Hoi An Ancient Town is located in Vietnam's central Quang Nam Province on the banks of the Thu Bon River. It has over 1,100 well-preserved wooden buildings representing a combination of indigenous Vietnamese and foreign influences from China, Japan, and Europe. The town reflects its history as an important port dating back to the 16th-17th centuries when it was occupied by the Japanese and Chinese and later Europeans. The surviving street plan and architecture present an intact traditional townscape reflecting the diverse communities that have inhabited the town over centuries.
