spider that
it is so well known for.
9. MANUFACTURE
All parts are made of polypropylene as it can withstand
heat, is child safe, and can be coloured to specification.
The method of manufacture will be injection moulding.
The film will also be made of polypropelene sheet printed
with the redback spiders. The web design on the outside
of the torch can be applied using an over mould decoration
method.
As the film passes the rippled plastic it gives the illusion
that the spider’s legs are wriggling. The 8000 lumen
LED is powerful enough to project the spiders onto any
surface and the spiders and their movement are enlarged
depending on how far away from the surface the torch is
held.

10. My
Sound
My Sound is a device for mobile
musicians and DJ’s.
It combines technologies used in
a variety of MP3 players, small
recording and sampling devices,
and mixing equipment.
The user can store all their music
on the device which they can
then sample from, play through
a mixer or speakers, or simply
listen to on their headphones.
The jog wheel on the front allows
the user to mix music with other
devices through a mixer such as
turntables and CDJ’s.
It is aimed as male’s aged 18 to
40 years old and in particular
DJ’s who want to start producing
and remixing their own tracks
and are creative in their mixing
styles.
Because of its size and capability
it allows users to record, store,
listen, sample and mix from
one easy device without taking
several peices of equipment
around with them.
11. The screen will display the
songs as they play so the
dj can easily see the song
in sections similar to a CDJ
These are the sample
keys. The user can record
sounds and loops that can
be played on their own
to create a song or used
when mixing with other
tracks.
These keys are used
to control the MP3
player. The user can
listen to tracks through
headphones or play tracks
through a stereo.
The jog wheel is used for
mixing tracks. The user will
be able to see the parts
of the song on the screen
and adjust the timing with
the wheel.
My Sound can
be used with
a mixer along
side turntables
and CDJ’s. This
allows the DJ
to take all his
music digitally.
The DJ can also
sample sounds
and music
directly from
the My Sound
without having
to carry around
separate peices
of equipment
and boxes of
cd’s and vinyls.

12. CD CASE DESIGN
The brief for this project was
to improve on a product that
was frustrating or could be
more innovative.
When conceptualizing I
went through all my things
and found products that did The CD’s can be arranged
not work well for me. All of in different coloured
my CD cases were ripping, cases for organisation
unorganised and it was
always frustrating to remove
and return the CD’s to the
pockets.
So I came up with this CD
case design. It is a box that
contains sleeves for the CD’s
that can be pulled out by the
tab. When the tab is pulled
the CD slides out of the box
and as the CD is slipped back
in the sleeve is pushed back
down into place.
The boxes can be connected
together to create an
organised collection of CD’s
or DVD’s that can be placed
on shelves or in a cabinet with
your stereo.
The names of each of the CD’s
or DVD’s can be written on the
tabs so the user doesn’t have
to flick through a case or pull
out each individual CD to see
what it is.
13. As the tab is pulled the sleeve is
pulled with it which pushes the
CD out of the case. When the
CD is slipped back in it pulls the
sleeve back down with it.
(See detail B)
The sleeves are slotted into a
bracket which the outside case
is connected together around.
(See detail A)
The case and bracket will be
made of polypropylene and
DETAIL A manufacured using injection
moulding.
The sleeves are a poly woven
material which are very durable
and are made for easy insertion
and removal

14. K K K K
The brief for our final project was to create a self promotional
K K K K
artifact that we could give to potential employers as a gift to
demonstrate our ability to have a product manufactured.
It had to have appeal, be small for transport, affordable, and
give some sort of representation of personality.
Since the majority of designers in hiring positions tend to be
male, I have designed a product that will appeal to males who
Q Q Q Q
like to socialize and have a game of poker. As do I...
I came up with a deck of cards created especially for designers.
Each King, Queen and Jack is a favourite well known designer
of mine from all areas of design.
As the user plays with the cards they may or may not recognise
some of the designers as their names and fields are not printed
onto the cards. This creates interest and conversation about
who each of the designers are and what their well known
designs are. The aim is to express with potential employers my
favourite designers and preferred fields of interest, and to talk
about each of the designers and why they appeal to me. The Q Q Q Q
cards have my logo and email address on the back in the hope
that the cards will spread and I can be contacted.
Manufacture
There are many companies who can print decks of cards of
any custom design and supply different cases. The case I have
chosen to use will be clear plastic so my name can be seen J J J J
through case.
